Bang for Buck 40" in TV for Home Office

Hi all,

I WFH Full Time and have a 40" TV mounted in the corner of the room for watching TV (mainly morning + afternoons for the News) and streaming with Chromecast connected (like the V8 Supercars on some Fridays).

Well, the 40" Soniq I have appears to have died. Won't power on even though the little red LED is showing Power is connected. It seems to be a common problem with Soniqs.

So, time for a new one. What is the best bang for buck but relatively cheap TV? It doesn't need to be 4K or necessarily have Android TV, just needs HD TV (which most TVs have anyway) and an HDMI port.

Thoughts? Feedback?

  • JB has a 40" Hisense for $400 which I just bought for my Grandma; I decided to go for a "brand name" over the no namers; as they usually are always slow and clunky.

Also the Hisense has a 3 year warranty

  • Aldi have had a few this year and some stores have one or two left overs. Worth a try as you can return the TV if you do not like it within 60 days, which you cannot at other stores.

If you want a cheap TV check out Bigw and AusPost (check out their catalog for TV's).

Found https://auspost.com.au/shop/product/blaupunkt-40-fhd-led-tv-… which doesn't look too bad. Only $30 cheaper compared to other Big W models.

Yeah, but sometimes its the bigger ones like the 65s that are left over.

I'd just grab a cheapy off someone on FB marketplace.

    • I'd rather by new. Happy to spend a bit extra to get a new one rather than 2nd hand.

      • Fair enough I just think it's a bit wasteful for a screen that's just going to be used as you've described above. You can get a more reliable brand for cheaper off marketplace and it's better for the environment. I'd much rather a used 1080p Sony screen than a budget brand 4k set.

Make sure it is actually dead first. Have you tried using the buttons on the TV to turn it on? Remote battery could be dead/not charged.

    • Yep, already done that. The remote works fine as I have two other Soniqs and the remote works fine on them.

It was fine on Saturday, Sunday morning nothing. I disconnected everything (HDMI and TV antenna) and left it without power all day on Sunday. Nothing Sunday night. Left it disconnected overnight again and nothing this morning, tried multiple button sequences that were online to try and do a "reset" and nothing.

used Sony TV for $100 from gumtree/fb marketplace if you just need full HD
my main TV is a 32" Sony IPS FHD KDL-32EX650 which I got for $70 from gumtree, picture quality is great though.

  • Ended up buying one of these from BigW. Down from $449 to $299.
