Good evening fellow OzBargainers and Mods extraordinaire!
Could we find a way to increase transparency, using perhaps some small trickery to keep the collective safe (or safer)?
I have been keeping my eye on a few "deals" that were posted that entice people with gift cards or other freebies/offers. Some of us know that if something is free, you're usually the product that is being sold. For example https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/724441. I know it's a personal responsibility to read through a privacy policy. We've all been guilty of just scrolling/not reading.
Is there a way that OzB could assist its collective user base and become an even better consumer platform than it already is? Perhaps by highlighting this kind of "you're the product here"?
At a minimum, could we force associates, marketing reps, etc to link their privacy policy, terms of use, and other associated docs in the store profile? These could then be displayed under the deal, near the social buttons.
While will not stop people from handing over sensitive information, it will show reps that OzB takes privacy seriously, it isn't just an advertising portal and at the same time it serves as a reminder for the public that personal information should be taken more seriously.
Thoughts?
For someone quite concerned about privacy I, for one, am surprised you used your real name as your OzB user name
