Which microwave is good and cheap (less than $150)?

Hi,

I have had no luck with micro wave.

I had a homebrand microwave which lasted for approx 1.5 year and died
then came the sanyo microwave which lasted approx the same time as the previous one.

Now time to buy a new one. which brand is good? any good deals in the market ?

I read in one of the similar posts people commenting about microwaves lasting for 2 decades and just feel that may be the older models had superior quality compared to the new ones in the market.

please provide your feedback based on your personal experience.

  • My parents have a microwave they purchased second hand in 1989, still using it.

I bought an $80 microwave (not home, can't remember brand) 6 years ago, never had a problem.

Do you know what failed on the microwaves?

    • frankly i didnot bother trying to get it fixed. but i guess the magnetron was damaged.

  • Why would you want a microwave to last 2 decades anyway? A few years is probably good and by then something will fail that will cost more to replace than buying a new one. Bad e-waste-wise but that's the way it is. Most like a moving part rather than the electronics.

Confession: I actually have one that is 20 years old, a Sharp. Unfortunately the turntable motor failed early on so I've been using it like that since.

But you want some idea, maybe look for a recent Choice survey for reliable manufacturers, or do a web search for reviews.

    • you are right. i am not expecting it to last two decades. frankly i would be more than happy if it lasts for 5 years with out any problem. i guess 2 years is way too short to replace an appliance ;)

    I bought this yesterday:

Was $151 after the 10% of EDR card holders.

good reviews on brand and model, and has inverter so reheats better

  • it probably lasts 2 decades because they only use it once a couple of times a year

i bought a NEC microwave off ebay for $1 a year ago. still going strong.

replaced the whirlpool microwave that died 4 months out of warranty.

Why would you want a microwave? They destroy all nutrients in the food not to mention most of them leak microwaves into the room, its like having 20 mobile phones strapped to your head. Just use a hot plate or regular oven!! Got rid of mine in 1999, never looked back.

  • If you can get a Panasonic Inverter of a suitable size that fits your budget I'd highly recommend it

  • Yup Panasonic Inverter are the best ones. Try to get one on eBay perhaps. I bought a sharp one on eBay last year for $10. Works perfectly. Most important thing to check is how many Watts it is. Try to get 1000 or higher. Anything less and they are just too slow.
