How to Earn The Qantas Green Tier in The Cheapest Possible Way

This is not so much a deal but a hack, unlock five of the six categories and you get 10k points or 50 status credits. This works best if you're about to book a flight, it's not worth it booking a flight for the 10k bonus points.

1) Reduce your impact - do the quiz on the qantas well-being app (free)

2a) Give back (3,200 points)
Go to the Qantas store and choose from Ozharvest, Unicief, Kimberley Land Council or Great Barrier Reef foundation

2b) Sustainable lifestyle. ($15.00 or 1,900 points)
While you're at the qantas store, choose TAS. I chose $15 going off the ozbargain rate of 1c per point which is better value. You also earn 150 points paying via $$$.

2c) Choose sustainable ($1.00 or 130pts)
Before you check out at the qantas store, put this in your cart. I chose $1 going off the ozbargain rate of 1c per point which is better value. You also earn 10 points paying via $$$.

3) Offset flying (varies with distance but for Sydney-Canberra one way is $0.45, usually only a couple dollars at most for domestic flights)
Before you check out and pay for your flight

And that's how you achieve the 5 out of the 6 green tier criteria and get your 10,000 points!

Total spent:
3200pts plus $16.45 for 10,160pts
or 5230pts plus $0.45 for 10,000pts

I haven't included the 6th category sustainable travel because this is exxy and not worth it. But perhaps a fellow ozbarginer might find a cheap gem to share with us all.

      Edit: I did it three categories yesterday and checked today and it got updated. (I already had one category ticked off ages ago and I’ll do the carbon offsetting activity later today will update you once im officially green :)

      from reading the australian frequent flyer forums, you can contact them to do the quiz again

      although it seems what you actually have to do is hit 4/5 and then contact them and they just manually give you the last leaf.

      You can skip the flying category and book a sustainable travel hotel but I think that would be more expensive

    earning it in one membership year you retain it for the next, but do you get the 10k points/50SC again?

    edit: answering my own question, you retain the status but

    Qantas Frequent Flyer members can achieve the Green tier on an annual basis. You’ll receive a new choice of reward during each membership year that you complete at least five of the six required activities.

      I have recently offset a future flight (Oct 2023) and I was able to get the green leaf after three days of offsetting the flight. In addition, the second passenger on the same booking also gets the leaf on their account as well.

    I want to also bump this with a tip on step 2(c) above.

    Follow the suggestion of using the $1 for sustainability delivery and add it to your cart. The item I found to be most economical was a Country Road tea towel in the Qantas store which for cash (instead of using points) was ~$13. So I just checked out and paid ~$14 (~$13+$1) to have it shipped (I think its actually more expensive at CR!).

        yes but they cost more points. It all dependant on how you value points.

        For example, unless you are churning CC for sign on bonus (I dont do that anymore), points gained via flying is pretty low. I was disappointed to see a fully paid business class ticket from SYD to Auckland only gave me 4000 points.

        Just after the initial checkout page, I get a Qantas failure page saying 'critical error'
        Tried three browsers, thinking that was the issue.

        I was able to buy Give Back and Tas Sustainable Lifestyle individually, which was why I ended up paying for Climate Positive Delivery on its own (and realised that doesn't count)

    Restarting a bit of an old thread. I’ve tried to follow the instructions but get all sorts of errors. Is it because I’m trying to purchase sustainable delivery with the donation and Tasmania offset? Do I need to buy an actual “item”?

      It's been awhile since I succeeded (back in April so it seems).

      I tried buying everything in one checkout, but the system didn't quite like that.
      I recall having to do it one by one:
      - I was able to buy Give Back and Tas Sustainable Lifestyle one at a time.
      - I think I bought Climate Positive Delivery with a Country Road tea towel, because I couldn't purchase it on its own. bettina44 had better success on this point.

        Thanks. I managed to buy Climate Positive Delivery and Give Back in the same transaction but paying only in points. Then could buy the Tas offset for $20 in a separate transaction. Very fiddle but hopefully it tracks!

      Saveful app falls in the same category as the Qantas sustainability knowledge quiz, so I doubt if Saveful app will offer you a leaf for a sustainable lifestyle category.

      On this page https://www.qantas.com/au/en/frequent-flyer/status-and-clubs… it says "As soon as the fifth category has been completed in My Account, Green Tier will be awarded. This could take up to 21 days to reflect in your account.". Once I received my fifth leaf, I didn't take note of exactly how long before my account showed the option of selecting a reward, but it was roughly 2 weeks.

    Can anyone who has selected the 50 status credits reward recall how long it took to receive it? The terms and conditions say up to 3 days, but I've heard it hits your account instantly. I thought I was on track for gold status so I went for green tier to get me closer. My plans changed and I won't be reaching gold this year. So I would only want to select the status credits reward if I can select it on the last day of my membership year (30 April) and receive it the next day or later so that it counts towards the next membership year to help me retain silver. If it's instant, I'll choose 10,000 points instead.

      I was able to find out that once you select a reward it is actioned instantly. Once you achieve your fifth leaf you have 90 days from the 'activity date' in your QFF statement of the activity that got you the leaf, to make your selection or it will be forfeited. If you achieve your fifth leaf less than 90 days before the end of your membership year, you can wait and select your reward in your new membership year. Unfortunately in my case the activity date of my fifth leaf was 30 Jan and 90 days from that date is 30 April which coincidentally happens to be the end of my membership year. So I'm unable to wait until my new membership year to select my reward. The transaction (Marketplace purchase with climate positive contribution) occurred on 26 Jan and showed up on my QFF statement on 30 Jan. If I'd waited a couple of days to make the purchase, it would have pushed the 90 days into my new membership year. I'll know for next time!
