Rental Car: Any Pitfalls of Using Corporate Discount from Prior Employer

My prior employer has an excellent corporate discount with one of the well known car rental companies. The rate also reduces the insurance excess. My current employer has a minuscule discount.

Is there an issue (other than moral) if I use this code online to lock in the lower rate before I travel? This is for domestic travel in Australia.

The concern I have is the insurance, so if something went wrong would this mean that insurance would be invalid, or any claim would need to notify the supposed employer?

Fraud, as you no longer work for the employer whose code you are using.
    And this is personal travel?
You may end up losing your job with the current employer.

    • Yes, personal travel.

      Thanks for your input.

  • If you get caught you could lie and say you thought you were using your new employer code? Or your browser autofilled it from last time. You say you don't have moral concerns so I assume you're comfortable with lying.

I highly doubt the insurance is tied any coupon or discount. It is probably the same policy either way regardless of payment method. If you check the policy, it will have an eligibility criteria.

Risk vs reward. I was surprised to find my employer has a 50% discount for car rentals. Massive savings. Big reward, and what could go wrong?
I dont believe the company pays anything extra, its just a bonus for the company as being a frequent user. Otherwise they'd definitly keep track to avoid abuse.

I have seen rental places confirm company id for the really juicy CDP codes.

If it is a generic code that anyone with the code can use, then I don't see any issues with it.

Can the code be used by friends/family?

You don't know what happens at the backend. For instance, there may be a procedure where policies purchased with the code get notified back to your old employer (if they like to track the amount of relationship referrals).

I can think of one possible issue and that's if you're involved in an accident. That "excellent corporate discount" may be facilitated through accident liability costs being shared with your former employer.

  • Thanks all for the comments, on balance I won’t be using the code.

Personally I don’t see using a former companies code for car hire as any different to the people here who use other peoples company discounts at HN etc.

  • When I've used a company discount code before online, when picking up the car they asked to see company ID. Was three or so years back.
