Belong nbn Price Increase and Speed Decrease

Just received the following email from Belong:

We are simplifying our plans and making sure all our customers that are paying the same amount get access to the same benefits.

This change means the typical evening speeds (7pm-11pm) for your $60 home internet plan will change from 30 Mbps to 25 Mbps (download) and from 20 Mbps to 5 Mbps (upload) to match the current $60 Starter plan we offer.

Speeds experienced may be lower due to various factors including your in-home setup and wiring.

Due to increases in the cost of supplying your nbn service, the price of your current internet plan will increase by $5 per month.

So speeds are dropping from 30/20 to 25/5 but prices are going up $5/month as well. Does this seem like a confusing move to anyone else?

I'd been with Belong for 2 years and was happy paying dirt cheap for internet that does what I need it to but will probably look elsewhere (doubt I can stream to two devices with 25/5…)

Moving house soon so almost as many hoops to transfer as to find a new ISP anyway!

      • +7

Plenty of 50/20 Mbps options for around that price and cheaper for the first 6 to 12 months.
        More Telecom/Tangerine, Exetel, Superloop.

Time to find a new provider? I spoke about it last time but there is no such thing as a loyalty discount when it comes to Internet, utilities or financial services.. It's often called the Lazy Tax.

    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/comment/12661595/redir

Currently paying $69 for 100/20mbps with More Telecom. You do need to have a Commbank card though.

    • Looks like a good option! Been happy with them?

      • +1

Your mileage will vary, will depend on a lot of factors like your NBN tech, POI, networking hardware et cetera.

It's fine for me, no drop-outs and I have no complaints about the quality of service on FTTP. I also haven't had the need to deal with their customer service yet.

Have previously been with Superloop and Aussie Broadband and have no complaints about them either, but I might just be lucky.

        • I've also recently switched to More, but they are having lots of trouble connecting using my Belong Router. Did you BYO router or get their associated one?

    • +1

I got an offer from Superloop today for a permanent $15 off my gigabit plan as my new member discount was expiring (which was $20). I can't figure out if it's just them trying to build loyalty or because I'm a serial churner, this is my second time on Superloop and my 4th or 5th ISP over the past 3 years or so.

Them and Origin are the only two that I have no complaints about though and Origin costs a fortune, so they might have just bought a permanent customer (until their pricing goes up). Only complaint is their crappy 3TB cap, but I've only once hit it.

      • +1

Superloop gave me a 1yr discount (not quite as good as the new customer discounts but pretty close) to not churn away on a 100/20 plan, so I think it is their attempt at retention just with different details for different ppl/plans.

Still bullshit and exactly as scrimshaw said: they deserve no loyalty as new customers get the better deal. But this little bone they threw me was enough for me to go "meh" and not churn this time. Smaller lazy tax but still lazy tax.

        • You can mostly partly NBN for the new customer discounts. NBN was offering RSPs a discount as part of their "focus on fast" promo, any new person who signed up to 100mbps or higher the RSP got a discount for 6 months and they passed it onto the consumer to win new people. It was technically only for customers who'd never had 100mbps before but the ISPs gave it to everyone to make it less confusing.

Granted, they still offer it now, but I'm still better off than a new Superloop signup. I have gigabit still, whereas the top speed they offer now is 500mbps. I actually get well over 500 too (I'm getting 600 right now on this desktop over wifi5)

It also might be the CVC cost thing though, I WFH and most of my data usage is during the day, not the peak evening time. So I'd be a great customer to have.

    30/20

there is no such tier in NBN, they just shape 50/20, that might be the reason for the change.

this would be a better deal
    https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/684224

    • I'm on the same 30/20 plan. Used to be $55/month.

Seems like they're doing the dodgy by putting OP on a lower plan.

      • +1

There is no such thing as a 30/20Mbps plan from the NBN or the 20/5Mbps they are planning to put the OP on, so they are just shaping the 50/20 plan tier.

I agree, they are being a little dodgy/shifty, but nothing illegal, so, time to look for a new RSP for the OP :)

  • Hmm. I'm on the same plan. Haven't received the same email.

I think exetel is the next best plan on 50/20. Apparently can call up after intro period and negotiate $60/month

    • +1

more telecom has $53.9 for 50/20

      • Thanks. I had forgotten about that one.

I'm not a fan of jumping through the hoop of getting a CBA bank card but have signed up anyway.

So speeds are dropping from 30/20 to 25/5 but prices are going up $5/month as well. Does this seem like a confusing move to anyone else?

    No, they want more money.

I'd been with Belong for 2 years and was happy paying dirt cheap for internet

This is the confusing part. They weren't the cheapest. They weren't very good. Why stay for so long?

    • +1

How was it not the cheapest? For reference speeds were actually 50/20 and price was $55/mth for first year and then $60 after that.

All of the competitors I've seen havent gotten as low as $60/mth.

Internet was perfectly fine with them the whole time too, never had issues streaming.

      • Apart from those offering free internet, like Dodo and Aussie currently, including at gigabit speeds, there's also multiple providers offering 50/20 at under $55, let alone under $60. https://www.whistleout.com.au/Broadband/Search?data=1000000&…

        • Thats a great search engine, cheers!

All the ones linked go above $60 after 6 months though. Can definitely get a cheaper price than what I was saying if you're happy to change provider every 6 months though.

          • +1

@theknight27: Not that I'm recommending them, but MyRepublic will 100% match any price for an entire year. I have also had success getting others to price match. Of course some absolutely refuse to negotiate.

Yes, to get the best discounts, other than freebies, you need to switch every six months, or at least negotiate with the provider you're with. Again, some are more amenable to this than others.

There's also the Finder website to search, but it doesn't let you link URL searches, so you have to change the settings yourself manually each time.

      • Yeah, they were the cheapest from my research previously. The 20mb/s upload speed was the really good bit.

      • I used to be on 100/20 for $60 a month with telstra till I moved to fttp

  • +6

Belong just served you a shit sandwich

  • Got the same email :(
It does say they'll credit the account $5 per month to cover increase for first 6 months.

    • Not on my email sadly. Looks like I'll move to Superloop for 6 months or to Leaptel for 12

      • That's strange, I assumed the $5 credit would be for every customer affected.

        • I've been with them for near on 3 years so I guess this is the reward for my loyalty

          • @namenotspecified: I have been with them about the same time and can't really see any reason why, the only thing I can think of is I have referred the max 10 users to them for NBN and Mobile.

          • +2

@namenotspecified: Either way, $60/month for 20Mbps down and 5Mbps is terrible value.
Should be getting 50/20 for this price point or thereabouts.

        • I got the $5 credit too.

          • @theknight27: Which part of email saying credit?

            • @CyberMurning: It was at the end of the email, I didn't quote it above;

You will not see an increase until 1 May 2023

While the regular price of your plan will change on 1 November 2022, we will give you a $5/mth credit for 6 months. This way, you won’t experience a price increase until 1 May 2023. If you disconnect this service (or transfer it to someone else) before your 6 month period ends, the remaining credits will no longer apply.

So, from 1 November 2022 you will see your monthly bill increase from $60 to $65 – but you will also see a $5 credit each month for the next six months.

              • @theknight27: ok i dont have that paragraph..
hmm i wonder why ? anyone know ? i am with belong since like 3 years ago. initially on 1 year contract then month to month.
yes i am with the grandfather plan

You will see the increase on your bill from 1 November 2022, where you will be charged $75 instead of $70 each month. Everything else on your service will remain the same.

Weird thing is, when I look on their website the $75 plan is 48mbps (I am currently synced at 60/22, despite my line being capable of 130mbps according to nbnco technician)

I guess Belong just doesn't want us to belong with them anymore. Hard to switch as I get better ping than other isps, even better than households closer to melb and I have a static IP included in said price. First time I've ever copped a price increase with no better plan, what a crap time to be alive.

    Telstra being Telstra

  • +2

Side Q; what do you do with your old modems when you switch providers? Last couple have included new ones which in hindsight is wasteful on my part. Do you use them, sell them, give them away? I figure better give to my local op shop than collect dust.

    • +1

Modems are rarely just modems, they are two in one devices combining a low-to-mid range router and with added function of a VDSL modem. In the vast majority of cases, the modem isn't locked to one particular ISP, it'll just need reconfiguring or re-setting.

Depending on the person's needs, the modem router can be repurposed as a networking switch or just a pure router but because they tend to be pretty entry level (basic), they don't usually fetch a very good price on the second hand market (many people opt to get one for free from their ISP, which is common if they're locking themselves into 1 or 2 year contracts).

    • +1

Planning to keep the old belong modem when switching. I don't believe there should be anything different about setting it up, it is just tp-link modem underneath. But will investigate a bit more first.

      • @randysal I'm wanting to do that as well but worried it will be hard to configure

    • -1

what do you do with your old modems when you switch providers?

      storm drain…

    • Some, like the Tesltra ones sell pretty well, so I sell those. Others I have given to other people. If no one I know wants it, and it can't sell, bin it.

  • I got the same notice so am now looking for a new provider as well.
It's not a confusing move really. They have just done the same with mobile plans. They wer one of the cheapest so I presume they were running a loss for a quite some time to get their name up there. Now they aren't all that different to anyone else, just telstra without an overseas call centre.

  • -2

You can shop around the various RSPs, but you have to point the finger of blame at NBNCo.

NBNCo's business model is based on finding ways to get more and more and more revenue per user each year, so they can pay off their huge debts, and become profitable. So that eventually they are a good enough investment so they can be sold.

Unless the present or a future government chooses to pay off some of NBNCo debt, or abandon the idea that they will ever become worth selling, NBNCo has to keep pushing up the speed they can persuade end users to pay so they ghet more from them, or if they can't then make them pay more for what they are getting now.

The RSPs are just passing on the ever higher prices NBNCo is charging them. They can't absorb them because reselling NBNCo's wholesale product already has narrow margins.

An NBN service will keep getting more expensive every year.

The NBN simply cost too much to build for use of its services to be able to compete on price with alternatives like 5G. If it was going to be treated a business that made enough profit to pay its way, rather than an essential service provided by government, it needed to have been able to built for a lot less than it eventually did cost. Labor got its original back of the drink coaster maths wrong when it was convinced that it could provide a fibre connection to every premises for an average of $5,000. It got conned by people who once Labor committed to it then "discovered" that it would cost a lot more, and the numbers didn't work any longer.

Certainly NBNCo was happy that the government kicked out Huawei, who was by far the cheapest provider of 5G products, on spurious "national security" grounds, so they wouldn't have the problem of trying to compete with an even cheaper 5G alternative to the NBN.

    • Oh, and higher inflation like we have at the moment will just make the increases in what NBNCo charges RSPs even bigger, and the price increases RSPs have to charge customers in turn even bigger.

    • +3

"then "discovered" that it would cost a lot more,"

That's the most ridiculous bit of gaslighting bullshit I've read in here this decade. The "Discovery" was by a crew who promised " Sooner, faster, cheaper" and delivered a slower mish-mash of fibre and 18th century decayed infrastructure at a far higher price [ boosted by buying a rotten copper network that hadn't been maintained, paying Telstra for its loss, then giving Telstra a long-term standing contract to maintain it] a couple of years later than the original roll-out would have happened.

    • +2

First time I've ever heard of making the mistake to privatise the service monopoly again. Whole point of building the nbn was to stop that monopoly and go back to a necessary service remaining in the hands of the public.

Such a shame liberal ruined it and if they get back in power would be pushing to make a quick buck on it.

  • Probably the thread should include belong mobike as wel. Just got similar email basically increase to $15 from $10

So, when is the best time to churn?

For nbn: few days before end of month as they bill at 1st each month in advance. Ex. Bill 1st of November for month of November.

    How about for mobile phone?

  • +1

There still isn’t much cheaper out there. Happy to be corrected as I would leave for a cheaper deal. Most of those that are cheaper only are for ‘the first 6 months’ then they go up to $69.95.

    • spintel = $54 for first 6m then $64.95
leaptel = $xx for the first 12m cant remember the detail but longterm spintel is a bit cheaper

    • Agreed, the main thing is the speed drop for me - I'd been getting 50/20 speeds on the 30/20 plan but I'm sure that'll change on the 25/5 plan.

  • +3

Yip.. I'm in the same boat. Was a wtf moment when I read the email today, I had to re-read the email to fully understand how much of a double whammy price increase and speed decrease is. I'll switch over to spintel (I guess) for same after discount period pricing but double the speed. Belong.. Nope.. More like Begone.

    • are you going to switch now ? or wait for next month? the price increase eff. nov so we still have time.
i want to switch on weekend, if i do it this month i will pay double to both belong and spintel hehe

      • Would make financial sense to change over towards the end of the pay cycle.. Unless they reimburse.

        • +2

Nah. No prorata. So yeah ill take a gamble and wait for next month (mid) hopefully spintell still doing the same promo

          • @CyberMurning: Same boat

            • @HeyJes: @hey jes i have moved to spintel

              • @CyberMurning: Hey ChiMot thanks for letting me know - I’ll be moving to Spintel in a few days also. Are you now still using the same Modem Belong provided, for Spintel? Was it all smooth and not having to reset Wifi? Keen to hear your experience ;)

                • +1

                  @HeyJes: same belong modemrouter.

i nominated a day, then on that day around 11am internet down, right away got sms from spintel im with them, then got email with user and password.
connect cable from laptop to modem, change setting to pppoe, enter credential above, then reset - wait 3-5 mins for the first sync. then all good.
with belong got max 35 speed now 46-47-48
next day received email from belong say bye bye Chimot…. (to be safe just tell belong you are terminating effective date xxx)

                  • @CyberMurning: Fantastic thank you! I’ll see how I go. Hopefully no drama!!!

                  • @CyberMurning: FTTN switchovers have been pretty quick for me in the past too, but I selected a day earlier this time just in case (so it wouldn't fall over the weekend if it didn't happen right away)

One other reason I chose Superloop over Spintel is they also use IPoE like Belong so with any luck a modem reboot is all that will be needed, no need for a tech callout to the in-laws :D

                    • @bamzero: Update – I just moved from Belong to Spintel today. After I entered the PPPoE username and password it won’t connect to the internet. I had to use the old Spintel supplied modem (think (Netcomm NF18ACV). :(

                      • @HeyJes: Weird. You are fttn right? Turn off modem wait 3 mins turn on wait til all lights solid.
Belong modem definitely works with spintel no doubt

                        • @CyberMurning: Unfortunately HFC. I have tried the same PPPoE username and login with both modems and only the Spintel supplied Netcomm modem works.

Got the same email, having issues cancelling my service online at the moment…

    • Why cancel? Should we go to the new provider and sign up and they will take over from belong?

      • Yes, I’m wondering how this works too.

Do you sign up with another provider and set the changeover date just before the next Belong bill?

I think my Belong is just the 1st of every month so is it best to set the changeover a couple of days before that and send a message to Belong that you have canceled?

BTW I’m most concerned with the lower upload speed using security cameras at home. No two ways about it, I’ll be moving away.

        • probably he just doesnt need the number anymore maybe like a burner phone previously. who knows.

        • Belong are supposed to receive a notice of your churn away and charge you pro-rata. But given how dodgy all these businesses are in modern times I would email/call them once you have your expected 'activation' date and inform them it will be canceled on that day.

          • @A-mak: nope, no prorata with belong, and yes they will know our churn if you are fttn, if not fttn better tell them

      • +2

You need to cancel especially if you have FTTP since the 4 ports means you can have up to 4 separate plans active at any time.

Same yesterday, must have been hit with many cancellations - worked for me today though!

Thanks for the heads up, the in-laws are on this plan. Let it ride when they went from $55 to $60 as they still get 50Mbps but $65 for 25/10 is breaking point.
They hadn't said anything but checked and they got the email too. Speed change 1/11, $5 credit for 6 months (same as new customers get on this plan)

Pity about the 6 month discounted pricing trend, hard to set and forget for them. Might even consider 5G

Edit: Just noticed its not even 25/10, only 25/5.. and now I'm looking whats with RSPs omitting the upload speeds now? Exetel/Superloop still show it. Some others have to dig through the CIS, some don't even show it on there.

    • Well, 5G is out. Not available in the area despite the flyers for it in the letterbox.

Just noticed this on iiNet too…
"The below monthly price for our NBN12, NBN25 and NBN50 plans will soon increase by $5/month. The monthly prices for our NBN100, Superfast and Ultrafast plans are not changing."

Seems to be a recurring theme on Whirlpool. Same comments for TPG, Telstra, Optus.

      Bloody NBN…

  • Not sure how you're going to stream two devices with 30 even. 25 isn't going to make bugger all difference.

Make a choice. Cheap plan no 4K or multiple streaming, or 50/75/100 plan, pay more and do what you like.

On 80/12 or so here for $79.00. $19 more than you but complete piece of mind with speeds fast enough to do anything I want.

NBN doesn't sell 30/20 so it was a 50/20 plan that was supposed to be soft capped at 30 but wasn't. Plus when most Ozbargainers probably joined it was $55 which was pretty good for 50/20 unlimited.

      • Yeah this is the answer ^

I could online game with YouTube on in the background whilst my partner would stream in 4k in the living room without issue. We'll be stuffed on 25/5.

      • Yeah I think the neg is unecessary but BASED ON WHAT WAS WRITTEN I don't think anyone would really notice a difference between 25 and 30. Fact.
Was unaware of the practice of soft capping a 50Mbps plan down to 30 (who comes up with this crap?) but $60 would be a lot to pay for 30 especially with Belong. I was not wrong, just didn't know ISPs did this.

Then I pointed out you can do a cheaper 25 plan and miss out on the benefits or go to the higher plans, pay more and have all the benefits.

Then I said you can basically make a choice.

So the neg was for???? Not knowing a soft capped 30 plan existed? Basically his plan is going down in speed and paying more.

Vote with your money and get out of there. Unless I'm missing something $65 for 25Mbps is crazy right?

          So the neg was for?

          Dunno, wasn't me

I upvoted you as I think you were being reasonable

I've done the switch from belong to Spintel. All good. Activation less than 24 hours. In the mean time I upgraded my router to the Basic model TP-Link AX1500 (WiFi 6), improvement in signal reaching other parts of the home. So long belong!

    • hey, did you nominate the date previously?

so how accurate they actions it ? i mean did you nominate 28/9 for the move over and what time it actually happen? just trying to change with less disruption (wfh) thanks

      • I nominated 29th of this month for belong account termination couple days ago, at the same time signed up with spintel (you have two options 1. Nominate a join date or 2. Connect ASAP) i went with #2.. So to be confident that it'll be changed over before next belong bill cycle. Spintel sent out the required passwords for NBN, soon after I got a message from belong confirming change over and account termination. Too easy.

        • Are you on fttp?
Oh yes we need to tall belong.
Im planning next month, end of October, on Saturday.

          Thanks

          • @CyberMurning: Yes FTTP. PPoE router setup. Belong speed drop and price hike starts 1st of next month. Depending on what plan you're on you'll notice a decrease in speed and less money in your pocket.

@Cereal-Bowl: Nope my email says from 1 nov.

              • @CyberMurning: Ahh.. Yes, my bad. 1st Nov it is. Not sure how long spintel will keep the deal up for, just keep that in mind. I guess you can lock it in with a set date join up.

    • Will switch the in-laws over towards end of month, looking like Spintel will be the go for 6 months at least.

No complaints about Spintel over the last week? (In-laws are on FTTN so hopefully switchover is just as painless)

      • in-laws over towards end of month

        Me too. Also fttn. Belong

        All good on spintel.

    • Planning the same thing and was wondering if Belong NBN modem would work with spintel? The thing is I could not find where I could change the internet username and password through Belong’s IP gateway settings - seem disallowed! Annoying

      • Read above. User cereal bowl

        • I did and he mentioned he uses his own TP-Link AX1500, And I wonder if it would work with Belong’s original modem.

          • @HeyJes: hmm he said in the mean time, so could be after the churn, also that tp link is router only so he must be (still) using old belong as modem then this new router, in bridge mode. (same like me now)

            well only him can confirm..
