1998 Toyota Camry Engine Misfiring Issue

I have a 1998 Toyota Camry Vienta which is revving while on Idle or even driving when not accelerating. I already changed the Spark Plug, and Timing belt but the problem is still here. Can Anyone give me some suggestions on what may be causing this issue, please? Thanks

I uploaded a video of the engine misfiring. You can check the YouTube video.

    A 24 year old car…

But its a Camry so age is irrelevant

clean engine bay how many owners this one have?

    Fuel pump valve.

Guess the car lurches forward while you're at stand still yeah?

Go see mechanic, few hundred dollar fix if even, max $600.

It sounds like a vacuum leak.

That is normally caused by a vacuum hose having come off.

  • Is it throwing any codes?

My crystal ball says….one or multiple faults…many possibilities. Get a proper fault diagnosis.

And for the record, this looks and sounds like a “surging” issue, not a misfire issue

Throttle idle control valve? MAP/MAF sensor issue? Dirty fuel? Fuel regulator? Fuel pump? Intake air leak? Christ, the list of things that could cause this is quite long.

Lol @ changing for timing belt and spark plugs for a surging issue. That was probably over due on a 24yo Camry anyway.

      I’ll second this.

Given the limited info I would check for fault codes and then start with the fuel system if it was me. Could be something as simple as a blocked pump sock or cracked soft fuel line, presuming a 98 Camry has those things.

    • At idle, we call that 'Hunting'. Surging we say when being driven.

Sounds like you need a bigger diagnosis blanket, or more darts for the diagnosis dartboard.

If it revs ok in neutral but stumbles when accelerating it's probably an ignition problem. Most likely the leads and coil packs.

Its a Camry.. they are disposable… 24yrs old should be in a museum

    Check under the bonut.

  • Bottom plugs need engine removed.
Cheaper to have a diagnostic made.

    • Are you sure? I’ve played with a slightly older V6 Camry and it only needed the intake removed, still wasn’t exactly a fun job.

      • Wow, good work. But generally the V6 versions fetch less secondhand, dearer to register perhaps too powerful for the frame. I had a 4 but once the ceiling started to come down I sold it.

        • Victoria has region zoned registration rather than engine size so no price difference.
The interior of mine was pretty good as was the engine but all the suspension and brakes were getting close to needing replacing, at least one of the cvs was starting to click and with a car that old you just know that as you start to pull it apart you’ll find more things to replace so I figured it was time to retire it.

@mapax: I needed a car urgently after returning from overseas. Would have preferred a station wagon. All available were V6's and in communist Queensland even dirt ni**a uber drivers are forced to go down on their knees and pay for illegal drip fees and unwanted scaremonger stuff. So I got an old Camry sedan, I later found it was an ex rental that had body repairs. Was very reliable but it tended to spin out on crappy roundabouts we have to put up with. Eventually uber regos turned out to be a grand a year regardless if 4 or 6 cyl. But there is a 10 year age limit. Tomorrow we get communist fuel surcharge so glad I drive a 4 cyl even I traded the Camry for a 2l diesel now.

Did you replace the back spark plugs or just the 3 at the front?

have you tried taking it to a local independent mechanic?

  • Are you able to start the car?
