Bulk Nutrients Is Getting Too Expensive - Where Do You Go for Protein Now?

Just went to make a regular 4-month order for Bulk Nutrients and WOW! Prices have gone up even further. They were already jacked through Covid by a good 25% but I've noticed they're now even higher and seem up a further 10%. $36 for a bag of Protein+ which used to cost $27, Collagen up to $47 from low $30's. Everything across the board is more expensive. Not to mention shipping is now $9 up from $7.

I was already on the edge of being priced out in April, but I feel this is honestly too much and way above the cost of inflation.

Where are people getting their protein and nutrients now? Are you finding the quality as good? Preferably regularly as I don't always have the attention to wait for a sale.

Thanks for your help!

Thanks, I'm not so much looking for protein substitutes but more a cheaper vendor for Protein Powder. It seems the best deal at the moment is Musashi when it's 50% off at Chemist Warehouse.

      Ummm… that's carb not protein.

Real shame how much bulk nutrients has climbed in price, used to be my go to as well.
I haven't found a regular supplier able to give anything comparable to the random sales that pop up though, so I can't suggest anything there.

I grabbed the Musashi whey from chemist warehouse last time it was up. I think that was around $26/kg. Haven't opened it yet though so can't comment on quality.
Myprotein can have a decent sale sometimes, with specific (usually less popular flavours) being discounted more (under $20/kg from memory)

I just have an ozbargain alert for protein and buy when it suits. It might be the way to go at the moment, just stock up when you can and wait for the next sale.

One cheap as hell way to get protein, though not as easy as a shake, is seitan. It's basically cooked gluten. The flour to make it called Gluten flour/Vital Wheat Flour costs around $10-11 a kilo for and is 70-80% protein. Can taste pretty good too if you cook it right.

    • Where do you find Vital Wheat Gluten? I think it's what a lot of meat substitutes use for vegos

      • I've found it at a couple of the health food/bulk food places. Online as well. I've heard of some Asian food places carrying seitan, but haven't seen it for myself yet.
Yeah it's often a meat substitute, probably one of the the best around.

    • How did you setup the ozbargain alert?

      • +1

When you search by keyword, there should be a button under the search bar saying create alert.

        • Champion! Thanks mate.

Meat direct from farmers ~ $12/kg butchered

As protein powder doesn't actually do anything for you, unless amino acids are consumed in the correct ratio (which no powder ever is):

That video says nothing about it not doing anything for you. In fact it was comparing plant protein powders to animal protein. Whey protein is an animal product, and as you can see in this study: https://doi.org/10.1017/S0007114517000125 it has a higher amino acid profile.

That's not to mention the fact people use protein powders as a supplement, and should have a balanced diet while using protein powder to increase their total protein intake. Not use it as a sole source of protein.

        Woosh!
There is a particular section of the video that explains uptake .. if you take a single amino acid, it's not absorbed …
They must be taken in correct ratios to get any absorption at all ;)

Bottom line - protein powders rarely have the correct amino acid ratios for adequate absorption :P

        • Woosh! There is a particular section of the video that explains uptake .. if you take a single amino acid, it's not absorbed …

Except that is just totally wrong eg

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3650697/ measured absorption through muscle biopsy following drinking Musashi WPI mixed with water. And, well, it shows that there is absorption. Not sure how biopsy evidence can be disputed

Now it is correct that taking a big dose of protein powder is a bit of a waste, because your body passes the liquid through faster than it can absorb all of the protein in the liquid. So taking more than about 20-25g at time probably is not worth it, unless you take some enzymes or put oatmeal or something else in the shake to slow down the rate. https://jissn.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/1550-2783-5… However you will see, if you read the link, that there is clearly still absorption of the protein. Again using a commercial protein powder

The video linked doesnt even include who made it. Some random video on youtube made by someone who doesnt say who he is - thats your evidence?

Bottom line - well, not sure. I guess dont believe random youtube videos without checking against actual scientific studies?

          • @dtc: Indeed, as whey has complete amino acid profiles as does meat ;)

Find the study on pea protein and muscle biopsy, it's a completely different story as the amino acid profile is completely different …

        • Bottom line - protein powders rarely have the correct amino acid ratios for adequate absorption :P

Protein powders, or plant-based protein powders?
As you say in your other reply

Indeed, as whey has complete amino acid profiles as does meat ;)

I don't think anything whooshed me haha. I just thought your reply was out of context, as OP didnt specify they wanted plant-based.
Do you have stats on which whey powders are lacking in amino acid ratios?

If you swap brands, see if you can get a sample first as you might not like it. I used to buy from AminoZ. Happy with the flavour and quality and they have regular discounts. I noticed the price rise and bought from MyProtein instead which was cheaper for WPI but not really happy with the mixed result - seems to have a thickening agent as when I add to cereal it forms a gluey paste. So just been adding a half serve for cereal. Think I'll go back to AminoZ. Have used Musashi when on special from CW but not as pure for WPI so for me not that value for money. I use it when I'm in between brands.

I have been using Pure Product for a while, though I checked and they've seemingly jacked prices too. I think it works out to be slightly cheaper/g of protein than bulk nutrients but its minimal.

  • +2

I swapped to myprotein. Though, I only buy with at least 40% off and 6-12% cash back through CR.

  • I used to buy 10kg every 6 months or so, but stopped buying from them too now and instead stocked up on Musashi when Chemist Warehouse had it on sale.

Don't mind the taste, the container is pretty neat with a little hook to hold the scoop, and it's so much cheaper than Bulk Nutrients.

Jump on the Chemist Warehouse Musashi deals or the last Costco MP on or even lookout for Iherb/bodybuilding.com etc deals.

    When i say Jump on i mean 30kg + at a time.

The only other one would be Venom Protein from QLD, the taste is a bit how you going, but its cheap.
