Cheap Double DIN car head unit with GPS recommendations?

Hi all,

Im after a double din car audio head unit with all the features! I see ebay has hundreds of them from China that start around $300, but I was hoping for a cheap brand I can purchase in-store here somewhere. Main features Im after are:

  • Bluetooth for making/receiving calls (streaming from a phone is a bonus)
  • GPS built in
  • FM radio
  • USB and/or SD card playback
  • Anything else is a bonus really

I know most of the branded ones (Pioneer, sony etc) are $1000 plus, I'm hoping to spend about half of that and don't care the brand.

Any recommendations?

  • Hi,

I've been checking this site for a while, it's cost me so much money!!

Anyway I registered so I could respond to your question. I bought an X-Trail a few months back and I found a thread on the Aus X-Trail forums about the all-in-one 'kitchen sink' style units that people had been installing in their double-din slots of their beloved x-trail. Anyway I did a bit more research about the recommended sources/brands and found a few other threads on the Prado forums that gave high praise for an ebay seller who is actually located in Melbourne and has excellent after sales service. Here's their store:

    http://stores.ebay.com.au/DIG-Options

The Dig Options unit ended up ordering was about $510 shipped which arrived the day after I placed the order! 3.5 hours later I had the standard X-Trail unit out of the car and the new one installed. This included running all of the wiring for the supplied reverse-camera, placing the hands-free mic and the gps sensor.

I've been extremely impressed with the quality of the unit and the amount of features for the price. It even has a ton of manufacture specific launch screens so it flashes up a Nissan logo when I start the car, it looks more factory than the original unit. It ticks all of the feature requirements that you listed and more, including micro sd, flash drive, ipod control (not perfect), GPS (with updateable maps) and streaming from your phone, I was actually streaming spotify through it today.

Long story short, I've had a great experience with the above seller and their product. They will even supply the mounting brackets and plug'n'play wiring loom for your make/model if you supply that info with your order.

    good luck!

    Steve

    • Very good timing :) Just bought an xtrail and was thinking about installing one of these.

  • It also depends on what car you want to install it in. I bought a bracket for honda jazz which cost me alone $175. But i wouldnt buy an unknown brand. They arent good and dont last as long. And your budget is only $300. Why not buy single din with bt support and use your mobile phone as gps instead. And if you buy those deck from china, i wouldnt rely on those gps.

My advice is buy single din with bt and use gps on phone.

  • My local Autobarn had a Clarion double din for $399. No GPS or reversing camera though. You'll have to up your budget if you want those features.

  • On second thought, I would have to make a fair bit of modification to fit a double din unit in my car, how about a single din unit with the screen that comes out of the unit with the features above, anyone know of any budget units to do this?

  • I bought a chinese Double din for my Aurion nearly 3 years ago . GPS, Reverse camera etc etc .. Not a single thing has gone wrong with it . I bought a camry unit as thats what an Aurion basically is and it fit perfectly and was a piece of cake to install as all the connectors were there and there was no cutting of wires or soldering . I was surprised even the steering wheel controls even worked as they should . I think I paid about $400 delivered but they are now closer to ~$200 . The unit has a seperate sd card slot for upgrading the GPS maps/software (IGO) and an SD slot for music or movies . Another pleasant surprise is its ability to play most divx movie files , there have only ever been a couple it hasn't been able to play . At the time the cheapest alternative in Australia was well over $1000 . Very happy with my purchase .
Try these guys for one that is specific for your car http://www.spemall.com I got mine from http://www.autodvdgps.com/ but spemall seems slightly cheaper .
