  • Wifi cameras are a horrible idea. A kid with a $20 wifi jammer off ebay can stop your security system working.

What cameras do you recommend? Ones that rely on mains aren't great either as someone can just flick the switch on the switchboard if the box is outside.

      • I got an approved lock from the electricity distributor for that reason. Definitely recommended as an investment to improve home security

There's always an "end to the string", but PoE switch on a UPS will hold out in the case of a power issue.

My comms cabinet is on a UPS and while the house is plunged into darkness my face is illuminated by Netflix content.

You should use hard wired (POE) cameras, and a UPS for power backup (preferable with over 4 hours of backup).

Edit: Also worth pointing out that these wifi cameras still rely on mains. They are not battery or solar powered.

          ^^ This

You are going to have to run power to most WiFi cams, you may as well kill two birds with one stone.

    • Optimistically it's a kid up to mischief.

But then you get thieves relying on WiFi cameras and Zigbee reed switches (window/door sensor)

  • Associated with Kogan 🤷‍♂️

    • Oh yeah I don't work for Kogan. Rather they outsource a lot of their marketing to an agency and my association is with them.
