Career Advice - Tree Change or Career Path?

Hi everyone,

I'm almost 3 years post my undergrad qualification and have recently finished a masters in my specific health field. I have promptly excelled so far in my career, am on 115k + super PA and have a clear path to management within the next 12-18 months.

I moved regionally for this position away from friends and family with my partner, and at any point can pick up travel / contract work closer to 160k PA indefinitely, only problem is doing this and moving would halt the clear career progression I have at the moment.

Ideally, I would like a tree change and to spend some time travelling before settling down, but not sure if this is the right career move as my current employer is eager to help me make the jump into management.

Just wondering everyone's thoughts.

Tree change, enjoy life and get back to it when you are ready

  • Don't underestimate how hard the past 2 years have been, I say enjoy the tree change with your partner but continue to holiday and visit family and friends. You're doing great, so enjoy a slower pace for as long as you think you need to, if you truly feel like you have the flexibility to pursue this at anytime, why rush it? :)

Thank you for this! It's a good way to look at things, I am only young (mid 20's) so no major rush

    Why not both?

why do you post like this with the most useless contributions?

      • why do you need to know?

        • why wouldn't he? It's too interesting not to ask.

My first thoughts after reading the post was the phrase: live to work or work to live.

Yeah, you could stay in your current place and move up to management in time. Will you enjoy the time waiting? Will you even enjoy working in management? Will your employer still exist in that time, in a similar or better state?

Or do you take the pay bump, do some travel, get some different experience, etc. Not sure if the contract work will help your employability later or not, but if it doesn't hurt it, why not? You can do it, come back in a while and see if you can get that job back at your former workplace (or a higher one even, depending). Or you could find another position at a related workplace or competitor, or decide to switch fields entirely. Who knows!?

Maybe make yourself a list of the pros and cons of each and rank them? May help solidify your thoughts.

    • Thanks so much for this, I appreciate the insight, given me a lot to think about!

What field are you in OP?

If you moved to management would you enjoy the job more? People often follow "career progression" so far that they hate their senior roles and feel they can't move back to the jobs that they enjoyed because of the pay and prestige gaps.
