Finding a Traditional Rubber Backed Picnic Rug

For years I have had in the boot of the SUV a picnic rug, upside down (rubber side up), it:
- has protected the back and sides of the boot from damage as it slides up the back and side walls
- has completely stopped large objects from moving
- can be brought forward to stop scratching the bumper when loading large loads
- stopped numerous water and chemical spills
- been used in place of an umbrella
- even been used as a picnic rug (once)!

This is a proper rubber-back picnic rug see https://imgur.com/a/hPdYTJO not a PEVA or nylon semi-waterproof job.

I want a new one. I have searched high and low, and not found anything like what I have. I feel they may not be made like this anymore…..

  • Can’t tell exactly what the backing is, but:

  • Clark rubber, maybe use seperate cloth or attach together

    • I think I actually had one of these for my kids at some stage.

Actually the closest match so far!

    • The look of that rubber is very close to mine. I think it is a match. A bit expensive, but I will check it out next time I am in Sydney.

Non vulcanised rubber won't last long in a car. Vulcanised rubber would be too hard.. Synthetic rubber like compounds feel rubbery and will stop slip. Try something like this with a PEVA backing. https://www.kmart.com.au/product/picnic-rug-large-42898115/

I have had one in my boot for years.

  • Thanks. I had a cheap one, that firstly wasn't waterproof, and fell apart. I assumed it was PEVA, but I could be wrong. For $12, I will give it another shot.
The one I have in the back of the car has been there for 5+ years and suffered all manner of abuse, so now I am wondering about the type of rubber it is.
