How to Block Ads on Android and YouTube

Hi,

So I need a tablet with a good screen to read books, sheet music and watch youtube… Some nice high PPI big screen.

I was considering the Microsoft Surface Pro 8 and Samsung Galaxy Tab S8 and tending towards Samsung for better sound and picture quality…

But then a diamond bullet came through my mind: so I watch youtube on laptop all the time and there are no ads because I use an add blocking Chrome extension.

I made a research about android ad blocking and could not find an easy and effective solution.

Are ads going to be a problem on Android?

Buy both. I have a surface pro 7 and an S7+ and use them for different things yet watch videos on both. I prefer the surface TBH

Don't forget Dell XPS 2-in-1 2022 is now available too. At a first glance I like XPS better.

    • Yes, looks attractive but it's like x3 the price of the two others. I do not need the power, just a good screen.

YouTube Premium can be had for a couple of bucks per month if you fly to India or Argentina… Plus then you have it ad-free everywhere you're signed in

Is the tablet choice really going to be affected by <$30/year?

    • Yes, fair… But I do not like any ongoing subscriptions… Even if it is only a couple bucks a month. Besides, it will not get rid of all of the ads in chrome, just youtube.

      • Get the Surface, download VLC media player, find the YouTube clip you want to watch, copy URL, paste in VLC = ad free viewing.

        • God that sounds like a headache

Side note, OP has mentioned in an earlier post they're running a Shield, YouTube Premium would be great for that

          • @spackbace: I don't really watch youtube on Shield mostly just Kodi. Suprisingly, when I occasionally do, it seems there are less ads on there compared to a mobile phone…

The beauty of Android is there's an alternative for almost everything. If you don't like Chrome and want your adblock plugins, you can download Firefox or Kiwi Browser. (Kiwi Browser is based on Chromium / Webkit, it uses ordinary Chrome extensions. I've found Kiwi browser to be kind of janky though)

NewPipe is an alternative front end for YouTube that lets you download videos and watch ad-free and with more privacy than vanilla YouTube.

You can grab them on F-Droid or on Github

    • NewPipe is great hey

      • It is, but sometimes I miss having the algorithm suggesting videos to me…

Firefox and ublock origin. Also, PiHole.

  • I have no experience with the Samsung Tab, but having a surface pro 7+, I can't imagine you'll find the picture quality lacking for your use cases. I expect that the Tab is easier to use through touch, the surface is primarily a laptop, imo.

Btw, the new surface pro is expected to be released next week, so you might want to wait before you make a choice.

Use the Brave browser. No need for any plugins, there's just no ads.

      Came here to post this.

On my android tablet I use Brave browser, Youtube Vanced and set AdGuard DNS in the settings for the ultimate ad free experience.

"Youtube Vanced" - tried it, it was so broken, I could not use it. On a desktop in Chrome it is just a normal youtube without ads - great difference.

      • Vanced got borked by Google lawyers

Oh really? I haven't had any issues with Vanced and I've been using it for well over a year now on my phone and tablet. Maybe it's broken on newer android versions? If that's the case I pray my v30 will last another 2 years.

  • On andriod use a app called NewPipe, it has to be downloaded outside of the google play store, works flawless,

On win 11 i just use adblock works fine for me

    • Newpipe does not support a chromecast which is a gigantic downside.

      • ahhh fair

  • SmartTube

  • Thank you very much for everyone who participated. Surface Pro it is.
With android it seems that you struggle whatever you do.

Another example I didn't think of before: I have an Nvidia Shield on my TV. Obviously, it is an Android device as well. So when I connect my music to it via USB out to transmit it digitally to my sound system it assigns the resolution and sample rate to the system randomly. I spent hours trying to fix it and yet it is a simple fix on Windows.

By the way - any good alternatives to Shield which run Windows as well?

      Intel NUC.

  • Brave browser and PiHole.

Download Firefox, install, open, setting, add ons, add-ons Manager, find Ublock Origin, enable. No more ads.

  • YouTube Vanced as an app alternative, the official project was told to shut down but you can find it here. I've used it for years and am still running the last version, it's great.

    • Does this work with Chromecast?

      • If it’s a Chromecast where you can install apps, yes, if you don’t have one you may as well buy a Google Chromecast with Google tv or a prime fire stick

        • I don't understand. So in normal youtibe app I can cast youtube videos to TV from my mobile or laptop. Can you do the same with this app?

  • I did this mayb work for u
    Settings>> connection>> more connection>> private DNS & type dns.adguard.com

  • Use youtube revanced
