Need a 1440p+ Ultrawide Monitor That Works at 120hz on The PS5

Now that PS5 enabled support for 1440p, I was wondering which monitor should I get if I want to play at 120Hz? I want to get an ultrawide and I know that will result in either black bars or stretching since it’s not 16:9 but that’s okay. I just want an ultrawide monitor that is 34” / 38” / 49” that is 1440p or above and works at 120hz on PS5.

Basically I’m wanting a monitor to use for office productivity on a Dell Latitude 5300 work comouter, for personal/music production on MacBook M1 Pro, and for casual gaming at 120Hz for PS5. At the moment I use a single Dell 4K 27” S2721QS for the work lappy and personal lappy and my PS5 is connected to my 50” 4K Samsung TV that runs in 60Hz max. So I want to get a monitor that will increase my screen capacity for work and also give me fast motion gaming for PS5 when I don’t want it on my TV.

Any ideas? Thank you in advance :)

  • There's quite a few monitors that will easily satisfy your requirements…. did you have a budget in mind?

    • Are there though? In order to get 1440p 120hz you need HDMI 2.0b, which is rarer than hens teeth as manufacturers will usually take the easiest route and chuck in dp for all their high refresh rate needs.

      • There's plenty check here - https://www.productchart.com/monitors/

Can you give me an example?

That doesn’t even address my previous comment.

      • As far as I understand, HDMI 2.1 will allow 120hz at above 1080p, ie. 1440p or even 4K

Just google HDMI 2.1 ultra wide monitors and you'll get your options.

        • Yep that’s true but only 2 are probably really only worth buying. Hard to find one that is priced right, decent hdr, non va panel.

        • My bad, 120hz at 1440p will work fine with HDMI 2.0

I get that with my series x. My earlier comment re HDMI 2.1 was for 4k.

Most ultra wides will achieve what you're after, but the ps5 titles that allow 120hz is quite limited

  • I have 3 Xiaomi Mi Monitors, very pleased with the price to value

But there's really a lot of options

Personally I can't notice 60hz and 120 when gaming, I've tested it with my Series X and I just cant see it.

In your situation, I just RemotePlay to my MacBook from my PS5

Have you looked at how many games actually support 120hz?

You'd be better off sticking to your 4K 60hz than bothering with 120hz for the playstation. Or go with a non ultrawide. Like a 42" LG C2. 4K 120hz. OLED

  • For your consideration. I got this for work. I believe the underlaying panel is Samsung https://prismplus.com.au/products/prism-xq340-pro

  • I don't do much gaming, but I also use a Dell Latitude for work. I recently got a Dell 34 ultra wide at home, upgrading from a 27" Dell. When plugging my Latitude in via HDMI, it CANNOT run without black bars, as it only has HDMI 1.4. I think the 5300 may be the same, from a quick google search.

I got around it by running USB C out from the laptop to a good quality USB C to HDMI cable. Mind you, it's only 60Hz, but I assume you won't mind for the work side of things.

If I were gaming, I'd much rather play on a 50" 4k tv, especially since you can't fill the screen width-ways anyway. I guess you can make that call once you buy your screen.
