Back in the day sabnzb took over my newsgroup dutys

    • what about now?

      • +3

Gave up on newsgroups years ago, so many incompetent parts when downloading

        • +9

Wow - for me SABNZBD + Sonarr + Radarr + Tweaknews is completely rock solid. Just works. Rarely ever have broken parts but even then the software takes care of finding another source.

Love the automation and things just appearing on my NAS.

          • @Ramrunner: Do you have synology by any chance? So this is the newsgroup thingie where we can automate getting tv show each week with our nas?

            • @CyberMurning: QNAP but basically yes fully automated. Just Google the procedure - doesn't have to go to a NAS just more conveient for me as I have Plex server running on it.

              • +1

@Ramrunner: Yup me too, has plex on the nas.
Used to be able to automated lonnnnng time ago when tpb still exist with torrents.

I will try. And hope youndont mind if i ask few things if running into issues.

          • @Ramrunner: I used astraweb for most of my Usenet. I did supliment it other free, speed restricted providers

Might need to check out tweaknews

          • @Ramrunner: how about indexers?

            • +3

@fredblogs: Getting by with free ones.

Sonarr: DrunkenSlug, NZBFinder.ws, NZBGeek, OZnzb.com, Tabula Rasa
              Radarr: NZBgeek, OZnzb, Tabula Rasa

For free, they have quite limited API hits you can make, BUT put a few of them in to your indexing settings, and you can generally get by, because if your run out of API hits on one, it can grab them from the other.

When I USED to pay I paid for OZnzb.com. Very, very good (only one you'll need) BUT way convoluted sign up process.

              • @Ramrunner: I'm familiar with the Arr apps but using torrents instead. But could you please elaborate a tiny bit more for a newb to Newsbin.

What is this posts membership for? Is it useful for this at all for this? Do you see much benefit in this over torrenting? (all free providers). Does it work similar to torrents like "SABNZBD is your downloader" and "NZBgeek, OZnzb, Tabula Rasa" are your indexers and that's all you need? Or do you need something else?

                • +3

                  @amrdeus: You're mostly there.

SABnzbd / Newsbin are the downloading client (Personally using SABnzbd since its free and has been pretty rock solid)
NZBGeek / DOGnzb etc are the indexers
.nzb are the extension for the indexed files
                  Sonarr / Radarr for automation
Plex / Jellyfin for media consumption

You'll also need some sort of Usenet Provider which you'll most likely need to pay for but are relatively cheap (I think some Internet providers offer free ones but probably has some sort of limitation). Check out ones like FrugalUsenet, TweakNews, Usenet.Farm. The difference here is unlike Torrenting where you're connected to other peers, you'll be connected to distributed and dedicated servers (which is what you're paying access to use) so you'll be hitting max download speeds most of the time. These servers have a retention period so if you are constantly looking for older things, then a longer retention period might be required.

Also, whenever there are DMCA takedown requests they usually only remove one part of a file (think of it as one small file from a wider split RAR), making your whole download incomplete. Which is why its usually better if your Usenet provider has multiple backbones OR you have a backup block account with a different provider to pick up anything missing (e.g. main provider is FrugalUsenet and have a backup block account with TweakNews - set to a lower priority in your client so it doesn't use up all your data).

                  Hope that helps.

                • @amrdeus: The main benefit over torrents is the absolute automation.

1> Sonarr/Radarr use the indexers (free or paid) to check for new series episodes or movies you have set to be monitored.
2> Once the episode/movie is released and then uploaded and found, it will automatically queue in onto SABnzbd which will then use newsgroup sources (free or paid) to automaticaly scrape all the parts and if any parts are missing see whether it can be repaired or not etc. If everything is available it simply downloads it, pastes it all together and unzips it then signals Sonarr/Radarr that the file is ready. If not it signals a broken file back to Sonarr/Radarr which will then look for another source. Rinse and repeat.
3> Once the file is in the downloaded queue and Radarr/Sonarr has been signalled it's ready, Sonarr or Radarr will rename the file according to a specific format you set (so all episodes of a TV show look the same filename wise, movie names are consistent also). Then it will upload the file to my NAS and delete it from all queues and my SSD.
4> Plex picks up the fact new files have been uploaded and they become available from my main menu screen.

What's also good ususally the first uploads are of lesser quality (Telesync, CAM, 720p, 1080p etc). You can also set within Sonarr/Radarr to keep looking until a certain quality such as 4K webdl or bluray. It will then EVEN if has already downloaded the file and I can watch it as is, keep looking for better quality version and if found will automatically download the new version and overwrite the lesser quality one. Plex then picks up the better quality one.

All I do is say what I want to watch. Then wait. Then it's there. Really easy.

To be fair though we are subscribed to quite a few streamers so it doesn't get used as much these days but handy if somthing is impossible to find.

              • @Ramrunner: OZnzb seemingly has been down for years

          • +1

@Ramrunner: Wow - for me SABNZBD + Sonarr + Radarr + Tweaknews is completely rock solid. Just works.
For me it's the above except i use Newsgroup ninja. I picked it up on a black Friday $30 deal, they put the price up to $40 the second year. To me it's worth every cent.

            I don't have a NAS though

          • +1

@Ramrunner: Noon question, what is the advantage of this over Stremio + Real Debrid + Torrentio?

            • @Zacsik: None, apart from not having to pay the Real Debrid Licence. But with a Real Debrid setup, you don't need a NAS…

            • @Zacsik: None, but know how to do this for the day when black helicopters appear on Stremio / Real Debrid's roof

            • @Zacsik: Don't know any of them. Can't comment.

          • +1

@Ramrunner: I was this. But I discovered RD last year and I cancelled my monthly subscription to news services.

            • @smarter_fool: I never subbed to Real Debrid but went the UseNet route and have a lot of success downloading old 4000+ day old content.

Would RD have this type of retention?

          • @Ramrunner: Still need a good indexer though, like Slug, NZB, Geek, Planet.
Should add in Overseerr and Plex…:)

These days I am more Stremio + Realdebrid + Torenttio
I'm so old, still using IRC for books. lol.

        • you just needed better indexers.

        • I guess the key diff between Newsgroups and Stremio/RD/Torenttio etc is if you have preference for streaming or hosting the media files yourself. The former requires more time and effort to setup and crucially storage which alot of people are not keen to go purchase. Personally I prefer NG and have not had a broken DL in over 5yrs. IMO the best indexers are : omgwtfnzbs & abNZB using Newshosting as my provider. Though choosing a good provider can be hard as you need to consider the backbone a given provider uses to get no broken DL's, some info here :

What version of winamp you using? Lol jk

What's the Catalog like on news groups these days?

    • +43

Nothing wrong with Winamp. Not only was it the VLC of it's day, it was the best Llama ass whipping app out there.

      • +5

You’re right. It really did whip that Llama’s ass right??

        • +3

it even came with the noise llamas make when their ass is whipped, too, as a proof

      • Who/what whipping left ?

    • +1

      2.81d

      • +1

I spent most of my Winamp usage on 2.73

        • I stopped collecting at Winamp Lite version 5.601

    • +10

      Pff Winamp? I use foobar2000

      • +2

Snap! I never liked winamp but foobar2000 was optimal for those days like 2GB system memory and page files on spinning discs.

      • yup I made a jump to foobar2000 after winamp 2.81

      • This new Winamp project is the one to get and beats foobar2000.

I noticed a little while back that Winamp actually got an update back in July. https://www.howtogeek.com/822905/winamp-is-back-with-a-real-…

Wimamp was great along with Mirc and ICQ.

    • +1

Newsgroups? You mean like NNTP using Outlook Express? 😆

    • Winamp is back BTW, no joke, being developed again

    • +2

it's about the same as always, covers most things, definitely new things and popular things but if you look for older or obscure then other sources are better. Retention has increased significantly in modern times though (~2500 to >5000 days)
Probably 90+% of my *arr downloads come via usenet, basically same advantages as always
      - Consistent high speed (~90mb/s for me on gigabit fttp)
      - No uploading, which is good because despite gigabit download, we still get trolled with a 50mbit upload that I prefer to have available for other things
It's also more beneficial if you always go for remuxes and highest quality stuff, because no issues with low seeding

For the around $60AU a year that frugal usenet costs, it's worth it for me. Depends whether the above points matter to you or not, I'd imagine the average non-nerd doesn't care

    • "it really whips the llama's ass"

    • Still using 5.666

      Won't ever change :P

I wonder if I can find my old posts in
    alt.tv.x-files & aus.tv.x-files

Just need to find a provider with ~7000 day retention.

Thanks but no thanks, I get all my news from Facebook and TikTok just fine. /s

    Thanks, OP!

I get all my news from CGHMN in the form of Simpsons memes. If it’s not on there it ain’t worth knowing about.

      • +1

I get all my news from 4chan/b

One of us, one of us

  • I'm installing it and they ask for a Usenet User Service address (the address is usually in the form of "news.servername.com")
What do I put here? Is there anything recommended like ABC news or dows OzBargain have something?

  • +3

What’s the advantage of this over NZBGet

  • +24

    Usenet is outdated?

What's the new thing then? Paying for 15 different streaming services?

    • +5

Back when Netflix first became available locally, I was with Internode. These were the days where we had quotas and IIRC I had something like 200gb a month. At the time, Internode offered quota-free Netflix which actually made it cheaper to watch legally than to download. Obviously it was limited to what I could watch on Netflix but you get the point.

Now that we're repeating history with streaming being as or more expensive than Foxtel/cable, I've canceled everything but Netflix (thanks to the wife sigh) and have Usenet downloading pretty much everything to a 30TB NAS.

:EDIT: Not that anybody cares, I didn't cancel Disney+ either since that's the Game Pass equivalent of a streaming service.

      • +4

I moved to an IPTV+Plex sub, $20usd a month for every channel and all the on demand content you could ever dream of..

        • Yeah way cheaper than maintaining your own nas

        • +2

Which IPTV sub? Any tips or recommendations?

      • +1

Real Debrid downloads onto my Plex/jellyfin server is what I've been doing.

        • You can use riven or zurg to not even bother with the downloading bit and just 'keep' your libraries files on RD.

    • Kodi + Seren + Realdebrid. Stream. No local storage required.

      • Do these sort of setups do 4k and HDR content?

        • +2

Yep. 10 bit. 7.1. Atmos. etc. Checkout /r/Addons4Kodi for more info.

    • stremio + realdebrid is all you need

      • thanks i found out what stremio is because of this comment lol

probably going to skip realdebrid though

        • +1

real debrid makes stremio much better, you're streaming from RD servers rather than relying on the torrent itself. you'll have no buffering issues, majority of anything popular has already uploaded to RD servers so you'll be instantly streaming it as if it's the streaming services you already use. definitely try it without, but if you begin to have streaming problems, RD is the next step and for the $25 aud I pay for 6 months it's well worth

          • @Kozhutki: Not to mention modern Stremio addons mean you can share RD between households now.

  • +2

What is it and what does it do?

    • +5

Think of torrents but direct downloads. It's really easy to explain but actually difficult to grasp.

  • When I think NZB i think discography. However now days it's so much easier just to pay for Spotify and you can get every song under the sun on that site.

  • +2

Wow, their awards are from 2012.

  • Bring back the memories.

  • +10

Looks like the first rule of usenet went out the window.

  • Just sub to real-debrid and DL cached torrents.

  • +2

    rip (n)(z)(b)(s).org

  • +1

It is only free if you signup with Usenet Storm

Click the FREE link to find out from the link that was provided.

Has anyone used this and successfully is using the pro version for any usenet service?

    • This is not what the OP posted.

Followed the OP instructions and got a free 7 day trial :(. I could have got that from going directly to the newsbin homepage.

The OP deal is either wrong, or the deal has expired. Or bait and switch….

      • +1

You are getting an unlimited license for the newsbin client. That is all that i have said and all that you are getting. The search is just a sidedish which i didn't even mention.

        • Bro, nowhere in your OP did you mention it was just the client. nor did you mention Newsbin PRO at all, which from what I can see is the name of the client.

  • +1

Would this be good to use with Radarr and Sonarr?

    • +2

      It's an alternative to sabnzbd/nzbget
