Best Interior Paint for The Money

Evening everyone.
Hoping everyone enjoyed a nice relaxing public holiday.

Just wondering if anyone has advice on which interior paint I should use in the painting of my new house. Most likely going for a crisp white colour throughout. Looking for a paint that isn’t rubbish but also good value for money. Let me know your suggestions and I’ll add them to the poll (if that’s possible).

Bonus points for where I should buy the paint if there are any cheap places in WA. Otherwise I may just end up at bunnings.

Thanks!

After spending this afternoon using British Paints enamel, I wouldn't even bother thinking about the rest of their range. It was streaky and not as good as the Dulux stuff I've used in the past.

I have used the Dulux Kitchen & Bathroom over the top of a mould blocking primer and it was brilliant. Looks really good, easy to use, great coverage. Not cheap given its a specialist one, but worth it if you have mould on your ceiling forming.

I use Dulux Wash and Wear and Berger. Price wise, Berger is usually a little cheaper, especially for trim work and ceilings.

In terms of where to buy, try your local Inspiration Paints. They have a club and usually send out deals etc plus will keep your paint purchases on file

  • I think if you are planning to repaint regularly, to keep the look up to date, then cheapest paint is adequate. You can live with a little less durability and a bit more fuss in application.

If you have a lot of painting, want it to last, and want it done quickly, the Dulux is probably worth the premium cost.

Dulux is the best. Kitchen and Bathroom has an enhanced Mould inhibiter in it but it's only needed if you have existing Mould issues as the standard wash and wear already has it.
Superhide is good for covering dark colours, that's about it and not worth the extra price point.

Taubmans Endure is the best cheaper alternative to Wash and Wear.

BP is not bad, owned by Dulux so you at least get some of the same tech.

Spring just no. Don't do it to yourself.

Dulux Wash & Wear FTW - particularly when it comes to cleaning (with a damp microfibre cloth or melamine foam) and maintenance (eg DIY patching and touch-ups) as the low-sheen bases are super easy to blend.

Have done acres of Reno painting in the last ten years and have found that Dulux, Wattyl and Solver are very good. The key is good prep - wash with sugar soap etc, and decent quality brushes and rollers.
For white trims - frames etc I always go to Taubmans Ultimate. It is a bit tricky to put on, (technical term is b@st@rd…) but finishes almost stroke free and durable as… and doesn’t go yellow after a few years.

Don’t put on cheap paint. It takes more coats to get cover, doesn’t wash well and you’ll repaint sooner. Which means more of your life prep and painting. Unless you have been a very bad person, you don’t deserve this.
Don’t use cheap brushes for trim - particularly water based. A really frustrating process. Buy a couple of good brushes and take care of them. And don’t lend them to anyone.
Mid range throw away roller covers do OK.
Worth buying a drop cloth too. They last for years and don’t get caught in ladders, feet etc at the worst moments.

I get a reasonable discount from the RAA, and go to the Wattyl/Solver stores - there are some in Perth, but it just is not worth sacrificing quality for a couple of dollars when you are putting all those hours in.

Premium and budget paints are not worth the money. Get something mid range. Consder buying from a paint shop rather than a big green shed. The big green shed gets incentives to promote different products, the paint shop might get incentives too, but is more likely to be staffed by people who know paints and also want to back their product. The big green shed is about product turnover, not giving you the best product.

  • Taubman Endure is not bad.

Do not get the Easy Coat.
