Can I Deliver Ethernet via USB Adapter into Hub for Connected Laptop?

I think the title says it all. I tried searching, but came back with lots of close-ish, but not right answers.

I'm trying to connect 2 laptops (USB-C) to a switch then hub - specifically this hub Comsol USB C to Dual HDMI Multiport Adaptor

On the hub I would have the two monitors, thus allowing M2 to have dual display. I would also like to deliver ethernet to the laptop via this hub, but it doesn't have a specific port.

Can I deliver ethernet to the laptop via a USB-Ethernet dongle, such as Comsol USB 3.0 to Gigabit Ethernet Adaptor

All the plugs will fit together ok, I'm just not sure if there would be something in the hub that would prevent the pass through of the ethernet.

Cheers

It would definitely work on Windows so as a concept, yes. No idea on an M2 Mac specifically though, they can be finicky with dongles.

    • Yes. You just need is to make sure the ethernet dongle works with an M2/M1 Mac.

Having the USB ethernet dongle being chained from another dongle (or usb-c hub) would not be an issue. Your only concern should only be with hardware device drivers.

  • Love the delivery service.

    Diagram please.

I’ve read this 5 times and I have no idea what you are trying to do, you start out talking about UBS to Ethernet and end up talking about multi-monitors.

I’m not trying to troll, but nothing here makes sense and I’m genuinely curious as to what you are trying to achieve.

    • They're just asking if they can connect the Ethernet Adaptor to the Multiport Adaptor and if it'll work on an M2 Mac.

Thanks. I can sleep now. I never would have got that.

      • Bingo

        Thanks

  • In theory it will work. In practice, you need to test, because it might not work well.

As an example, when I use my USB headset through a USB hub it works, but not well because I get static and voice breakups that I don't get when using the headset directly connected. The network adapter might work when connected via the USB hub, but have additional latency or lower throughput.

The M2 Macbooks officially supports a single external monitor. To use multiple external mnitors, you would need a dock that supports the Displaylink protocol.

  • Yeah in theory it should work but without actually trying it, bit tough to confirm. Also, you can get cheaper dongles from Amazon that include ethernet port on the hub.
