Has Anyone Used Smoney.com.au for Foreign Exchange?

A hoy!

Well the Japan borders are open and we're booked to go, looking to exchange AUD to JPY and just discovered that ANZ no longer does cash exchanges, Travelex is still not the greatest and there are still a bunch of shady exchanges out there but came along smoney.com.au which gives a slightly better deal over Travelex. Can't find any independent reviews other than what's on Trustpilot which is heavily advertised on their own website.

Just wanted to know if anyone has used smoney.com.au for cash exchange before we give in and go back to Travelex?

Thanks!

  • Their rates are a joke!
Check their own USD comparison and they have the worst rate on offer

Well for AUD/JPY they're the best rate i've found so far on a larger amount ($2k+)… We're not exchanging $10 here..

      • I just did a comparison smoney/Travelex. For AUD2,000 smoney was 89.66 and Travelex 89.73

  • Hey mate,

I think it is time for you to consider this card: https://wise.com/au/card/ if you can go cashless and use this card to transact there.
However, it depends on where you go and shop the most. Try to avoid bringing so much cash unless it is required for small shops.

At the time of writing with the 2K conversion, you are getting around JPY185,XXX. That's way better compared to Smoney.com.au.

    • Japan is very cash based. Most places use Suica/Passmo IC cards which is handy and what we prefer to use but for the most part it's cash. Especially in the outer areas.

I've used citi's global currency wallet (though now owned by NAB). The rates are competitive, I've been able to use my JPY by using the debit card that came with it, online. I expect I'd be able to withdraw jpy from the ATM when I'm in Japan

Prior to Covid I travelled to japan yearly. I just used the ATMs at the airport with a fee free debit card (Citibank, ING, Ubank) which offers competitive rates.

The Visa rates can be found here https://www.visa.com.au/travel-with-visa/exchange-rate-calcu…

    Mastercard https://www.mastercard.com/global/en/personal/get-support/co…

Visa is currently 92.75, and Mastercard is currently 94.75
