Power Banks mAh, Same/Same or Different?

Hey guys,

I will be needing a powerbank for overseas and while on a 9 hour flight. I don't need a fancy one, prob a 10k mAh or even 20k. And I'm prob never going to use it again for a while as i rarely travel. The airline (scoot) doesn't have a power outlet, this will be my alternative and also good cause I wi be needing it anyways when I visit sites.

I have an s21.

Though, there are some cheap ones on eBay like 20k for $30. But I'm kind of weary about the quality.

When buying a powerbank, if I get a 20k mAh no name brand powerbank vs a branded one which cost like 3 to 4 times more, is the quality significantly different in terms of like how much charge a cheap 20k vs a branded 20k bank gives?

  • Check to see if you're allowed to bring powerbanks on carry on luggage as I think there are some airlines or countries which may ban them.

Have you considered checking the airline to see if they have a power outlet or USB (most airlines do, though Scoot charge for it).

    • Thank you!

It does state on its website "In-Seat power are only available onboard our Boeing 787 aircraft. Economy passengers would need to pay a small fee to access the power outlet." but when I manage my booking, I can't see the fee to add-on, whereas there's everything else such as food, seating etc…. Ill speak to chat and see if I can add it on!

I checked the website, and I am allowed a power bank for on-board baggage but not check-in baggage but from reading can be from 100 to 160Wh

      • I think you may pay onboard to activate it (is it scoot)

Glad I could help, enjoy your trip.

EDIT: I have 2 cheap powerbanks which are a mass produced variant (I got mine from Kmart) and they've been fine.

Absolutely yes. Cheap ones tend to use cheap cells and circuitry that degrade quick over time and some even don't give you the full capacity they advertise. Buy a reliable Anker one to last you many many years.

Double check max size airline allows, there are rules around this albeit rarely enforced.

    • Thank you!

I do more research on which powerbank is best for me and will try avoid really cheap branded ones.

As with all products, manufacturers are easily able to lie about the capacity since you have no way to really verify their claims.

Same as for SD cards - always buy brand-name so you avoid deals that are 'too good to be true'.

  • If there's no power plug, is there a usb port you can use to charge your phone on the plane?

I recently flew scoot and there were no USB ports onboard but I brought my Anker PowerCore Slim 10000mAh powerbank which I found to be enough. I see it's currently $36.21 on amazon which isn't too bad.

Not much difference in that terms. No name brand might explode earlier and more spectacularly at the airport than the branded ones.
