Looking at a SIM as an NBN Alternative

With my latest NBN plan with Belong going up I’m starting to see less and less reason for the expense.

I use my mobile data when using my phone and the xbox (hotspot). It’s just as quick, if not quicker. That leaves the NBN used for some streaming on the TV and the odd time I use the laptop. I could hotspot these as well but it will be probably be a pain and a drain on my phone battery.

I currently use Boost mobile for my mobile data.

Which leads me to my question and it might be a silly question. Is there an easy way to use say a Boost mobile sim for all internet needs in a home? Is there a way to do this without a constant drain on my phone? Is this something people do?

In an ideal world I’d buy one of those boost sims for $170 a year (with cashback) and run everything off that. Only problem is that I don’t want to run it off my personal phone and I want all devices to connect to it automatically.

Hope that makes sense. Thanks

    Buy a 4g router.

When my NBN went down I had my spare phone connected via usb to a travel router. My main router was connected to the travel router through ethernet.

And the whole house used my spare phone's mobile data.

Get a cheap phone to hotspot only.

    Or

Buy A Telstra 4g modem may work, it's only about $15 odd 2nd hand. As it works with all other resellers like belong and Woolworths (I've used and tested) Most likely work with boost. Or you can just buy Woolworths sim to use for data only monthly. Currently on sale. For half price and has $6 cashback.

Get on ebay and grab an unlocked Huawei B818 4G router for about $160 - will do everything you want in a wifi router, has decent 4G and is cheap.

You need some time to think and plan it, meanwhile every other company is offering 1month free trial of thr 5G unlimited net for free for 1st month, start from iinet and keep going for few months and decide :)

  • Thanks for the suggestions. I’m looking at a 4G router but I have some questions.

So if I buy a 4G router and a sim do I just put the sim in the router and then it acts like a wireless network? Can I just have all my devices automatically connect to it like it’s a wifi?

Yes, make sure your router is placed at a strong signal spot.

Yes, just think of 4G Router as a Mobile HotSpot - All other perks of Mobile.
