  • Whilst this is ok compared to the current RRP I picked up the same 4kg bag last month for $185.75 from my pet warehouse.

    • Ziwi had a price rise at the beginning of this month. This price is the best we can do and it should be the best price in Australia after the price rise.

  • +1

Am i missing something? $50 for a kg of dog food?

    • Yes, Peekapaw is focused on premium pet products and great savings. Brand "Ziwi" in the pet area is similar to brand "Hermes" in the bag area.

      • Wow. 99% of Australian population can't afford that per kilo price for human food. But hey, if there's a market go for it

        • +1

Its expensive and premium but you have to remember it is nutritionally balanced with a wide variety of quality ingredients. Its not just a chunk of meat, and its vastly superior to the crap sold in supermarkets full on junk fillers.

        • You also don't feed the same amount of dog food that you would if using traditional kibble.

    • -4

      IKR

You could feed your dog scotch fillet for cheaper than that.

There a sucker born every minute

      • +4

A scotch fillet is not remotely the same nutritional makeup.

        • -3

          You are right.

Scotch fillet is about 26-28% protein and this is 43%

Apparently dog food should not exceed 30% protein

          https://www.petmd.com/dog/nutrition/evr_dg_whats_in_a_balanc…

So, you are correct, they aren’t the same; scotch fillet meets the recommended protein content whilst this isn’t compliant with those guidelines

          • +2

@parsimonious one: There is no scientifically accepted position on that. Some dogs urine for example can be more toxic and kill grass on an excessively high protein diet, but its wildly subjective.

From my reading the 30% is more a generic reference to encourage people to not select crap foods full of grains and low protein, aim for that. Even in other articles on petmd they discuss such.

  • Holy hell, maybe the vet's recommended $120/8kg Purelife dog food isn't so expensive after all.

edit: oh nice you've got some of that on sale too.

    • Yes we only sell it @$92.99 and offer free delivery on orders $200+ across Australia.

The epidemic levels of cancer, diabetes, arthritis and other degenerative disease in modern pets is caused by processed food. Don't waste your money on this dehydrated muck (or any other dried dog food).

You can make your own fresh food cheaper with butcher's offcuts, a few vegetables and leftovers, or if you haven't got the time use a balanced fresh pet food provider like Lyka.

    • Offcuts? You can use steak and it will be cheaper

    • Can you also give me the free time to make all that?

      • +1

If you don't have the time, try a fresh food provider like Lyka. I use them when I'm short on time. Frozen, pre-portioned balanced food, delivered to your door. I can feed my two mid-sized dogs for 2 weeks on 8.5 kilos. Works out to $17 a kilo, $145 a fortnight. Gets cheaper the more you need. And its WAY cheaper than this dried food.

        lyka.com.au

And no, I have no affiliation with Lyka whatsoever. :-)

        • You're right. I've been looking at Raw and Fresh too.

I only use ziwi to sprinkle over his other dry food to expand the range of content in his diet.

    • +2

That is a gross exaduration to say about ziwipeak. Sure the vast majority of kibbles and can food there are real concerns, but air dried and freeze dried raw are vastly superior and even the most strident of raw feed certified nutritionists state as such. And per gram they are more nutritionally dense as not full of water, so you cannot compare weights 1:1. I too am well versed and practice raw feeding.

      • Would you feed your children a primary diet of air dried/freeze dried food? And if not, why would you feed it to your pets? For treats I'm sure its fine, but not as a staple.

Why would anyone buy $50/kilo processed food rather than fresh, when fresh is healthier and cheaper?

        • +2

Who said anything about primary? Besides, who would want to eat the same thing regardless of what it is? Not me.

Almost everyone i know who buys ziwi uses it as part of a hybrid rotation, especially for those with particularly fussy dogs. Implying it is dangerous like the conjecture over kibbles is really inappropriate.

1kg of ziwi is equivalent to 2 or 3kg of water containing food. Im not arguing against raw feeding, i practice it, but you are making huge generalisations.

          • +2

@Xizor: I remember my doctor once telling me the two things you should never believe on supplement labels are "detox" and "equivalent to".

Look, we all enjoy a bit of junk food, I'm no different, and our pets deserve a treat sometimes too. But every medical professional of ANY species will tell you the same thing: fresh food is healthier than processed food. Decades of research have shown that processed food can cause obesity, cancer, arthritis and more.

I'm not looking for an argument. All I'm pointing out here is that this exorbitantly priced processed food ($50 per kilo) is up to three times more expensive than having portion-controlled, nutritionally balanced fresh food meals delivered to your door. Everybody reading this can make their own choice about which they feel is healthier and more practical.

  • Thanks! Grabbed a 1kg bag to see if we can switch over from Kiwi Kitchens. (we have a picky pup and we use it for training)

    • Thanks for your support.

  • +2

This has to be a joke. I make up a mixture of minced turkey/chicken, mixed vegies and brown rice then freeze it in batches. Way cheaper and better

    • Absolutely! I do just the same. Real food instead of processed allows pets to live longer, happier, healthier lives. And less visits to the vet!

      • 100% but you have to be careful as its quite easy to actually neglect many vitamins and minerals despite otyerwise doing the right thing. Especially if not including organ meat and a few supplements.

        • +1

Of course. Just like people, pets need a biologically appropriate, nutritionally balanced diet. There are plenty of resources and recipes available for this, some pet insurance companies even offer them. I'm a fan of Mercola in the US, but there are plenty of local sources.

But for those who don't have the time or motivation, as I've pointed out above you can purchase nutritionally balanced meals for your dog at around one third of the cost of this processed food. I just don't get why anyone would buy this expensive stuff, other than as a travel convenience food or occasional treat.

  • +1

We have been using Ziwipeak for a few years but are looking to change, at these new prices it does not make sense anymore.

    • Agreed, Ziwi has increased prices twice this year, totall about 25%, which is definitely crazy. As a retailer, it’s out of our control and what we can do is trying our best to make prices best among all the retail shops.

  • +1

I only did a price comparison on one item, the nexgard tablets, but the “discounted” price is pretty much what everyone else appears to be selling them for so I’d suggest anyone looking to buy from these guys do a quick Google to check the price at other retailers first

    • If you find some items cheaper please just share the links here to let others know. We checked most Australian pet shop websites to make sure our prices are the best, regardless a little bit or much, before marking them as real deals. Much appreciate it if you can help do more comparison for us.

      • +1

        https://99petshops.com.au/p/3315/Nexgard-Spectra-Large-Dog-1…

        Your price is comparable

But I think your claim of 45% off is misleading unless all those other places are coincidentally having a 45% off sale too

Plus if one was to chose auto-renew option it is cheaper again

        • The RRPs we are using are all from suppliers or manufacturers. They are the same with the ones of Pet Circle, Budget Pet and all the retailers who use official RRPs instead of their own.

          • @Allen Chen: Sure… this issue comes up a bit

Do you really thinks it’s a bargain if it’s selling at the same/ similar price to other retailers usual price though?

Personally, if the price is just on par with the going market price (even it’s a “reduction” from some fanciful RRP) I wouldn’t consider that a bargain

            • @parsimonious one: Yes I do. We’re trying to make most of prices as the lowest ones. From your angle, only a few specific products are at the lowest prices but quite similar with other stores. But if there’s a tiny advantage for everything compared with all the other stores, it’s a huge bargain.

              • @Allen Chen: 🤷‍♂️ I guess Bargain is in the eye of the beholder

Ultimately the ozbargain community and the mods will decide if a post that lists an item for a price that most retailers are selling at is a bargain or not

                • @parsimonious one: Agreed, there is a limit of post based on the recent votes, which is the result of all the beholders’ reviews.

  • +1

Not going to buy it as it's ridiculous what pet food companies get away with but i do think the OP is offering competitive prices.

    • Agreed, competitive but not a bargain. IMHO
