Is Carplay 2 Keeping You from Upgrading?

First of all, I love my car ( 2015 Audi) but i’ve been looking to upgrade probably for the past year (part for tax reasons, part to upgrade my dads car and part to get something with carplay).

I was this close || to getting a demo merc e class this year when i realised they would upgrade the whole mbux system next year (7 year cycles).

then of course apple announced new carplay coming that will take over all the screens and be customisable but likely we won’t see new cars come with it until at least late 2023.

so my question is, is it worth waiting for tech to upgrade your car?

  • The first gen CarPlay 2 Mercs will probably be the top tier ones that are out of most people's budget range.

    • you think?
i actually wouldn’t be surprised if it went the other way and they did it in the c and e class first or maybe a small electric

Tech is always upgrading and doesn't take long before a car is out of date

      true and not.
I got my car in 2015 and the only thing I feel it’s missing is Carplay. There hasn’t been a lot of innovation since then in my view

Seems you think car tech is limited to the touchscreen that control the radio.

        • i am not really into speed or engines etc..
what other tech are you talking about?

      • You don't know what you're missing till you're exposed to it. You'd be surprised even the difference between a 2015 Audi and 2022 Toyota, let alone what MB/BMW are doing with their top-end cars

        • what kind of stuff?
i guess maybe heads up displays?
my car has the lane assist, blind spot monitoring, 360 camera etc…

my wifes 2019 audi has a faster infotainment system but nothing else really

          • @nimnomnimy: Remote engine start & climate control for one

            • @spackbace: true, though im not sure id turn on the car in the garage with the door closed
              do you use it?

              • @nimnomnimy: Only just about to come out to the cars

Have used it before on cars in the carpark in summer (via the key fob), handy to cool the car down etc

  • +2

    Waiting for tech? No.

    • In addition to that, I’d rather cars were a bit more stupid a lot of the time. I want physical switches for the controls and to be able to set things the way I want. I don’t want software updates that change things. I don’t want the option for them to add features upgrades for $.

      • i agree with this.
i especially dont like those new haptic feedback buttons
i think i read somewhere that BMW were trying to charge a subscription for heated seats! thats beyond ridiculous

    I love my car ( 2015 Audi)

    Firstly - condolences.

Secondly - if you love it that much for about $1k you can probably update to some aftermarket unit with carplay. What model Audi do you have?

    • +2

The next generation of CarPlay is more than just the head unit - if implemented by car makers it will be a whole dash interface… see:

@flying ace yes it looks so good

    • @muzeeb why condolences?

i did consider adding carplay to my car but what does that do to insurance?
you have to pay more every year or they can use it as an excuse to deny claims? not that ive had one in the last 15 odd years

also my car doesnt have a touchscreen so zooming in and out of maps is a nightmare. the normal infotainment system is arguably better even with its outdated maps and slow address input

If it’s going into a MB shitbox, then there is a good chance those pricks will go the way of their arsehole Bavarian brethren over at BMW and make it a season pass you have to subscribe to.

Also, not sure if legit question, or just a humble brag about buying euro trashwagens.

    • legit question.

its a great car but you can pick one up now for under $30k which is like a newer toyota so not exactly something to brag about?
i bought it as a demo model towards the end of the year if that makes a difference

i dont think id buy one if it needed a subscription unless the subscription was just for a simcard to do the data?

i've never heard or met someone who is considering buying a new car for the entertainment unit - until today.

    • You want to pop on over to the BYD forums and read all the bullshit reasons idiots are giving over there for not buying or for cancelling orders.

      • +1

i had to look up what BYD is.

I think that's people's excuse to cover up an impulse purchase.

        • Another one just now… It says "First Aid Kit" in the car brochure. Buyer was told at the "Experience center" after their test drive there was no first aid kit… Buyer cancelled. They based the cancellation on "If they forget a simple thing like a first aid kit, what else are they forgetting??"

    • if you are not into speed /sports cars then after the comfortability of the seats and visibility its pretty much the thing you interact with more in the car.
you use it for literally everything to operate the car other than the pedals.

I get what you're saying OP. If you're willing to be spend over 100K for a car you might as well wait for the newest toys.

    • yeah a lot of it is this then theres the fact that cars go through a 7 year cycle.
new car, facelift at year 3/4 then all new updates year 7.
if you buy a car in year 6, the price is going to drop alot when the new MY comes out.

id like not to spend 100k, i will probably do a long term novated lease.
my car was $60k when i got it (demo & negotiated down) but car prices seem to have gone thru the roof since 2019

  • S class or buy a Kia, C class = Cheap Class

    • +2

      E class = Economy class.

      • S class is way out of my price range.
E class, new one will likely come out next year as the S and C have just been updated.
i like the C class, its a good looking car with modern features, whats cheap about it?

i looked at Kia / Mazda etc… i dont really like them for various reasons
infotainment, the feel of the materials used in the car, the sound the door makes when you close it etc…

  • Have to jump in sometime.

    • yeah, going from the car i had in my early 20s (the short lived - dodge avenger) to a luxury car in my 30s was pretty easy, there was a lot to like but spending another 60k + to upgrade to a newer model is a lot harder as you already have alot of the benefits in what your driving.
