Depends on usage. For someone like my wife who is just browsing web, emails, socials etc it should be perfectly fine. Considering she's still using my 2013 MBP 8GB/256GB without complaints

It is, but the main benefit is the longevity. Value wise, if you buy a Macbook and it's still useful for 9+ years, I'd argue that's better value than a laptop that cost half that much but had to be replaced much more often.
I'm not an Apple fan, but IMO if you need a laptop, get a Macbook. If you need a desktop, build a PC. Even the most expensive Dell laptops that I've gotten from work develop weird issues after only a year.

Macbooks are the best value laptops you can buy. I have a 2012 15" that still sells for $500-600 online… they hold their value because they are just better made.
These new M1/M2 machines will eat up anything else you can buy for double the price, and still sell for 50% of RRP in 5 years time.

Personally I am retarded and don't have any real knowledge about technology so won't be over-thinking about the specs.
I suggest test/buy it from Apple store, do the price match and try it out yourself. You will have 14 days to return if you find performance to be inadequate. That saves a lot of headaches.
I guess if RAM is RAM and throwing more ram alone equals better device, those cheapo android phones(compared to iPhone) with 12GB ram would have been run away success and lots of apple engineers would have lost their job.
Only 8GB RAM too. I regularly sit at about 12GB used on a 16GB M1, so for anyone doing real work on this machine, it'll hit the swap often.

Until its not. Like your case.
RAM is RAM. No matter how good the CPU is, 8GB of RAM won't last long for multiple apps and will slow down with time. I think manufacture should realise that sooner and later and put 16GB RAM in as the standard option; just like how we moved on from having 4GB RAM as standard before.
Exactly my point. Some here talk about how fancy smancy way apple handles RAM but at the end of the day RAM is RAM. And 8GB jusy may not cut it for peoples use cases and also nice for a bit of future proofing.
@xoom: If only Apple offers an extra DIMM slot for RAM upgr…oh wait they don't. So yeah basically you'd be stuck with a powerful machine on 8GB of Unified Memory RAM and to go up to 16GB then another $250.
Don't get me wrong, I used lots of Apple products and can't deny they are very intuitive and their ecosystem is great but can't justify their silly RAM game for the Macbook Air/Pro or Mac Mini anymore. Enough is enough!
If you had 32GB onboard, 17GB is going to be used.

RAM is fine as long as you're happy with it for the expected life of the machine. More is always better for future proofing. The other consideration is buying a lower model and saving/investing the money for a future upgrade.
I have a 8GB MBA but am considering a 16GB 14" M1 now due to potentially running more intensive tasks instead of on my desktop.
This model is in a bit of a weird spot - I would be considering an Air if you don't need the active cooling. If you're upgrading ram and SSD, then it's worth thinking about a jump to a 14" MBP.
Future proofing starts becoming vague, with so many services and processing being offloaded to remote hosts. But then, yeah, Mozzarella Fizzlefox will happily use tonnes of RAM on its own, so….
So I have an iPad pro and need a laptop for productivity tasks (MS Office etc.) as my work laptop is super locked down and I'm not enjoying the Office and file management experience on the iPad. I'm thinking MBP M2 512gb 16gb 13" will be more than enough.
With longevity in mind, should I:
1. Wait for the revised versions to come out as I'm in no hurry (noting that I'm not looking for anything high end)
2. Just bite the bullet and buy now with the discounts/sales and before the RRPs go up due to inflation (speculation!)
The MacBook Air would be cool too but having tried both in person today, there wasn't as substantial a difference in portability from my perspective. If the new MBP comes with the magsafe charging cable, that would be pretty swish.
I suspect the middle ground might be to buy from Apple with the 14 day return period so that I can potentially swap out to the new version or benefit from the sale…thanks.
