They've reduced the Google Pixel 6 Pro down to $999, I thought I'd take advantage of the Zip promotion, spend $1000 to get $100 cash back so effectively $900.
Make sure to add a $1 item to take advantage of the Zip promotion.

I'm trying to decide between the 7 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra. Thoughts on what I should pick of the two?
i dont like samsung…. dont ask me which one to pick. also 7 pro isnt out so im not sure what it will have
wait for a review on the 7pro, whispers of a pixel 7 ultra too.
Personally i dislike Samsung however if the 7 Pro doesn't fix the problems the 6 has get the Galaxy.
How can you/anyone decide, 7 is not out yet.
Basically almost every pixel that has come out has had software issues, hardware issues or both. Plus the first Tensor didn't have great performance compared to the SD8G1 yet the phone commanded a premium price tag. The next Tensor chip will also be Samsung made based on the exynos chip, and will be a minimum hardware upgrade yet likely still have a high price tag…. which doesn't make sense to me.
@Trishool: So sounds like you've already made up your mind?
@John Kimble: Almost… The recent Galaxy S22 Ultra deals are really tempting me. I prefer stock Android but also appreciate quality hardware and software. Samsung seems to be ticking more boxes for me.
@Trishool: Samsung is definitely not as bloated as it used to be, and comes leaps and bounds but still doesn't quite provide as sleek an experience as stock android
@buckster: This! I recently upgraded from a long line of (OzBargain favourite) LG G-series flagships to an S22 Plus (for $750 with the latest JB trade-in deal) and quite to my surprise, I love the OS.
Previous versions I'd played with were bloated and poorly skinned, with unavoidable Samsung integration everywhere - a long way from LG's minimalist messing with the OS. The S22 is quite close to stock with some good tweaks and while there's still several areas were a Samsung Account requirement shows up it's all easily avoidable or the feature is replaceable. Bixby is easy to dodge and you can have the Google news pane to the left of the home screen (previous versions were locked on a Samsung news page). I'm very happy with the device, it preforms brilliantly with zero lag.
It's also a godsend to have updates (monthly!) after having the LG handsets for so long (not that this would be an issue with the Pixels) and the Samsung changelogs are full of specific details about fixes and changes.
@Trishool: Samsung stock android is probably better than pixel stock nowadays unfortunately :(
I feel dirty saying it but yea…
@quikstix: Agree. And Samsung has improved their track record for releasing updates as well.
@OZBsince2018: Totally agree, Samsung is simply great, has been for years. I dare say it's nearly flawless.
@Trishool: Pixel is not stock Android it's Pixel OS.
@Exec-Matrix: It's not pixel os… They haven't given it a name but yes it's not as pure as AOSP or android one which is probably is the most raw that comes stock on a phone. No flagship(or relevent flagship) comes with anything pure
@Trishool: same cameras, same chip. same same but different (higher) price. remains to be seen though.
I've been looking at options a lot lately, and feature wise the s22 ticks every box for me. My only dislike with Samsung is the UI.
Not sure what differs on the ultra, but I've seen articles talking about heat issues when playing games on the ultra.
I much prefer googles version of Android, so if the 7p offers equal performance to the sd 8 gen1, has as good battery/build/etc I would go for that, but the 6p didn't really deliver soo..
Can't you use a different launcher then? I use nova on my Note 10 Plus
@John Kimble: Yes but there are still baked in Samsung apps that I would prefer not to have (their file manager, the Samsung store, bixby button, etc)
I've tried remapping the bixby button to trigger Google assistant but it's too slow and annoying, also Samsung devices I've had up till now have had pretty bad recognition of the "hey Google" phrase.
I used to root my phones to remove all that stuff but I just CBF anymore, I would prefer the Google app suite out of the box.
As someone who has used both the S22 Ultra and Pixel 6 Pro, I can say that the pixel has some nice features, but Samsung smashes it in the UI department. They have put a lot more thought into things that make the phone easier to use.
That said, should Google improve on QA with hardware as well as software bugs, I can see the Pixel 7 giving Samsung trouble. While the S22 Ultra is the most well-rounded android phone, its cameras are still pretty unexciting and I've seen better features in other phones. There is high potential, but I doubt Google will fulfil it.
There is high potential, but I doubt google will fulfil it.
And that right there is my problem with Google and their pixel line. They're so uninnovative, especially when compared to Apple and other companies. They keep playing it safe so much, and keep focusing on their cameras too much without really thinking about much else. Their innovations, when they have them, are half baked so they give up on them completely after one iteration. They are the kings of cancel and move on.
@Trishool: To be fair, Google is a software company - first and foremost. Smartphones can be a good idea for a company as big as Google because all they can do is improve their marketshare in the mobile space, and make a bit of money here and there.
But for as long as their phones are not competing at the top end, they won't innovate much. It's matter of dollars and cents, but investing billions into RnA/MnA for an amazing new technology is not worth it unless their presence in the market it big enough. Google does well enough by its name alone in selling phones, they don't care to innovate much.
@Senate 69: Google is a software company - first and foremost
For a software company, they produce very buggy software. Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owner here. Their software is usable, but buggy on initial release that mostly gets fixed 6-8 months later. That's when I bought my Pixels. I don't have any of the issues now that people have lived with since the initial release.
@vrsac: My Pixel 6 pro is still shitty on reception even after all their fixes… Can't fix bad hardware. Plus there is stuff you can't customise on the pixel and also the os is still buggy even now. Actually going out to buy an iphone 14 pro or pro max soon and the pixel 6 pro is going in the drawer. Saying that as a long term Android user…
For a software company, they produce very buggy software.
That is how software is done these days, it's called the Agile Methodology. You release a half-baked product, then fix it as you go at the expense of your users.
@1st-Amendment: I mean, kinda? Agile methodology for software is predicated on iterative cycles but it doesn't inherently mean a bad product. It's just an excuse to release products in the midst of an iteration cycle INSTEAD of in a review cycle.
@Senate 69: I'd argue they are a pure data hoarding company over anything else.
Pixel!
It's an awesome device.
IPhone 14 Pro
I'll be going back to Samsung once my 6 is a bit older because Google was generous enough to kill/nerf their own splitscreen feature which I used just about everytime I would use my phone.
😲 Split screen is gone on the Pixel? That's a show stopper for me. Samsung it is.
@Trishool: Not gone entirely, it lives on in a bastardised form called "Split Top". Basically instead of splitting your phone into two fully functioning halves, you instead choose app pairs. Say if you have YouTube on top, and Chrome on the bottom, you can't just go home on the bottom half then open Reddit instead, you'd have to close the app pair, then open a new app pair with YouTube and Reddit. It is unbelieveably stupid.
@matictac: Huh? So this doesn't work anymore? This is how to do it on my Note 10 Plus also.
Oh I see…you can't swap out apps easily?
@John Kimble: Just took a quick video showing how it works, sorry for shitty webcam quality. It's still USEABLE, but it's worse in many ways, and I almost exclusively used splitscreen to have a YouTube video going while I used my phone normally, and it's made that a lot harder to do.
@matictac: Thanks mate, that was a really useful video. Split screen isnt that bad, but I get what you mean about the apps being locked in and then having to unsplit them if you want one of those apps to be split with another app instead. Not a deal breaker for me though.
They're both Samsung phones.
Tensor is just a re-badged Exynos chip with some minor hacks for AI gimmicks.
If the Tensor 2 chip sorts out their sub-par battery performance the pick would be the pixel.
I'm trying to decide between the 7 Pro or the Samsung Galaxy 22 Ultra. Thoughts on what I should pick of the two?
If you're used to stock Android or near stock implementations….avoid Samsung. If you hate the travesty that is Bixby….avoid Samsung. If you hate the Samsung apps you cannot remove….avoid Samsung. Otherwise whatever. For me, the only thing worse than using iOS…is using a Samsung phone. But that's just personal preference :)
Is it coming that soon?
my little bird told me early oct
Cool, i've got the pixel 6 and had zero issues so far with it. But i think i'll upgrade if i can offload it for around $500 or so.
Announcement is October 6th, leaks pointing to pre-orders shipping two weeks after that. Few telco mates have heard itll be available in stores mid October.
Hold your dragons 8 is coming next year
Better still, wait for another year or two, and you can buy a 9
Hodl till the pixel 69 is out.
@SS625 I don't own any horses. Any OzB link for horse deals?
Dead or alive?
Doesn't matter as long as I can hold them until Pixel 7
@dealsforlife: Dead might be easier to hold still then
hold your horses, 7 is coming out in 2 weeks
If Google releases 7 pro for 899 USD, it might be around 1500 AUD.
Yes ,but I think Google may want more. I think 7 will start 1200 and 7 pro will start 1400.
super buggy phone, has reception issues and bugs with calling emergency services
I have hated mine. Sold it after a few weeks
why?
The fingerprint sensor was really annoying with the hit-and-miss, basically to big to type in the code with one hand and the fingerprint too often doesn't work. Battery life was not that great either under heavy use.
Google Pixel 6 and 6 Pro owner here.
Later hardware revisions had zero issues. Bought my phones three months ago.
@vrsac: Likewise, upgraded from my 4XL
Is it illegal to like it?
@vrsac: Unfortunately, i got mine pretty much straight after release.
Later hardware revisions had zero issues.
I bought a 6a on release 2 months ago and the finger print reader sucked. The thing is, I don't think it's a fault, it's the nature of the in-screen reader that it takes longer than a rear sensor since it has to adjust the screen brightness before it can take a reading. That 1/2 second delay every time you use your phone makes for a worse experience. The rear sensor are a far better design.
i like the 6 more
I haven't tried the 6 so can't say much about it.I have had the 6a though and i liked it better than the pro
Android 13 +recent carrier services updates have turned the P6 Pro into a fine device.
And the cameras are stunning, especially low light still and video.
All reviews of the 6 Pro generally said video was still lacking quality in comparison to the Galaxy 22 range and iPhone 13. Would you say that video quality has improved with Android 13 and other recent software updates?
Video is very hard for mobile cameras - not much room for stabilisation and processing is hard on a small sensor. iPhone and Xiaomi are well ahead of the pack, Samsung and Google have a lot of room to improve. Which is a good thing, because the other two are far from perfect.
If Apple can make great video, there's no reason why Samsung and Google cant either. They either don't care about it enough, or not focusing on it enough. Either way, its a battle that iPhone has been king of for ages, and being good at still photos only is no longer the only important thing, given how many people are also creating YT videos with their phones to start off with. There's simply no excuse for Google or Samsung to drag their heels on improving video quality, especially if they're expecting consumers to pay iPhone prices for their devices.
If Apple can make great video, there's no reason why Samsung and Google cant either
The iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB is $1,899.
There's simply no excuse for Google or Samsung to drag their heels on improving video quality.
The $900 price difference is a pretty good excuse.
given how many people are also creating YT videos
I would wager that the lower price point is a more valuable marketing tool that being able to make HQ YT content.
The iPhone 14 Pro Max 128GB is $1,899.
The $900 price difference is a pretty good excuse.
For the majority of customers, the S22 Ultra is basically in the same ballpark price. The price has dipped a little since launch and since new competitor devices are or will be launched at this time. So this reasoning doesnt really stand.
@Trishool: I guess $999 is basically in the same ballpark as $1,549.00.
Just $552 or 55% more is nothing, inconsequential, immaterial, negligible, nugatory…..
@happydude: Ummmm….I was comparing the S22 Ultra to the iPhone 14…not the Pixel. Please read.
@Trishool: Apple has the fastest CPU. so they can do much more especially with video.
I was disappointed with the camera performance when compared to mi note 10 pro with 108mp sensor. On paper and by online reviews these were rated so high I didn't like any of the actual photos it clicked.
Just bought the 512gb here at the same price that Google store has for 128gb
Ooo. That seems more palatable. I'm coming from a 256GB phone and the same config with an idevice (similar screen size to what I have now) is a cool 2100 beans.
Not that I'm upgrading anytime soon.
Pixel the great
Dammit. I literally ordered the Pixel 6 from Google yesterday for the same price. Oh well.
Very easy to return with Google's change of mind 30 day return policy.
They should bring back unlimited photo upload from pixels. Or at least put a limit of 2TB
Will never get a pixel phone again personally. The camera is great but the phone itself is so buggy and sluggish just after a year of use.
My first one (XL 2) died in 2 years because of an unresponsive screen and now my current one (XL 4) has got a dead camera also within 2 years.
Just sharing my own experience that's all.
That's fair. The 3a XL was a winner, but you're right, build quality and QC is pretty sucky, given the price they ask for
Still rocking 2xl from April'18. Hoping to upgrade next yr..
Me too! Damn thing wont die and photos are still great. What are you going to upgrade to?
May be p7 next yr if good deals come thru else will keep using this until it dies..
My 3XL is still going strong and never had any issues. Battery has dropped only 10% since new 3 years ago while charging from around 30% back to 100% every night. It appears QC is the problem with Pixel devices so luck of the draw for the buyer.
I'm ready for an upgrade but too many consistently reported issues with the 6 series so waiting patiently to see what the 7 is like.
This phone is a disaster. I had it for 2 months and returned it to Google.
Constant drop outs. The S22 Ultra 5 Gangsta Alpha Omega Supreme is a better buy.
love the pixel pro 6
I love google devices, but hate the hardware support.
Having to ship to Hong Kong for a repair is not good enough.
Have been using oppo phones that have a repair centre in Melbourne, and had a screen replaced for $60 by the factory.
You obviously didn't buy it in Australia.
Google phones purchased in Australia from Google can be returned for free. Google normally sends refurbished phones with free shipping.
I bought it at a Telstra shop,
They paid for shipping, but they wouldn't send a replacement until they had received it in Hong Kong.
So I was without a phone for a month.
You didn't have a back up phone? Kind of unheard of these days.
@Trishool: It's actually super common for a lot of people with Lease/Trade in plans being pushed hard for the last few phone cycles. A lot of people since the iPhone X days dont hang onto old phones or have the old drawer of spares anymore unless they're a nerd like me haha. Telco's still dont want to, or have any obligation to give you a spare either.
@Shak2093: I get that, but still a back up phone just makes sense. How easy is it to lose your phone or have it stolen.
Been very frustrated with my p6pro. Little software issues and the major issue with network dropouts requiring me to go-to airplane mode and back or the thing doesn't reconnect itself for ages.. as in 10mins plus.
Little annoying things like Bluetooth playing music automatically and stock android not showing wtf is playing the music or how to turn it off.. example. I used the feature where the alarm reads news podcasts… Turned it off. Got up, got ready for work. Jumped in the car and tidal started playing music, then assistant started playing the news podcast that I'd stopped.. over the top of the music lol.. could not work out how to shut the podcast up and had to reboot!
Next phone won't be a pixel at this stage, premium price but no the experience sadly.
My Strat for Pixel Device.
Currently rocking P2 XL so major upg for me.
If you guys have any feedback that would be helpful I'm open to it.
U lost me completely after point 3…what are you trying to achieve?
lol.. I'll expand.
JB wont take a return if its been opened, thus if you want to return pp6 for any reason it must be kept sealed.
After pp7 will be announced pp6 will drop in price more and I can get a refund of the difference OR if jb offer a pre-order discount of new pp7 when you I might do that and return pp6.
Basically you lock in discounted price of pp6 now and wait to see if it drops more OR get pp7 if they have made some big upgrades / discounted pre-order deal.
Right… I nearly thought you mean something you could gain monetary benefit by refunding your purchase. Make sense tho
@overlook: Hahaha.. yeah nah, but if i could I wouldn't say no 😅
I have the pixel 6 pro and it is the most slippery bloody phone I've ever had in my life.
You absolutely need a case for it but that makes it a much larger phone.
This is so slippery in fact, that it slid out of my suit pant side pocket and onto the ground.
When I have the phone mounted in the car for Google maps use, it heats up quite a fair bit and on a drive from Brisbane to the Gold coast, it may sometimes need to be put in front of an air-conditioning vent to cool down.
I've also found that the fingerprint sensor only works about half the time. I have had the pixel 2xl, 4xl and now the 6pro. The 6 pro is the only phone where I've felt frustrated trying to unlock the phone. It's ridiculous.
This should be a great phone for the cost. The sound is excellent and the screen quality is nice. The camera is good but imo, the white balance is too cool and Samsung and iPhone give more pleasing photos. Stock android is nice, google integration is wonderful. But I have to say, I regret this purchase and would prefer to go Samsung or iPhone for my next phone.
My Nokia 9 Pureview took the cake for slipperiness. It would slide of tables that looked deadset flat. The tiniest of slopes would see it glaciering it's way along.
Well that's basically the pixel 6 pro.
hold your horses, 7 is coming out in 2 weeks
