Don't be fool by the Japanese character, made in China.

    • Yes made in China on packaging, so can’t vouch if the taste good or not, but still I bought 3 packs to try

      • I am not saying all made in China are not good but Mochi Rice Cake better from Japan.

        • +1

          At $1.87 don't expect the real stuff…
It's not about the country, nothing is hard to manufacture, it's about what budget we are willing to pay for.

          • -5

@NothingButPoor: It is about made in China but they put Japanese character on it to pretend from Japan.

            • @superforever: Hmm… I don't think anything was pretended

            • @superforever: It's a traditional Chinese food Tangyuan 汤圆, also popular in Japan & elsewhere!

So not surprising it's made in China!
But packaged & labelled for export markets.

              • -1

@INFIDEL: They can just put Chinese name on the package, no need to put Japanese there.

汤圆 and Mochi not the same thing.

                • @superforever: Yes, these are unlike any Mochi I've eaten on many trips to Japan. But have eaten as Tangyuan in China.

It's just marketing. Rice Cakes are better known here & in Japan as Mochi. So labelled for export as such.

We do the same with other Chinese foods. Traditionally ordering at a Chinese restaurant was done by numbers or our own name for it ("sweet & sour chicken", almost never the Chinese name), & the food served would never be found in China!

Deception? It's just easier to sell the product by another name we are familiar with, than educate consumers to try a product many have never heard of or have difficulty pronouncing…

Like the "kiwifruit" Originated in China, known by a Chinese name, but repackaged in NZ - a marketing triumph.

Australian bottled Asahi Super Dry beer is marketed as Japan's favourite beer on the cartons… Complete with Japanese characters! (I buy the better Japan brewed.)

It's just marketing. Read the labels for country of origin, etc.

      • Keen to hear your feedback :)

        • Tried the red bean. Not as soft as daifuku but it’s not bad. I would buy more at this price

        • Matcha average

    • "The practice of eating (the Chinese variant of the filled Rice Cake) Tangyuan 汤圆 has been around for over 2,000 years."

So unsurprisingly these are from China! (packaged as Mochi for export)
Variations are common in other Asian countries.

Some Japanese foods (like Ramen) were introduced from China long ago. Fried foods are more recent, introduced by the Portugese. The Japanese loved & developed them into foods associated with Japan.

I dont touch made in China foods or fruits.
You never know it has Toxic or chemical in or not.

    • -2

Soy Bean, apricots, pears, peaches and most citrus were from China do you eat them despite Chinese heritage?

What about food and stuff owned by China? Your drinking water is probably owned by Chinese State Government.

Own by China ( no ).
drinking water in Aust never own by China.
    I don't boycott China.Just don't trust their products.
Even people in mainland China avoid their own products. Why ? people should knew it for long time.
Other second country is Vietnam ( no ).

    • What's wrong with Made in China's products? You probably still use a lot of items made in China without even knowing.

      • +1

Its the food that's the issue.

Why do you think the Chinese Daigou come here and raid through the local supermarkets and pharmacies for baby formula? The Chinese don't trust their own food supply chain to the extent that they don't even want to buy from their local retailer of Australian brands. They want it directly from Australian shelves instead.

    • Mate 90% of the stuff in your home is probably made in China lol, seems more like ignorance than Xenophobia tho

      • I only mention about fruits and foods.(including soy sauce & drink ).never have them in my kitchen.

      • +1

Just do a quick google on chinese food contamination, fake food etc. It's all true. Labelling isn't entirely accurate either and there is no way that all food coming in is tested. That's why there is such a big market to send Australian food products to China. Nothing to do with xenophobia. Watch this documentary on the food problem in China.

I tried it and didn't like it. Won't ever buy it again

    • Japanese love Mochi🎏
These rice cakes are common in China & other Asian countries.

But it's not to everyones taste. I don't like it that much. So wouldn't buy it.

As a regular traveller in rural Japan over so many trips, its offered to me free at Festivals. I accept gratefully & say will save it for later. But give it away to homeless or people who appreciate Mochi far more. They're always pleased.
