Best Way to Pay When Buying Gift for Someone in US from Australia

Hello people,

I want to gift a phone to someone who lives in the US. I understand, I can make the purchase from the US website using an Aussie credit card.

I believe, the credit cards will not have the best exchange rate and there may be a currency conversion fee.

Scrolling though the posts here, I got some idea on Wise or Revolut but people are only talking about using their cards for shopping or withdrawal when we travel to the US (or other countries for that matter).

Is it possible to use Wise for my purpose i.e. use Wise card to buy the phone from a US website, paying in USD, while I am sitting in Australia, and helping myself with the best available exchange rate without any other fees?
Would that be easy enough? Any experiences?

Or, if there is any other better way?

Thanks!

  • I think in Prezze there is a US Store?

that would certainly be helpful someday.
I guess, the eexchange rate being used for payment will again depend of the card used, right?

28 Degrees card has no fees for international transactions. Depends on your credit card, read up what the fees are and whether it's worth the hassle.

BTW, the girl/boy who is telling you that she/he is deeply in love with you but needs you to buy her a phone because their parents/the government/Jesus has taken away their usual phone is lying to you.

    • yeah, credit card fees are one thing and the exchange rate they use is second.
Do you reckon 28Degrees use a good exchange rate?

I know rhe FX markets are not good at the moment but one's birthday doesn't check the market before it falls on us.

Thanks for the warning on Love. Appreciate it, mate.
That someone just happens to be my blood relative and I'll be Ok if the love turns out to be a lie.

Oh no, relatives are even worse. Especially with their irresponsible picking of days which they're born on.

I haven't had a 28 degrees card in years (the call of the churn got to me) but it used to be really close to market rate then no additional fee, much cheaper than paypal and any of my other cards that stung me with 1-2% or bad exchange rates. I can't see to find anywhere online that lists their exchange rates though.

Hopefully someone who still has one can chime in, used to be an OzBargain favourite.
