You're paying TONS more just for the brand name and their marketing.

These are available for $2-3 each bulk buy which is where Step One gets them from with added customised name if you buy 600 pieces. They mark them up massively then they trick us with "discounts" to make us think these "5 for $88" multi-packs are good deals…

    https://www.alibaba.com/product-detail/Custom-best-underwear…

Of course none of us are buying 100 pieces to get them at $3 each so these $8 ones are the same: https://www.kmart.com.au/product/anti-ride-mid-length-bamboo…

    • +14

yet they had the gall to post this BS sob story

    • -2

The KMART ones don't have the lycra thighs.

      • +2

Fair. These with lycra are $11 a pop delivered from the UK in about a week from a reputable high street shop. Very good quality and my daily wear so recommended.

        https://www.next.com.au/en/style/st372703/655680#655680

        • -1

Those don't have a lycra thigh panel either. Apples to Oranges.

        • Alright mate I've just pulled the tigger on this.

      • +2

The 2 i bought from kmart a while back have the lycra insides? Has it changed?

      • You are 100% wrong. The anti ride ones from Kmart do have the Lycra panels

    • -5

Bro, those Kmart are of lesser quality.
And also please dont share Alibaba prices, it's weird. Literally everything imported has extra costs and mark ups.
Do you expect them to import something for $10 and sell it to you for $11?

      • +14

They import for $2.50 sell for $30

      • They're the same quality, but step one do have more colours

    • Maybe @neil can organise some OzBargain underwear for next years birthday event haha

    • +2

Wow…the trunks in the last pic even have the Step One logo on them.

      • I see so many copycats on alibaba witb official logos though.

    • Has anyone found Step One equivalent for sale on Ali Express ?
      I want a lot less that 100 pairs !

      Thanks !

  • +4

Agreed with what others have said, for the price the quality is pretty average.

    • I've had pairs that have lasted 3+ years. I think you need to be careful how you wash them.

Having said that, the Kmart ones are fine just not as many colours

      • +3

The ones from years ago were fine, last 2 batches fall apart within a few months. Elastic gone, noticeably thinner

  • +3

Ive heard stories of Step ones lasting years…based on this I bought 10 pairs.

they are very comfortable and wash well, I can see them lasting a long time.

I've had a look at the kmart ones and the quality isn't the same as far as I could see

    • Thanks for your honest opinion.

      • +2

I've bought from one of these deals before and they went into holes after a few washes and were some of the lowest quality I've bought.

The bamboo felt nice but no nicer than any of the other cheap bamboo underwear around.

  • +7

i could not tell much difference between "bamboo" underwear and my bog standard cotton trunks, if anything, i preferred the cotton.

if you must try the "bamboo" for yourself, get it from step ones suppliers for a fraction of the price. frank & beans, and other brands also buy from that supplier and get their own branding printed on there for a little bit less than step one (last time i checked)

don't fall for the "bamboo" BS: https://consumer.ftc.gov/articles/bamboo-fabrics

Not all bamboo clothing or bedding is what it seems — or what it’s advertised to be. When bamboo has been chemically processed into rayon and similar fabrics, there’s no trace of the original plant left. If your goal was to buy something eco-friendly, those toxic chemicals and the rayon fabric they produced are probably not what you had in mind.

    • +1

so…what is good then? i thought the same, that budget stuff is probably the same, but the budget bunch I bought from home brand are way less comfortable than my bonds or ck pairs

      • +1

stick to what you find comfortable. i'll use the pairs i bought until they fall apart, but i won't buy any more. i don't find them uncomfortable, but they are not worth the ludicrous prices, just get normal underwear. i expected them to be noticeably better, at the very least, given that i was paying about 10 dollars a pair for underwear, but my cotton trunks are more comfortable.

the budget bunch you bought are likely the same as what step one sells, without the branding (you can even see in some of the suppliers pictures the step one logo.. they do it all for them)

i will be sticking to cotton in the future

        • +1

          Is dat you, Halbrand?

          • @Jeffie: nope. haven't watched that crap, don't plan to

  • +7

I'm a XXL wearer and Step Ones changed the way I approach many situations in life. The Lycra thigh panel is a gamechanger, my thighs haven't rubbed in years.

    • +9

      Name three situations.

      • starfish

      • +1

Running. Beach. Cycling. All things I now do which were thigh chafe city previously.

  • +9

Exactly. Nothing "bamboo" is really bamboo. Nobody actually uses the mechanical machine required, they chemical the frick out of it until it's rayon (same as any other plant's cellulose)

The neg is for blatant marketing lies. Literally, it's an outright lie to call these bamboo.

    • what exactly is the "IT" you reference?

      • +1

        It = bamboo

Bamboo + chemicals = rayon. No trace of bamboo left

  • -4

why is there so much thigh rubbing going on

you guys missing the bits inbetween?

    • +7

Too much kfc/hungry jacks making ozb thicc boys.

    • Chub rub.

  • Not a deal for me, last time i bought plenty from catch 40-60% off, and come out with $7/pcs other brand like armani, ck, etc

  • +8

I'm negging this because the quality of the product is terrible. I bought a five pack last year thinking that these are worth the extra money because they will last a long time and will be nice to wear. Well they fell apart within months, which was really disappointing for the money outlay. Won't ever buy StepOne again in my life, absolutely rubbish.

    • +2

Must be something you're doing wrong. I've got pairs that are over 3 years old. How are you washing them

      • Reversing the neg - I also have all my pairs lasting years.

I wouldn't buy them again because the Maxx brand from Target ($22 - 3 pairs), I actually find BETTER fit and comfort, but can't fault the StepONE quality.

Maybe suggesting they're doing something wrong might come across as rude, but also curious what their washing machine is doing to them because all of mine don't have a trace of falling apart. (and yes I do actually wash them lol)

  • +1

Bought a whole bunch of these recently direct from stepone and while they have been great to wear and no chafing after 3 washes they are so thin and one pair now has a hole in them.

Not sure what u derwear to buy now. Bonds trunks ride up like briefs as do ck. These are the only ones ive had stay in place. Any suggestions…..tradie? Why is underwear so hard lol

    • +3

How are you washing them. Something is definitely not right.

      • Cold wash in the washing machine on delicate cycle. Hang on line

        • +1

I use cold wash, but not delicate cycle (just regular) and then hang them on the line and mine have lasted for years (mixture of step one, perfect and kmart). There have been occaisional pairs that have got holes easily or the waistband has pulled away but I'm suprised yours disintergrated.

I use a liquid detergent rather than a powder, but otherwise I'd recommend trying the kmart version

  • Ozb group buy incoming. I would buy 100 just for myself.

    • I'd be down for 10 edit: wait I meant for Alibaba hahaa

  • +1

I bought quite a few pairs not too long ago on a sale as some of my previous ones had holes in them, but the new ones basically all had holes in them within a couple months. Quality has obviously gone downhill lately on them.

  • I get fake ones from the markets here in syd. Believe it not the fake ones last me 7-8years where as the real ones have holes in them in less than 2 years. I buy tommy or ck not these

  • +1

Sounds like the quality of the recent batches has gone downhill. I bought mine a few years ago and have no issues. I tried the kmart ones and they aren't as supportive as Step Ones. On the hunt for another brand to try.

  • Has anyone compared step one to the tradies bamboo underwear?

I bought 2 sets to hit the $50 spend from cheddar deal but haven't even opened it yet. Still have a lot of pleb underwear left.

    • I bought 1 pair of each to compare.
I prefer the Tradie as they seem more normal fit. The Step One are a tighter fit.

  • +1

Definitely not a bargain for this brand name underwear!

  • +1

For anyone interested, I created a forum topic after reading into this deal: https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/730140

  • I got a 3 pack of Step-Ones for a christmas present and absolutely love them, they're my favourite. As said above, the chaffing is non existent thanks to the build, and the quality seems to be fantastic. I wanted to buy more based on this but the above comments have scared me away.

What is everyone else using then? I like the panels on the inside, that's the comfy part, so looking for something similar!

  • Just updating you all that my order from 10th October still hasn't shipped! If you didn't bite on this offer, it seems you made a good decision.
