What’s a Good Price to Europe These Days?

I’m looking at flying to Europe in September 2023. Flying into Barcelona from Melbourne.

Singapore Airlines have flights for $1500 return. All the other airlines are 2k+

Pre Covid I never paid more than $1200 for Europe flight.

Do I book now or are there usually decent airfare sales during Black Friday? Decisions decisions!

  • I was looking at Singapore airlines to Europe for July 23. I checked the day it was released in July this year - it was $1600 ish. More flights on the day of departing were released and it went down to $1400 ish . On the first day of thier "sale" it was $1700+. I don't think we can get flights as cheap as pre covid anymore :( I was paying 1k to go to Europe back then. Looking back I wish I paid the $1400

    300 bucks on etihad

  • Anything under 2k seems reasonable to me.

  • I got $1890 with Qatar.
Multi city flight for May to July. Used the 12% off and saved about $400 for the both of us which was a win.

    Scoot via athens?

  • If pre-covid was 1200 then around 2400 would be a break even point for airlines. Get it while you can!

  • Scoot Sydney to Athens can be found for under $500 one way.

    Try kiwi.com

  • Thanks for the replies.

I’m travelling with a child so not willing to use a budget airline this time or book flights that aren’t connected under the one airline.

If I wait there may be a sale but not necessarily for my dates so I think I’m going to book it as I’d be kicking myself if fares went up.

  • We booked flights from Sydney to Barcelona with Singapore Airlines recently for May 2023. Paid around $1800 each incl baby on lap. Have watched the flights slowly increase to $2400. They may come down again but for peace of mind I would just book now as I don't think we will be seeing pre-covid prices again for many years what with high fuel prices etc. Just be mindful when booking with Singapore as they have a habit of slipping Scoot flights into there network so double check flight numbers when booking.

    • 2 questions.

      1. Any of those legs using Scoot?
      2. Why Barca? (Madrid is better imo, then again I am spanish and biased toward Madrid 😂)
      • @iNeed2Pee All flights on my ticket are mainline Singapore flights although when I search for flights across these dates now, a lot of the options have Scoot flight thrown in on the Sydney legs.
SQ only fly in to Barcelona but I am just connecting through Barcelona & on to Alicante to see my family. I agree with you that Madrid is the nicer city out of the two :-)

        • Yeah was weird to see the scoot legs from Melbourne as well.
We ended up going through Qatar Airlines.

Ironically my parents were just in Alicante heading to Barcelona 😂.

          Have lovely trip:)

@iNeed2Pee: Thanks mate. Qatar always offers great service. I have always wanted to stop off in Doha for a couple of days to breakup the trip. Hope you guys have a great trip also.

  • I just wanted to provide an update
On Tuesday we booked a multi city trip from Melbourne to Barcelona, Munich to Melbourne for September 2023. We paid $4,100 for 2 adults and 1 child.
Today the same flights are $5,500.

If you see a price that’s acceptable just book it.

    • can you tell us which airline/s ? thanks…

        Singapore airlines

        • nicely done. great find

        • Remember to sign up to the family pooling option for krisflyer. Think they only do the kids with an adult

    • This is a good price. They will only continue to go up. The Singapore - Barcelona sector is a long trip with the stopover in Milan but the Singaporean hospitality & professional service makes it bearable. You can apply for $20.00 Changi vouchers per person per sector to use at the airport aswell.

      • Yes they now have to be pre booked online though

        • True. But to be fair, it was a pretty straight forward process & they are preloaded on your phone upon arrival so no need to queue.

    • Did you book with the airline directly or through OTA?

      • Booked on the Singapore Airlines website

  • In pre covid days I got a good deal with Garuda going business MEL to Jakarta and first class Jakarta to AMS and flew KLM cheaper airline to Madrid. The fare was abt $2K cheaper than going business with any other carrier at the time. Might be worth checking for comparison. Service was fantastic.

  • I'm finding using the comparison sites a nightmare as you'll see what looks reasonable, but then almost all airlines charge fortune for seat selection. Currently Cathay look cheapest to London, but seats start at $80 per leg (4 legs). So that reasonable fair of $1400 becomes $1720 (this is for a May-Sep flight).

Also so many now have 23 kg checked in. Now wondering if going for one of the more expensive airlines and paying the $2-2.5k gains anything (Qantas, BA)
