    Probably been opened by Muzeeb.

    • +3

Was probably testing the 38" monitors he nicked lmao

    • +5

can someone update me on the muzeeb joke? Seeing it a lot on dell things

Would the CPU be a pretty big bottleneck with AAA titles in 4K? 10th-Gen is definitely dated now.

    • +2

Most AAA titles are more heavy on the GPU side

    • IMO with a 3080…no! but I am sure the spec crew will neg me for saying that. 'Oh but you will lose frames!'.

      • +1

You might hit a CPU bottleneck at 1080p
1440p and 4K should be fine
Depends on games too of course

    • i run a 7700k and get around 40fps on flight sim with a 3080

    • +3

The bottleneck will be the pathetic cooling solution

  • 10th Gen i7 — not worth it IMO! Also only 16gb?

  • What is a "Open Box Sale"?

    • +3

their demo machines. technically insufficient quantity IMO…but donno how many they have.

BTW go search for gamers nexus review of these machines… quotes 'hilariously bad'…for R10…and stays the same for R12 R13…

    • What precisely are BPC doing selling Dell computers? Being open box and sporting a 3080, their sale right after the ETH merge might raise the question if they are ex mining.

      • i….don't think any miner in their right mind would buy Alienware en-mass…they are pretty expensive brand new

        • Valid point. However profitability was high and factoring the inflated resale value of cards meant it could be viable. Mentioned above that they might have been ex demo. How many exactly were on display, I'm mean really?

          • @chyawala: yeah…it's already 'low stock level'…I guess even with 1 unit… LOL

But it makes sense to have a couple of intel and a couple of amd equivalents at different stores. Personally I don't know how many stores they have.

3 month warranty speaks for it. Must be someother condition, otherwise all Dell new gear have to have minimum 1year

  • +2

A year ago this would have been a killer deal. With crypto crash and next gen just around the corner, it’s not so appealing

    • +3

If someone just wants a prebuilt, brand name but don't really care too much for bang for buck and value…for sake of convenience, I can see this would be an OK machine at the price. These were $3.5K (maybe even $4K)+ when new? RTX3080 back in Gen 10 would have been expensive…

$2743 on 30/04/2021, given the rtx 3080 was $2200+ and now $1000, this is not a good deal.

      • +2

It's still a bad deal, far too many proprietary parts and overheating issues. Also overpriced considering 10th gen is dirt cheap already.

  • +11

Too much proprietary BS, mainly motherboard, case and PSU

  • +8

Too many issues with Alienware, and it does not make sense to, but this given that there's no GPU shortage.

    • +1

I came here to point potential buyers to Gamers Nexus.

    I have an R12.

People are easy to say it is overheating and stuff but objectively speaking, I have never seen my CPU/GPU went over temperature or even throttled and as such by definition, it cannot be overheating. I am guessing people just want to jump the bashing bandwagon (like Exynos is shit repeat 200x until it becomes the new "truth").

Despite this, I wouldn't recommend this R11 and it's not because it is proprietary. People buy this all in one solution for convenience and warranty support and I have been getting decent support from Dell about my issues (detailed below).

Maybe it is just me but I have been getting black screens and shutdowns, at times took about hours before it can be turned on again. Currently, the workaround is to repeatedly reseating the Graphics Card and the computer will turn on again but from here, I can deduce the seating of the Graphics Card will eventually go loose and the problem will reoccur.

    This is a design fault.

Since R11 shares the same case characteristic as R12, I wouldn't recommend this at all.

    • +2

you definitely shouldn't be reseating the GPU, that's going to destroy the pcie connector over anything

      • +1

agreed… reseating a GPU is not part of normal process of turning on a computer. you should be getting the GPU/power/mobo warrantied while you still have the warranty.

I suggest power as that is the only thing you do when you 'reseat' anything that is connected. It completely disconnects the contacts. So could be power saving state with the graphics card, like it refuse to wake, because PSU is still supplying it with power even when you think it's off. This is all controlled by the mobo. so that's the problem chain…graphics card, mobo, PSU.

I am no technician, but that's would be my angle of attack…. actually just ask Dell to warranty it! you paid the premium for service, might as well use it.

        • I apologize I didn't clarify further regarding my R12.

Dell is giving me R13 as an exchange warranty and I should be getting my R13 I think next week. This R13 they said is an upgrade and looks like it is because it has a bigger case with better cooling system (Cryo-tech), 12th Gen CPU, Z690 mobo, etc but my PSU would go down from 1000w to 750w AND my RTX3080 would now be LHR.

The upcoming R15 appears to be a big improvement on cooling (240mm vs 120mm fan) with 4xxx series and 1250w Platinum PSU but that's for another day's story.

I am only doing reseating my R12 if I cannot turn on the computer anymore (like it is on, but nothing actually appear nor can you do any keyboard input like WIN X -> U -> U to shutdown). I would avoid playing youtube for too long and definitely cannot play ANY games as it will trigger the TDR shit which I now realized is due to, as you said, defective GFX, MOBO and PSU.

I just need to survive this for another week or two because my R12 is also for work too and I can't rely on my laptop for too long because my work involves a lot of spreadsheet and screen real estate is everything.

          Thanks for listening though… :-)

EDIT: For any other R12 owners for reference, before getting R13 exchange warranty, I have had Dell visited me 4x and replaced mobo, 2x RAM, and GFX 2x with 3080s. All didn't fix the black screen but yes, PSU wasn't replaced and I am now more than ever convinced, the PSU is defective because my Kasa said it only drew an average 150w to 250w when playing high spec games (and TDR'ed the machine big time) and that's way too low_

          • @burningrage: yeah… that sounds like graphics card doesn't wake from sleep state.

            great outcome, good luck.

those that buy this deal won't get the same treatment tho - as these are likely out of warranty and the warranty sounds like it's born by BPC.

            • @hippo2s: That's right. I wouldn't buy Dell from other place other than Dell themselves or Dell Ebay.

Which reminds me. AMEX currently has 10% off Dell so if Dell has a discount on a prebuild, this 10% stacks on it (PLUS if you have the K-12 code, another 20% off OR 7% if the product is already on sale)

PS: Btw, the problem happened again yesterday and my PC wouldn't turn on so I had to reseat the GFX card again and voila, it came back on…. until next time. Avoiding youtube atm. Just pure spreadsheeting.

Gamers nexus did a really good piece on these pre builds. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UnvxSkqJ8ic
It's design has a lot of compromises to not just thermals but also to their components. Alienware systems are not like others in that you can easily work on or replace hardware when things go wrong.
In saying all that, if its a great deal… its fine. most people don't upgrade or work on their own systems
but this is not a good deal, let alone a great one. There are 3090's going used for $1000 at the moment and 10th gen chips are getting old and are cheap as chips :D

  • looking for 3080 prebuild, could anyone recommend a better deal than this?thx
