How is this compared to fresh Salmon

    • +20

      A lot colder and harder.

But seriously, I find fresh salmon to be too fatty, this doesn't seem to have the same fattyness.

    • +11

Norwegian salmon packed in Poland… There are lots of YouTube/articles about Norwegian salmon farms though.

I actually had this for dinner tonight, not as good as fresh but far more handy to have as frozen portions

      • +1

Norwegian Salmon farm sounds like a euphemism, but colour me intrigued

        • +6

          they live in poo

          • +7

@jonathan111: have you read about the sh*te the salmon are fed in the Tasmanian Samon Farms?…yucko!!

      • Is it Atlantic salmon?

        • Yes as stated on the packaging.

    • +1

I baked 1 kg tonight for the first time, nothing like fresh. Yes it isn't as fatty

    • You already know

    • They are pretty good, hard to tell the difference. The only thing i dont like is how much plastic they come wrapped in

I compared this one, frozen to fresh, cooked both on pan. The dog got the frozen.

    • +4

How much do you love your dog though

      • +4

As he said, the dog got the forzen. 😁

        • +1

a truly dog lover feeds his dog the fresh one

        • +17

I think they froze the dog

      • +1

I actually bought 4 bags of this stuff, and having compared with the fresh, the dog got all 4 bags. I love them 5/10, usually opt for liver, hearts, chicken feet at 5.50kg

        • +7

Probably not a great idea to feed bags to your pets.
          I'll see myself out :-)

Someone told Me that seafood is really good to make your dogs gone baldy .

      • +6

Somebody told me that you have a boyfriend who looked like a girlfriend.

        • +3

          I will check

        • +1

It's not confidential. I've got potential.

    • You must seriously struggle to cook

  • +2

The 8 pieces come in very odd shapes and sizes.

  • +4

Fresh salmon tastes better, this one is… Very odd in terms of texture. Can't put my finger to it but there's something not right about it

    • +1

      It’s all farmed fish though

    • +6

I got this 6 months ago all fillets were white, cause of lice and bacterial infection, it makes them blind and white. It was very off putting could not eat it again since.

Came here to post this video to make sure Aussies know what they're eating. Total crap, I've never bought these after they were posted on here and I learnt about them.

      • Thanks for sharing, thats eye opening indeed

  • I tried the Mediterranean style. It was bland and the fish didn't smell good.

    • I found it salty and not great

  • Can you use that for sashimi?

    • +2

you can, but taste will be pretty off…

      • +1

Okay… So just go to seafood shop?

        • +2

Go wherever you can find sushi grade salmon. Not using the right salmon product for sashimi can lead to parasites, etc.

    • +1

      No

    • You only want to use very fresh for sashimi so no this isn't for that.

  • I find these taste pretty fishy, wouldn't recommend

    • God forbid fish would taste like fish

  • +2

Woolworths Online substituted 800g of frozen Huon Salmon with 2kg of this stuff… it was a real chore to work my way through it. It’s like the fillet loses its integrity when it thaws and the protein is mushy. They’re a weird artificial colour too (from the food pallets the fish are fed). Weird shapes and thickness too making it hard to cook consistently.

    • Cheers for the tip to refuse substitution

  • Do you guys pan fry it frozen or do you thaw it in microwave first

    • +2

Would recommend thawing it then pan fry.

    • +1

Air fryer or oven from frozen

    • Thaw, like all fish. Not in the microwave though. Pieces oddly shaped and thinner and smaller than when you buy in the deli. But it's convenient, available when there aren't many delis around you and a more practical size than the giant fillets at the deli imo.

    • -1

thaw overnight in fridge. Microwave is just going to cook it and you'll end up with overcooked salmon

    • Thaw it in luke warm water while in the plastic wrap, takes about two minutes

  • can we cook these via sous vide?

    • +1

      Everything can be pal
Youd rathrr some seasining or pil bet

  • +2

    Another option…

    Coles…in this week catalogue
    Frozen… KBs skin off salmon
    1kg = $24

    • It is an everyday same price item.

  • Glad to see others shared their warnings. For me it's fresh from Tasmania any day over this…

    • but watch this and find out what you are eating from Tasmania…its enuff to make you sick!

      • +1

I didn't watch, but I can imagine. The day to day comfort of store-bought items beats the old days of having to catch your own, but it comes at a price.

Mi sun luvz samn whc 1 wd be da bst 2 by

  • Just had it last night, fresh salmon much better. But possibly get a fresh on cut and unbone at this price?

  • +9

People are focusing on fresh vs frozen when they should probably be focusing on farmed vs wild-caught… being fed low quality crap feeds, antibiotics, chemicals isn't exactly good for the quality of the meat, nutrition (lowers the omega-3 content while raising the omega-6 we all get too much of), taste, the health benefits that can arise from eating good fish etc.

    • +1

Aren't those aims contradictory as all fresh Australian salmon is farmed.and Alaskan/Atlantic salmon is wild caught but is flash frozen.

    • +1

Mate, if you’ve got a lead on where to source wild caught salmon, I’d love to hear it!

      • Seems like grizzlys know best

  • +1

Thanks OP. Fresh salmon is nicer but this is tasty too.

  • Is there any real fresh salmon in the supermarkets though? I thought all the salmons would be frozen on the boat right after being harvested? If so wouldn’t the frozen ones are actually fresher because they have been frozen from the beginning, not thawed half way?

I had always bought the fresh ones, but then someone, probably right on OzBargain in another thread, said that we better buy the frozen ones because they are actually fresher, particularly if you plan to put part of it straight to the freezer.

For taste I couldn’t see much difference between the two. Both are obviously couldn’t compare with the sashimi grade ones in the Japanese restaurants.

    • Almost all salmon you buy is farmed, no point processing it on the boat, much cheaper to do it on land, a few km from the farm.
Also no reason to freeze it for consumption in Australia, we have plenty of refrigerated trucks to get it to where it needs to go before it spoils.

      • Thanks, good to know. I may have to buy some fresh salmon again to compare.

    • I trust Norwegians more than Tassies and Aussies in general. In the end it is commercial grade food, and likely it is the best of the worst.

      • Underarmer sandpapered drugged up pedos are hard to trust

  • +6

The Aldi Tasmanian salmon taste much better! Don't bother with this Norwegian salmon, it does not taste good….

    • +2

I agree. We regularly buy Aldi’s - much better than Coles.

    • Do you mean frozen or fresh Tasmanian salmon at Aldi? I’ve never bought any seafood from Aldi, but will give it a try soon.

      • +1

        The frozen one

      • Fresh, the one that comes in blue sealed packs which last about one week. Once you buy you should cook on the same day for the best taste!

  • Coles frozen skin on salmon is better

  • Hope we can see some promos on the shrimps :)

  • I like those little blue 100-150gram packs , vac sealed at Colesworth .
Tassie salmon, good when they would be on special for 79c.
( Back in the day , a year ago )
Still have some in the freezer.
    Special occasion stuff.
You can feel the goodness after eats , yum yum yum .

    • Are you talking about smoked salmon?

    • How / when are they ever on special for 79c?
      Normal price is like $7-$8

  • You get what you pay for. Offcuts. I bought this once. Only .. 🤨 .. !!

  • I think pretty much all the frozen fish are farmed. Where could you buy fresh wild caught fish? In the markets do they still sell farmed?

  • Thought this a good deal until I read comments about this on net. Won't be buying this.

  • +1

Good to throw in a stew and that's about it.

  • Does anyone know if sashimi grade salmon is sold at any supermarkets or Costco, or we can only buy them at the markets?

  • These are OK if cooked carefully. I get good results wrapping in foil with lemon and butter then about 7 minutes in the airfryer lower shelf so effectively they are steamed.
Skin comes off before hand and goes on top shelf with chips for about 12 minutes. Crispy delicious chips and salmon skin and moist delicate salmon fillet. Never fails to impress!

I came here for the woke comments and not disappointed at all 💓💓

    • You got me; I don’t like to eat animals that ingest their own faeces - I’m as “woke” as they come!

  • Reading these comments I think some people just struggle to cook for s***. I have never had a bad result cooking these before pan fried.

  • FYI my store ran out and sub the below instead
