Maxi Trac 12V Heavy Duty Air Compressor 180lpm $89 (Regular Price $149) + Delivery ($0 C&C) @ Repco

140

Decent price for a single-cylinder 180L per minute 12V tyre air compressor. Probably made from the same factory in China for Kings and SCA's XTM air compressors, both currently selling for ~$120. Almost a must accessory for travelling off-road and needing to adjust your car tyre pressure depending on the types of tracks. Just like any new device, should do your research, read up on internet and watch some YouTube videos on how to operate this type of 12V tyre air compressor if you haven't used one before.

Looks identical to the XTM one I have which is great for the price.

    • I also have the xtm one and can confirm though it’s slower than the $400 kings one, it does the job fine.

I only learnt on my second time using it there’s a pressure release gauge on the back of the gauge that releases air. This addressed my gripe I had with it where you couldn’t read the gauge for tire pressure while it was inflating .

        $400 kings one

Is closer to $169, or $154 in a deal and I much prefer it as you don't have to turn the pump on and off for each tyre - it automatically switches off a few seconds after you stop pumping.

damn you're right - weird, i wonder which i was looking at last time then.

        • I hope that the people who are buying that Kings one replace the wire before using it, especially if they plan on mounting it somewhere unseen. The wire size is comically small considering it's supposed to carry up to 90amps. Pretty much the same as my XTM rated for 45a. Even still I've had trouble with my XTM and had the connector melt where the wire meets the circuit breaker. Luckily I had the tools to fix it with me at the time because I was in the middle of nowhere and it would have been a long drive back on 12psi.

I have an electrician mate who had one of these hooked up to an 120amp Anderson. He only got a few uses out of it before the insulation started to melt on the wire so he took it back and got 2 of the single compressor (45a) models and mounted them on either side of his canopy. If you are travelling with another person it ends up being faster than using a single dual compressor model, and you have the redundancy if (realistically when) one of them fails.

These are built as cheap as possible. The air filter falls off, the power cable gets hot and melts the insulation, the air hose gets hot at the compressor end and deteriorates and eventually splits.

    • All of this is true. I've had my XTM for 1.5 years but it's heavily modified, not because I felt like upgrading it, but because something breaks on it every few months and I have to find a way to get it going again.

    • I would agree with you…without any hesitation.
      My ARB compressor (in the carry toolbox model, can't remember exact model)single compressor;

Had the air filter vibrate off whilst using it and didn't realise till I finished all tyres and disconnected it after getting off the beach and covered in dust.

The hose connection gets extremely hot and trying to disconnect the hose from the compressor after using it is impossible. The connector is metal. I just used to put it away with the hose still attached to the compressor, without closing the lid, till it cooled.doan enough to disconnect. Usually buy time we got home. (Since changed that connection for a replacement type of connection that is rubber covered)

I recently limped back to a servo where I could air up, with 12psi in 3 tyres (deflated pressure) and one tyre with about 24 psi as the hose split, but in the two piece connection. Tyre wasn't inflating and after I noticed the issue, no matter what I did, I couldn't get a seal, enough to inflate any tyres. That was a cut out the broken hose section and tighten both pieces together, once i eventually got home. The sealing issue was made worse by the length of time the compressor run for, and how hot the connection was. That was a long slow drive back.

However, in saying that, I'd still rate ARB/TJM compressor good quality in terms of pump reliability….as silly as it sounds.

  • Supercheaptrade has their item for $89.99 EX-GST, so this is a good deal inc GST. Mind you kings has the Dual Thumper and handle press inflator (they call it 3 in 1 tool) for about $145 + $20 delivery today. It leaves me wondering if I should get the bigger one, it's only 1.5cm longer but heaviler.

One of our 4WD club member has the older model of Kings dual Thumper, goddammit it is so freaky loud and noisy, I reckon you must wear protective hearing gear to avoid getting industrial deafness.
