Do You Use Woolworths' Scan&Go?

I was setting up my Woolworths Scan&Go feature in the app until it needed my credit details. The Optus data breach reminded me that might not be a good idea, so I backed off. Have you signed up for Scan&Go?

  • Nope, but I do use the Everyday Pay feature which also has your credit card details stored.

Most of the time, they don't store the card's details but rather a token that can be used to initiate transactions against the card - the token itself shouldn't reveal any details of the original card.

      • Really. I am totally unaware about how it’s stored. Is there a reference link I can read up more? Thanks

        • Ask the rando who downvoted me :)

          • @psyren89: i thought you were right, not sure why you're getting downvoted ….. oh well my one upvote is yours. if there was ever a time to go whack off at the concept of internet points. now is it….

@psyren89: Found an explanation by Visa here. Perhaps I should get an upvote :)

Credit card info is less sensitive than identity info imho. If someone pops your cc, you’re covered the the credit card company’s insurance and you can just get another card. Not saying it’s not inconvenient. But the potential harm is much less than in the case of the Optus breach.

With Woolworths appalling track record of getting their Everyday Rewards members accounts hacked and money stolen, there is no way I would trust them with cc details

  • Nope and i cancelled my Everyday account when they migrated it years back. They proved they couldnt be trusted after that data breach

Every organisation is as trustful as each other, it's just when they get caught up in an issue that you realise that.

You think Coles is any better? hahahahaha

      • No. Dont have Flybuys either. 🤷‍♀️

      • Flybuy accounts have not been reported hacked as Woolies have been regularly.

  • Didnt know this is a thing but I do use Pay function with the QR code - the app itself is kinda slow to load pages but at least it saves me having to pull out discounted gift cards each time. It just linked to a debit card that pretty much always has nothing in it anyway so risk is lower.

  • These days, payment card details are usually stored more securely than personal data, why? because the payment card industry (banks) demand it as a condition of acceptance.

Yes I tried it 2-3 times and I should say it was easy to scan when everything was good . Third time I had to scan again at the scan and go checkout to prove you are not stealing anything and it was a major inconvenience as there was no space at the scan and go checkout. That was the last time used it . Woolies told me they do this to random people

I do not trust the people who do not trust me lol

    • Didn't know they do random checks. It's probably hard to blame them as the technology is pretty much based on good faith.

I was at Aldi the other day looking for their portable engraver. I saw 5 empty boxes. Apparently shoplifters had walked out with the engravers and left the boxes behind.

      • It came up on the display to re scan the products and it as not a human decision. One team member helped me scan again. What ever it be the scan and go checkout do not have enough space to do something like this and was a major inconvenience.

I saw some one who bought a light bulb at Kmart complaining it was an empty packet when he checked after getting home. People go to any length these days but could be because cost of living has gone up considerably.

      • You should check out what home depot (US version of Bunnings) are doing to stop shoplifters such as locking trolleys, license and facial recognition, disabled tools unless its paid for

  • Can you use other methods of payment eg egift cards with scan and go?
