Pet Door Installation - Glass Bifold Door

I’ve recently gotten a new puppy. I’d like to install a doggy door for him, but the only spot really is a bifold glass deal.

Has anyone had a glazier install a pet door in glass? I’ve found a bunch of advertising for vendors - but they’re all “request a hard sell, we’ll come to your house to do the pressure sale!” Deal - I don’t even know order of magnitude pricing. I’d really rather not go into the negotiations blind - or hand out my details to half a dozen vendors.

In the western suburbs of Melbourne if anyone can recommend an installer. Always prefer a tradie that convinced at least one customer to recommend them if possible.

We had a glazier install a cat door into one of our windows which is laminated. The window, now, has a bit of a crack because one of our girls hits it full tilt. It will depend on how the dog goes through it. The shock, through glass, can be a problem.

Yes. Twice now at different properties.

Price will vary greatly depending on the glass type and thickness, the brand/model of the door and whether it's done on-site or you take the door in (probably not an option for bifolds!). You'll need to get a few quotes.

Can't help you on that front.

  • If the existing glass is toughened (which it most likely is) then they will not 'install' a pet door but rather provide you with a new piece of glass with the required hole / opening created during the manufacture of the glass.

I wouldn't worry about a hard sell as they will simply measure and arrange to come back with a new panel. It's not like they will need to remove anything to quote. Just say thanks, and email me the quote.

Last time I had it done was 15 years ago, but it was only about $200 for a replacement glass panel for a sliding door.

  • Just to give you an idea, we have a pet door that we wanted to remove so I could open the sliding windows all the way. The quote I got for replacing the glass was $500

Was $420 in 2016, when others were up to double that.
