New Licence Number Not Instant in Queensland

I was advised by Optus my details were hacked, in my case it was my licence, so off I go to Qld transport to get a new licence No. I waited 45 mins, the lady at the desk was very helpful, showed her my current licence (and passport just in case), she entered my info into the computer then she said: “ you will be contacted in next 14 days to have this approved then come back and have your picture taken!”. I said “but you have proof and I’m the same guy on my current licence and passport, so why can't you do a new licence now?!, she says “sorry but it's how we do approvals”, WHAT, it's bloody ridiculous and time wasting for both of us.

It's probably not about verifying you are the person on your license/passport, but more about validating whether your license was part of the Optus data leak.

They're just doing their job, and 14 days isn't that long. Geez.

    • This.

As Optus is footing the bill for the licence changes, they will reject the bill for any people who aren't a part of the leak. Thus, they need to check each person with Optus to confirm they're eligible.

I gave her a copy of the Optus letter.

If someone wanted to, forging that email is very trivial ;)
Not sure who would want to waste their time to go to the service centre etc. So I wouldn't blame them if they have additional verification to validate if you were actually affected.
Although this would have been easier if they still had the previous API open.

I hope you went off at the lady behind the desk.

I hope you didnt actually go off at the attendant, OP - but that being siad, although qld transport's site is a bit crap to use - how hard would it be to add in a secure submission and storage feature to flag the account in the system, get it cross-verified with optus, then have the ability to book in online to do the rest in person?

In government contractor time? Months! Years even!

Slightly off topic but what do people thinking about trusting Optus in the detail of what has been hacked not hacked (when I say hacked, just left completely open without a password, so kinda not really hacked).

Optus told me some details had been hacked but not ID/ID numbers. Do I just believe this? Would I even be eligible for license and passport swaps?

  • Go to another DOT office and se what they say.

I was very calm and nice to the attendant, I also gave her a copy of the Optus letter, the point I'm making is, why could not get a new license while there as I had produced the correct documents?. The people that work at DOT are always busy so why take up more of their time and mine having to go back for a second time?

    • Perhaps there's more to the process than just pressing the gigantic PRINT LICENSE button that takes up 95% of their deskspace.

You know, registering your details with other departments, confirming same, making sure there's enough laminate in the printer ("Hey Steve, about a quarter of the population wants replacement licenses, have we got a spare cartridge out the back?"), making you wait an arbitrary amount of time as a method of controlling your life, spellcheck, etc etc.

This is a really stupid and frustrating process. People have jobs to go to. If they needed to verify your info, couldn't they have collected all your info beforehand to save you a trip back? ie. take your photo first, etc. Not good enough, Optus!

but its not Optus thats stalling the process.

  • Do we have to get a new picture with the new license? I’d much prefer my 6 year old photo to stay on mine.

oh what? 6 year olds aren't allowed to drive!
