QBE Car Insurance experience and suggestions

Hi all,

It’s come the time of the year I need to renew my car insurance, and as everyone is aware since last two years car insurance quotes sky rocketing every time. I am with Allianz currently. The renewal quote 15 - 20 % higher than previous year. I was just checking quotes with all other providers & QBE is the cheapest than all other. Just received as well promotional offer $100 off for first year in mail from Australia Post car Insurance, underwriter for them is QBE insurance .If I go with QBE through Aus Post it makes it more cheaper. But the biggest confusion is should I trust QBE? the reviews are horrible about them and not just horrible from the reviews it appears if for any reason I need to put a claim they will give every reason to avoid claim, on the other side I think reviews for all insurance companies are not good either. Just need suggestions if any of you have good experience with QBE and the last question prevails if they are such a bad how can they hold their insurance licence in Australia, please shed some light..Thanks.

the reviews are horrible about them

Every insurance company is like this.

If you have an average or good experience with them, do you really feel the need to jump onto productreview.com and submit a review, or Google reviews? no you don't. But if you have a BAD experience, you feel compelled to do this.

Reviews for things like insurance companies are not a representative cross section of their business.

At the end of the day they are all the same (except the cheap ones, they will screw you over extra ), so just go with whoever is a combination of biggest + cheapest + best benefits.

I just renewed mine and switched from NRMA to QBE. NRMA wanted $1300, QBE wanted $950.

    • $1300, QBE wanted $950.

      Damn juicy savings

Some of them are just Higher for no reason.

It pays to not be loyal

    • Agree with you @dchurch1

  • I would avoid. Made a claim for a motorcycle, full comprehensive through qbe. Made a claim on 22/11/19, was deemed a total loss on the 26th, didn't receive the payout till 30/01/20.

So 5 weeks to pay out?

That's not unheard of and pretty standard tbh. What're you expecting? Next day?

What you're saying is that you got what your insurance was meant for but you were just unhappy it took what you deemed as a while

      • Mine got crashed into, written off, and settlement paid within two weeks. NRMA

          Sample size is two here.

I'm guessing factors in review of their claim took longer.

@coffeeinmyveins: Mine took five months to find I was not at fault if that’s anything (so excess was taken from settlement, then refunded)

      • 9 and a half weeks is how long it took from deemed a total loss. 4 to 5 weeks to be paid out? Sure. But 9 is pretty unreasonable

How likely are you to make a claim?

Personally have had one claim between my partner and I in over 10years. Having a little bit of a headache for that is probably worth the savings. Other people seem to make a claim every other year, not worth the saving if it means difficult claims for that often.

    • if you're claiming every year then your premiums will shoot through the roof and should probably look at how you drive :D

How is it my fault people like driving into into my car? (Five not-at-fault claims between 2015 and 2022)

We needed to dealt with insurance company twice in last 4 years, one when my car was parked in parking in a mall & another time my wife’s car was parked on the street near my house and someone hit the car and left the scene. I prefer to have comprehensive insurance since then. No one knows when you are in need of insurance.

Definitely need comprehensive insurance for piece of mind, but if you don’t make claims often then going with an insurer that is cheaper, but has a slightly worse reputation for processing might worth the savings.

  • The reviews are accurate. Based on my interactions during claims, these guys seem to very utterly incompetent. I think these guys are outsourcing a lot of their work. Some simple stuff like having to re-send attachments because they could not open, to misunderstanding some key details clearly spelled out in a written email. Totally useless and best to avoid!

I had a motorcycle claim with qbe where my 11 month old bike was stolen - cctv footage and everything. Their investigation was a nightmare

When they finally accepted liability, they refused to acknowledge the “new replacement “ clauses in the policy, and low balled the settlement figure.

A formal complaint was the only way I got them to pay out anywhere near actual market value

    Never again

  • if they are such a bad how can they hold their insurance licence in Australia

QBE is an international insurer and one of the big three Aussie general insurers.

There's an element of you get what you pay for, or are you looking for a free lunch?

E.g. if they outsource their staffing, are stricter on claims, then you get the benefit of lower premiums, but don't expect them to be as generous, easy to deal with as more expensive insurers.

Obviously there isn't a linear relationship between premium and benefit in total and for individual customers, so use your judgement.

There is a well known inertia tax for customers that remain with insurers blindly, but some insurers also provide years of loyalty discounts (you shouldn't just blindly accept this, but you need to know how to optimise) and multiple product discounts. Compare the net of this across all your offerings, taking reviews into account, over a number of years. E.g. due to loyalty and multiple products, some customers have a 25% discount on top of say the premium you pay. The question for you is do you make an investment for the long term or not and instead jump around each year.

  • Thank you everyone for taking the time and put their inputs, finally made my mind and ended buying QBE insurance, I am paying half than what I would have paid to Allianz. Will update you incase need to deal with QBE regarding the claim.
