Excess Cardboard & Styrofoam Placed Next to Bins The Night before Collection

Hi all,

I don't know which forum space to put this but here it is.

I'm curious what the online community thinks of placing excess cardboard & styrofoam outside, right next to red/yellow bins to be collected.

I've done some large ikea assembly and there's some excess that won't fit all of it in my bins.

Collection is in a couple days and won't bring the excess out until the morning of, and I work 9-5 so don't have lots of time before recycling centres close.

The foam will be in garbage bags next to red, and cardboard neatly flattened in a box next to yellow & both sets will be labelled with sticky note.

Can I do this as a tenant? What are council rules? Potential warnings/fines?

Thank you in advanced for your responses!

-Cal

What did your council say when you asked them??

    • I haven't asked just yet since it's 5.30pm but will ask tomorrow morning - was wondering if anyone has done this before?

      • +3

Just store it somewhere until the next collection. I expect that's what most people do.

        • +1

Thanks mate - majority are saying this so I'll be doing this cheers

  • Get someone to Take it to your local tip, they’ll have recycling there (least mine takes both)

Unfortunately this isn't an option as I live alone. If this forum responses point a certain way - is the next step to hire an entire skip bin for 1 large box and couple extra garbage bins? Cheers

      • +3

If you are really insistent on getting rid of the rubbish immediately, then instead of hiring a skip bin, consider getting someone from Airtasker to haul it away.

        • Good call - what price they charge for 1 car load of excess? Any tip fees?

        • Why the minus mate? Genuine questions

          • @Calzone: I didn't neg you. I just added a plus to even you out.

In regards to your question, I don't know the answer so didn't respond. But it would probably depend on who you choose as there are all sorts of people on Airtasker.

            • +1

              @RotundPolarBear: Thank you my friend

Was on Airtasker all night - people are offering around $50 min to take 2 bags and a box + $80 tipping fees. lol

      • +7

No, most people just break it up over a number of weeks normal garbage collection

Cardboard/recycling you can generally drop off for free, but if you don't have transport, then bit each week over a few weeks.

        • Thanks I'm getting a theme here and think this is the best way to go

      • Not worth hiring a skip

You telling me you can’t take less than an hour off work to take it to the tip? My local one opens at 7am, and is even open on weekends

        • Nah I'm just seeing if it's "okay" to do this as a once off since collection is early Friday morning

  • +2

Put them in your neighbour's bins like everyone else

    • +2

Both neighbours are full already and we still have 1.5/2 days. Also not sure about how I feel about putting my rubbish in a neighbour's bin

  • +4

Keep the rubbish and throw away a little at a time.

Shred into smaller bits to fit more in the bin.

Ask a neighbour to use their bin.

    • This is good advice, thank you!
Do you know if 1 extra box 2x bags next to bins will be taken on bin collection day?
Reckon the garbo guys will chuck a fuss and leave the excess on the curb?

      • +8

"Garbo guys" don't get out of their truck unless required. Picking up extra garbage sitting next to bins isn't one of those times…

        • Thanks mate, there's always 2 of them in my street - 1 to drive & 1 to align the bins to trucks

  • +11

Highly unlikely that the garbage man will get out of his truck to pick up the bags of rubbish. It will just end up sitting out there until you get back from work.

Better to break it down and slowly put the pieces in your bin each week/fortnight until gone. Will just take a while. But cheaper than paying for the tip.

    • On my collection there's always 2 guys - 1 to drive, and 1 to align the bins onto the truck. What do you think they'll do - just benefit of the doubt, once off goodwill kinda thing?

      • +3

Seeing as there are two guys, you could try leaving it out there and hope for the best. Worst case is you'll have to bring it back in when they inevitably leave it there. As long as you are not embarrassed to do that, it's worth a shot, I guess.

Your neighbours probably won't be too pleased if bags of trash are sitting out there for too long, though.

        • Yeah was initially leaning towards hoping for the best. Not worried about face.
If anything they'd put a warning or something if they left it?
Doubt I am to expect a fine for 1st offence? If anyone has experience with this, that'd be great!

  • +2

Call the council for a special pickup if they have one as the garbo collections will not pick it up.

    • Would you know if there's extra cost? If so how much?

      • Call the council

  • +2

Put it in your bin for next collection or spread it out. Buy a boxcutter if the boxes are big. I guarantee the only reason the driver would get out of the truck is to write a warning to not do it on a sticker on top of your bin.

  • +2

I cut the boxes and compact as much of the cardboard as I can into the yellow bin.

You'd be surprised how much you can fit in the bins when cut to fit nicely.

I will ask neighbours if I can use their spare space with CLEAN cardboard or styro.

    Otherwise wait until next fortnight.

    • Thanks I've already done that and yellow bin is tetris filled with cardboard - now have excess left

  • +5

Maybe head back to Ikea, it "seems" they'll recycle it:

IKEA runs its own recycling service where customers can drop-off their used cardboard, batteries and globes at recycling stations near the stores exit.
    https://www.insidewaste.com.au/index.php/2019/02/20/bunnings….

    Unwrap and take it back
Don’t fill your bins with IKEA cardboard and plastic, take it back to the store! IKEA accept most of their packaging and materials back, so unwrap your purchases before making the return journey. Especially if you have small bins or live in an apartment building, bringing your rubbish back for recycling will save a lot of pain.

    • Oooh this is interesting! I'll give this a go on the weekend with a small box and styrofoam :) I want to test how much they can accept

      • +1

You'd assume they'd be happy to take ALL their packaging you have, it would be a bit rude if they only let you recycle half the garbage their products were packed in, lol

It's odd I cant find it mentioned on their website though, maybe shoot them an email or call them first…

        • "No we can't accept your ikea branded plastic" lol
Yeah I heard they're trying to be full solar by 2033 and focusing on environmental stuff too
Maybe it's one of those "trade secrets" haha
I'll try with small box/styro, since I have to go back on the weekend anyway

  • Have you tried to stand inside the bin to make room? be careful though, make sure the ground where the bin is level.

    • The boxes are vertically stacked neatly tetris style in yellow bin. There's 1 medium box of excess, also filled with vertically stacked cardboard in them.
As for the styro there's 2 black garbage bags of excess - not sure how much space will be freed up by standing on top of bins hahaha

      • ok. you can also go to recycling centre the likes - one in my area is free for cardboards.

Anyway if it's not too much trouble, going to Ikea is good idea too for recycling those materials - as some suggest above.

        • Thank you. Do you have personal experience with recycling at Ikea and how they work?
I assume they won't take cardboard that's not Ikea branded? Cheers

          • @Calzone: They have a large bin outside - near the exit - thus you don't deal/face with the staff at all - it won't make any difference if you dump your other cardboards there.

Our local council does not allow Styrofoam packing to be placed in the recycle bin, it must be taken to their recycling depot.

    • The styrofoam are packed in garbage bags, next to red bin. I've never stated that they were to be recycled, thanks

      • So who do you expect to collect the bags of styrofoam - the tooth fairy?

        • Duh! It’s the FOAM fairy.

        • Again, I never said styrofoam was to be recycled. It's excess in 2 bags, and was intending to place it next to red bins.

Majority are saying break it down into bits, so I'll be doing that instead.

You think the recycling truck takes garbage, and garbage truck takes recycling? Of course styrofoam for the garbage truck… No need for the smart comment.

The whole point of this thread was to see if anyone's got experience with council collecting excess.

Recyclesmart offer a service in many council areas in Sydney where they collect items that can be recycled - such as Styrofoam. In my council area they charge just $2 per bag of "rubbish" (e.g. soft plastics, e-waste or styrofoam etc) - this is the fee for them to come and collect it from your doorstep and take it to be recycled.

Note that they offer different services depending on your council area.

      Nice find thank you!

  • Burn the cardboard

    • Definitely something Sauron from LOTR would say hahaha

      • fire good

  • +1

I suspect the council may not pick up anything not in a bin. Leave it out and you are also littering.

Just break it up and put it the bin a few weeks in a row or share it with neighbours.

    • Thank you, was just seeing anyway had personal experience with excess collection.

I'll be doing that, breaking it down in bits.

  • If you know what time the rubbish truck comes you can just wait outside and give it to the workers there when they drive around to your bin on bin day. I did it once unintentionally because I was cleaning my cardboard and so happened I made it just in time to meet the workers and the bins were already full

    • Roughly somewhere around 4 or 5am, but I'll still be in the clouds.

Did they say anything or look at you a certain way when you passed it onto them?

  • +1

Just leave a 6pack on top of the bin i'm sure they will take it

    • Chances of them taking the 6 pack and leaving the excess there - 87% hahaha

  • -1

Seriously, walk around the block find some other bins and chuck them in there.

    • No worries I'll walk around and chuck it in your bin then - so when you have 1 final bag in the morning and can't fit it, you'll have to wait for next collection

    • Didn't neg you btw so somebody else thinks that's not very nice either
