I did own a car and still own another car that had this recall and I do recall joining in the class action,
But with all these modern scams now awaydays I'm so hesitant that this is another scam.

The website I did register on seemed to be "https://www.takataclassaction.com.au/" now it is down
This email points me to "https://www.airbagclassaction.com/"

Should I give them my bank details?

Call the lawyers and ask them if it's the right email address.

  • "But did you dieeee?"

  • +3

Googling the exact email address shows a whirlpool post about it from last year. Might want to have a read.

Assume its a scam until you have solid information.

    • so, the lawyers have made the most money out of this whole saga …

      • +2

        What a surprise.

      • +1

By participating in a class action, you're discouraging future manufacturers from sweeping it under the rug, or putting less money into R&D.

Yes, I agree the lawyers are the winners overall though

  • I'm not sure but I think it's scamy. The end date, no contact details for speaking to someone, why would they even need your bank account details if the class action is pending? But then it's very well written. Call them. For all you know, your original registration was on a dodgy website that's redirected you to another dodgy site and fake lawyers etc. Or maybe I'm just too suss.

  • Google Quinn Emanuel Lawyers Damian Scattini and you get enough positive results to show that part is genuine.
However, I think I would pass up on the offer. What if the class action fails? Who cops the costs?
    The lawyers? Unlikely.

    • Going by the email the case has already settled? They need my bank details to pay my share or scam me lol

  • Pretty sure it's a scam. Here's my 2 cents:

If you look at the WHOIS records for that domain, you'll see they're using a WHOIS Privacy service called "PERFECT PRIVACY, LLC" to hide their details.

If it was legit, then wouldn't "Quinn Emanuel Lawyers" just use their business details for the domain registration, instead of hiding it?

  • I just called Quinn Emanuel Lawyers, Sydney branch. They said it is legit

    • How much are you getting?

      • Still reluctant to give my bank info lol

        • -1

There's no risk to you in doing so.

          • @[Deactivated]: I had friends and family thats got scammed by giving the bank info out from all these spam calls and fake sms and emails

            • @vince088: How can you get scammed by providing those details? They can only be used to send you money.

        • +1

          Just ask for a cheque….. ?

  • +1

Aren't the payouts from class actions this size notoriously small? I wouldn't be handing over that much info for what would likely end up being under $10.
Besides, I bought the car with the recall used, and sold it after getting the airbag swapped, so I wonder what proof would even be required that I owned the car.

  • Unless you have been injured from a faulty airbag why would you be entitled to compensation?

    • The hassle of getting it done, often having to take the car in, taking time off work etc
I was part of this claim and they are asking for rego details before and after 2018 and insurance details before and after 2018 on top of other requests. Don't know if it's worth the time and energy

      • So how does this differ from any other faulty item (e.g TV) that you may have purchased and had to return to have fixed?
Ambulance chasers is the term for these type of legal firms.

        • Most of the time you can go before and after work to drop off the item and pick it up again.
They needed the car for the whole day

  • +3

Open a new bank account with nothing in it and give them those details
If they try pull money out they'll get nothing anyway

    • Was going to say the same thing

It’s easy to open a new account and if there is minimal balance whats the risk?

  • Couldn't this be verified with the a simple phone call the the lawyers offices?

  • I got asked different set of documents. Have you supplied these to them?

After reviewing your registration, the Administrator has determined that it requires documentation from you to verify your claim.

So the Administrator can confirm that:

your vehicle is the subject of the Takata Airbag Class Action; and/or
you held a valid Interest in that vehicle at all relevant times,
Please provide evidence that you own(ed), lease(ed) (or had an interest in) the vehicle that your claim relates to, and that you did not sell or otherwise dispose of your vehicle before 27 February 2018. Sufficient documentation can include, for example:

    • I only logged in my unique ID and PIN and stopped at the part asking for Bank details :(

    • ok I remembered I had a bank account with a few dollar in there so the bank wouldn't close it.
I used that bank info instead so the most I'd lose is a few dollars.

      email I got after:

Thank you. Your banking information has been successfully submitted. Your Confirmation Code is: XXXXXXX. Please keep this code for your records.

      Sincerely,
      Settlement Administrator

      • Do you know how much you’re getting?
I know someone who was involved with a large international class action sometime back and from memory they got something like $37 or $47.

        • absolutely no idea

  • Looks like we're getting $846.55, by the end of next month (September 2023) https://www.airbagclassaction.com/

    • Wow thats not bad

    • I wonder what day.

  • +1

Has anybody received their payment yet?

    • +1

      Still waiting

      • Hey @vince088, have your received yours yet? I'm still waiting for mine. Website says they started all the payments on 5th Oct and to allow 3-4 biz days. So just wondering if there's anyone else who's still waiting. Pretty sure I gave them the correct bank account details.

        • yeh got mine, on posted below

    • Holidays guess caused delays
      Waiting Hoping

      • +1

        Emailed them to ask

        • +1

@JonSteele, did they end up replying to your email? I sent them an email more than a week ago, but haven't had a reply from them yet.

          • @jayve: No, but website updated. They had a data glitch half way threw asked you to update your details apparently not everyone did that.

I also had to change my email due to optus hack, they replied to that.

            • +1

@JonSteele: Thanks for the reply @JonSteele, and letting me know about the web glitch. I think's that's what's happened, as I never got any comms about that and never entered any bank details into a web portal.
I received an email from them just now, and they said they attempted payment, but it was unsuccessful. So I have to wait until they send out their unsuccessful payment notice, for instructions on updating bank details.

Just go read main site if you're confused and concerned.

  • Got mine too, had forgotten all about it, nice surprise!
