Ooh, played it through already but highly recommend the danganronpa series. Good fun!

      • I've only played the first one and really enjoyed it, but yeah excited to dive into the others!

You're in for a treat. Somehow it manages to step it up every time.

      • Is the whole thing basically just VN but without the hentai? Like, there's no actual gameplay except clicking on stuff to advance the story?

        • If I was trying to be mean but succinct, they're basically a VN with minimal gameplay elements. A good comparison would be the Phoenix Wright / Ace Attorney games if you've ever payed them, but with more bizarre / fantastical elements and turned up to 11.

Essentially the game is divided into a few sections. Story sections which set up for somebody being murdered, a free exploration section where you gather evidence (can't proceed until you click on all the evidence), then a trial where the murderer is exposed. There are a variety of minigames within the trial, but it's all very "on the rails", there's no real free choice, which can be frustrating if the murderer is obvious (usually not though). Eg a character might muse that the victim was murdered with a club, and you'll correct them that it was in fact a knife (usually more convoluted). There's also a rather pointless freeform section you essentially go on "dates" (platonic or otherwise PG rated) with characters and they throw random personal history at you which you don't really care about.

That said, the actual game is very enjoyable, and far more than the sum of its parts. The twists within the case are generally quite good and the murders are pleasingly convoluted, and each game has a stupidly large twist which is so bizarre there's no possible way to guess it.

Essentially, Danganronpa is a game you turn your brain off for, enjoy the ride, and have a great time.

No one mentions Metal Hellsinger? That game just released on Steam yesterday and it’s whooping $40+, so glad I didn’t spend that money on Steam and found it today on Game Pass!
