Coffee Machine - Breville Dual Boiler deals?

I'm looking at getting a coffee machine. Currently spending $10 a day at the cafe which is burning dollars…but I've missed the last few sales on the Breville Dual Boiler for ~$800-900 and now the cheapest I can find is about $1500 as they are only selling it with the grinder.

Is there any alternatives to consider? I have been looking second hand but everyone seems to want 700-900 for the dual boiler and given it's not got a long warranty its probably better to pay retail…tossing up if I should wait for a sale (which seems unlikely now they don't sell it separately anymore) or just bite the bullet and pay; given it will start my savings happening faster from cheaper coffees.

I have all the usual JB Hifi Corporate, TGG Commercial, etc etc…but can't spot a deal anywhere. In Sydney.

Appreciate any info or thoughts! :)

  • I haven’t bought refurbished but have had a few cheaper units. I got the dual boiler / grinder pack for $1299 about a month ago at Costco and I’m very glad I did. Miles better coffee than anything I’ve had at home before.

    • Seems its $1599 now unfortunately - didn't realise costco was selling it! :(

Thought I saw a few Breville Barista pro deals have pop up lately, good machine w grinder integrated.
Think rrp is back to about $870
Really happy with this machine so are mates/family with it, if you didn’t wanna drop the extra $$ on dual boiler. Takes 2 seconds for the steam to kick in once you’ve extracted the coffee (not a long and slow wait like older style machines)

  • Edit: Seem to be able to buy a refurbished/factory second dual boiler 2 year warranty/inspected by Breville for $1215… link - has anyone bought a refurbished one? - or $1585 on TGG Commercial ($370 more) - brand new…seems this is the best deal going around at the moment….

Have a look at the Delonghi Dedica. They cost something like $300 rrp and $150-$200 on sale. Take up very little bench space and do an excellent job. I love my coffee and have 2-5 cups a day which it handles without a hitch. I have owned mine since the first lockdown in 2020.

Is the reason just because it'll be a bit faster to start producing steam? I don't think it takes long enough to make it worth paying $1k more. I have my breakfast routine down to a fine art - 1 shot of water while filling the basket and tamping, tip it out and extract a shot, put toast on, fill little milk jug, turn on steam for about five to ten seconds until it's coming out strongly enough, froth milk, pour and clean nozzle, then toast pops up. Can't imagine much more speed adding any value.

You could always get a Dedica while waiting for the Breville to have a good sale. If there is no sale in say 2 months you can choose to then just stick with the Dedica or pay the full price for the Breville and sell the Dedica. Meanwhile at least you aren't paying $10/day

    • Good food for thought. I don’t make a heap of coffees, just one a day each for me and the gf, so speed doesn’t really worry me too much - I just had thought the dual boiler makes better coffee similar to cafe but I could be wrong and something like your suggestion is no different to taste and it’s only the speed? I won’t be having large parties needing to make 10 coffees in a row or anything like that to be honest…

      • The dedica makes fine coffee. It’s weakness is really the steam wand. That thing is rubbish. And yes, there are mods you can do, but at that point you might consider a different machine. Anyway I have one because it makes great coffee for a great price and is small. Just wish the steam wand wasn’t utter trash.

      • What's your skill level with steaming? If you've ever worked as a barista the steam wand may disappoint you, but if not, it does a fine job. Probably a better job than you could do with a classic steam wand if you don't have the skills. As djsweet says you can replace it with a steam wand from a Rancilio machine but you might prefer to pay the extra to not have to do that mod (and risk breaking anything too).
Given I've never done a barista course I prefer the Dedica steam wand as it is so easy and consistent. You slide the ring down to get more air, until it reaches the volume you want, then slide it back up until it is hot and silky enough, keeping it at an angle, and you get pretty good steamed milk every time. Something to consider anyway!

You aren't paying for speed, you're paying for consistency and flavour. Higher-end machines with boilers will take longer to heat up compared to thermoblocks.

Oh ok, I got that wrong then I guess.

I feel like someone who doesn't own a machine yet should get a cheaper one, then when they've identified what they're unsatisfied with they can upgrade to get those things. Not much point spending >$1k on a coffee machine and not being able to tell the difference between the coffee it makes and coffee from a <$200 machine.

  • so i have a Breville Barista Express Impress, its honestly the best thing in the kitchen

    • i've been eyeing this one out…what are your thoughts on it?

makes better coffee's than my local cafe

        • Are you in Malbourne? Because the coffee is just batter in Malbourne. That might be why your lacal cafe is so baaad. :(

You should move to Brunswick East.

  • Pretty sure Costco Docklands had this one for, roughly, $600 yesterday

not sure what people think of it.

  • I use a basic sunbeam em4300 got it second hand for 80 bucks and on its 5th year also got the basic $100 sunbeam grinder I find if you get decent beans and want a coffee for home it's actually really decent for how little you pay !!

  • Unless I can get a Breville DB by itself for a reasonable price I think I'll be moving on from the model, having to pay for another grinder which I already have and don't need doesn't make sense, not sure why Breville are only selling this as a package.

The Lelit Elizabeth should make for a great alternative.

  • For anyone interested, I managed to get a BDB and Smart Grinder Pro off Facebook marketplace - for $900; under 2 years old, had done 1000 shots, still in warranty…

Now, my next quest is figuring out how to make a decent tasting coffee - after the first one was dreadful!! Have posted a new thread asking for help…. would appreciate any advice :)
