I picked a i3 12100F with the cheapest motherboard and it was about $30 cheaper than a 5600 ($230) with the cheapest motherboard, so this would be $20 cheaper than an i3 12100F Mobo combo, not worth the lesser performance imo.
The 5600 is ~$220 if using shopback gift cards.
From cpubenchmark it paint a different picture than yours ? 5500 seems 26% faster or you refer to 12400f ? which is 1.6% better…

Excuse me, cpubenchmark is not a reputable source, use reviews to determine performance. 5500 is inferior to a 12400F in virtually all contexts.

@conza: So far Passmark is quite standard, or you refer to userbenchmark ?…. Beside 12400f did beat 5500 by 1.6% as I stated but not 12100.
Saving ~$40 on a CPU could buy you a lot more RBG though?
5500 is a 5600G with the iGPU turned off and crippled with lower clocks
If you are starting a new budget AM4 system, the 5600G makes sense for an HTPC/very basic gaming build and the 5600 is the best option with a dGPU like the soon to be discounted RX6600/6700's
Then when you get the cash to upgrade to the 5800X3D, at least the 5600G or 5600 will have some resale value
If you can, I'd spend the extra to get the 5600 (non x), as it has twice the cache. But if this is what you can afford, still a great buy.

Get a 12100F instead if you're into gaming. It's about $159 at various places right now and will out perform this part.
In terms of gaming performance this is equivalent to an r5 3600, some titles even slower since it has half the cache of a 3600/5600. 15% slower on average than the 5600(non x). Slower than 12100f which is 20 bucks cheaper though that doesn't count the cost of the motherboard as am4 is older.
At this product segment I'd just go for the 5600. CPU's one of those cheaper parts that you can afford to go for something better without breaking the bank.
