  • Yeah, Costco @ Casula always seems to have a healthy stock of these.

Plenty of stock at Epping VIC as well

  • +6

2 years on and getting a console at RRP is still considered a deal.

    Manufacturers are loving this.

    • +23

It's actually lower than RRP but not by much.

    • +1

If my calculations are correct this is 1.8% off RRP. It's not hard to find gift cards at 2%+ off RRP.

Presuming there's still stock issues though which stops everyone just getting one at a place you can easily get 10-15% off gift cards.

      • Correct, plenty of stock at JB hi-fi and with the recent 10% off gc should be better than OP (even better if one need to factor in the membership fee)

They sell hardware at a loss and with chip prices increasing massively over the past 18 months, probably bigger losses than they initially expected. Sony upped the price of the PS5 to compensate for increased costs in manufacturing.

      • +1

Yeah always the "our costs have increased" excuse, it is never they wanna maximixe their profits, right?
And what about the customers? Didnt their expenses increase as well?

        • Can't that be one and the same?

I mean if their costs increase their profits decrease, so they increase the prices of the items they sell to hopefully increase their income, leading to greater profits. We know costs have increased, that isn't news to anyone paying attention to technology recently and companies feel the pinch like we do. They have the option to increase prices of the items they sell and we have the option to purchase at that price or not.

      • +1

Yes, but consoles are ALWAYS sold at a loss, and changes in component prices have never been reflected in console pricing before.

And Sony have already moved to a new SKU that's cheaper to produce.

I suspect that Sony have increased prices to cover the unexpected cost of upgrading PS+ to be a real Game Pass competitor, especially after MS started buying up publishers.

        • Not always with capital letters, typically Nintendo don't sell hardware at a loss and historically as the number of units sold increase along with component costs going down even Microsoft and Sony can make a tiny profit on hardware as time goes on.

This time, component costs have gone up dramatically. So Nintendo released the same old console with a different screen but charged more without reducing prices of their other consoles, Sony increased their prices of the PS5, while Microsoft has enough money to ride out component cost increases.

      • coincidentally sony just quietly started putting out a cheaper (to manufacture) revision of the ps5

        • Yeah I saw that. Microsoft really must be okay with taking loses or perhaps Game Pass is that big of a win for them.

Wait these things are still not meeting demand? Really? There's already been talks of refreshes and gpu market crashed already. I haven't touched my xbox in months.

Ive buipt PC's for gaming for years, had xboxs and playstations (360, ps4 etc). Loving the series x myself. Quick resume has change the way i game more than anything. Can be lazy now on the lounge and get 60fps, could be happier. Will pick up and Ps5 in a few yrs when prices and availability become normal.

I doubt there will be a refresh, they havent fleshed this out yet. Beside game pass is thier model, so long as ppl are subscribed they wont shift things before they need to.

        • +1

Agree on all points, just for gaming the convenience of a console can't be beat. Microsoft make awesome consoles and the series X is the finest yet. I would never be without a PC though.

          • @Spendmore: I lost my custom build in a flood…😭

            • @Goremans: I'm sorry to hear that, I suppose it's hard to get insurance to fully replace it all as well unless you keep receipts or had itemised it.
At least you will get the latest gear in your next one I suppose.

            • @Goremans: You could say, it's now fully water-cooled…

Ps5 is selling out but xbox got plenty available. Is ps5 more in demand than this despite the price increase?

    • +4

PS has always been more popular console vs Xbox.

You can virtually play all Xbox games on PC. Whilst PS has plenty of exclusives.

      • -5

Do you have any actual statistics to back the the first part of your statement - that PAS has always been more popular than Xbox? Figures suggest that Xbox outsold PS during the 360/PS3 era.

        • Walk into your Local jb or eb and look at the shelving difference between the two. That will tell you what’s more popular.

          • @nomoneynoproblems: I think you'll find what you've just answered is not at all what the question asked.

I'm yet to see a Series X console on shelves however. There is no doubt the PS5 is more popular in saying that.

            • @MBix: It was a rhetorical response. Ps has always been more popular. I haven’t ever seen a series x or ps5 on the shelves either and we probably won’t for another 12 months.

          • @nomoneynoproblems: Does it matter which is more popular at the end of the day? I was in jb earlier and it seems to me the Nintendo switch is more popular then PlayStation and xbox. Lots of family friendly games

          • @nomoneynoproblems: Mmm…. hold on sport. Low supply doesnt equal demand.

        • +5

Xbox 360 outsold PS3 early in the generation, but PS overtook it by the end.

“The PS3 has sold 87.4 million units and the Xbox 360 has sold 84 million units.”

          • @Morien: I think at the moment the figures are something like 17moillion to 22 million to PS5, the shortage of PS5 on the shelves is not due just to popularity it's because MS are way better at working the supply chain than Sony.

            • +1

@Spendmore: Probably. Just answering Mr Evil Genius, as I too, thought 360 beat out PS3.

              • @Morien: Sorry I meant to reply to no
                moneyproblems😁

        • +3

Up to date and correct figures don't show XBox outsold PS during the 360 / PS3 era, as the PS3 at the end of its life dramatically increased its sales over the XBox.

      • +5

As consumers, does it really matter which plastic box is more popular? Why should it matter if some stranger owns the same /different box than you?

        • Exactly, if you can afford it, buy both. They both offer good things. Save up, or ask mummy or daddy to buy them.

    • +3

PS5 supply chain issues have been greater than Xbox supply chain issues so it's hard to gauge actual demand

  • -7

PS is at least unique and has its own games. xbots are a downgrade version of PC

    • +5

A series x is much better value than a gaming PC though

        • +15

Is better than a PC that cost $750 though.

        • +6

Like spendmore said, good luck getting a PC for $750 that performs close

          • +1

@buckster: Plus tv which is at least 1k.

            • +1

@baldur: 99.9% of people will already have a tv.

Don't forget to add speakers/monitors/headphones etc to your PC cost comparison

        • +4

Nonsense. I've just built an AMD CPU 5900x (12 core) with 16gb ram, 4gb SSD (half pcie4/ half pcie3) and an RTX 2080S, but the xbox is juse "easier" to play on, and can pull 120 FPS on a fast screen.

point is that's a $600 CPU, $500 of SSD, $200 of ram, $1200 of GPU, $180 Case, $170 power supply, $150 in case fans and cooling loop, and $150 decent controller of any kind, be it console or mouse controller. PC (superior , admittedly) cost for all that $3150 . Despite this, most of my gaming is on the xbox.

People underestimate what a powerhouse of hardware the series x (and the PS5) are for that matter. If you've ever got into overclocking, you push the performance and to hell with $$, and efficiency. These kind of go the other way, but the power you're getting for the money really is amazing.

The only difference between the two is sony have their own proprietary linux based OS, and Micsosoft gut windows and hyper-V . I know which I rate as a software powerhouse, and which is an "entertainment company", but fact is they both have strengths.

If you want to play "with friends", console is the simplest solution and you're really not missing much.

          • @DisasterArea: please tell me you didn't pay $1200 for a 2080 Super…

            • @Zorlin: It was a carry over from ~2 years ago, but even so - today they're still up at that price, albeit a 3070 can beat it at ~$900 now.

              • @DisasterArea: selling for $1200? No way. 3080 for $1200 on the used market easily.

        • *value is relative. But mostly just cost in dollars. In this, Xbox wins. Pretty sure someone on YT did this test fps vs cost cosole vs pc.

This is coming from someone who loves building gaming PC's!

      • +5

Spec wise, it's technically true. A series X is basically a 1.2k pc today.

However, the consoles have 2 problems in virtue of being a console. Older games often have frame rate and resolution lock, and fsr have closed the gap for alot of lower end gpus to output similar fidelity. So that 450 bucks technical gap becomes alot smaller alot of the time. Like, who gives a shit what gpu is in your device when red dead 2 only runs at 30fps?

And despite Microsoft's great efforts to update many games for newer hardware, and the inclusion of quick resume is life style changing, the cons of console gaming is still long AF. Even something as simple as keybind changing can be absent in console games.

Edit: cause my prices were wrong

        • +4

Agreed, there are disadvantages in consoles, but when raw performance isn't the goal I'd say they offer more pros than cons

          • @buckster: And what are those pros? Physical copy and quick resume?

            • +3

@Wonderfool: Yeah those are two pro's.
Another is game optimisation, it's easy to optimise on one platform, with PC you have different GPU types, different processors, ram etc…they just broadly cover everything with PC but can optimise for the Xbox because it is a standard set of components.
End result is more efficient performance out of the hardware.

              • @Spendmore: Yes, I agree with optimisation. Problem is, there aren't many new games this gen. So all the other games? Better on my gtx 1060. And now that I got a 6600, there's been little reason to use my xbox, as it pushes similar or higher frame rate on 1440p screens.

                • +2

@Wonderfool: Yeah I agree with you there aren't many "next gen" games at the moment.
Im a PC gamer and also have a Nintendo for the record.
Tempted to get a PS5 but loathe the idea of supporting a greedy company like Sony….I'll probably give in and get one Lol

                  • +1

@Spendmore: Yeah, I getcha. I purchased consoles purely due to fomo as well. I have a group who only plays on the PS unfortunately, so I've purchased every Gen even though I'm a pc and Nintendo gamer predominantly.

                • +1

@Wonderfool: The GPU in the Xbox has almost double the number of CUs than the 6600.

I will never understand the constant underestimation of the performance of the current generation of consoles.

                  • @tp0: I know that. But you're running those things in 4k as that's how Xbox games are optimised. Just look at Elden ring, it can't keep constant 60.

6600 is weaker, but with no expectation to hit 4k, you can easily run things at higher fps on that thing.

            • +5

@Wonderfool: have you ever actually owned a console? it is just much more convenient. i've had both gaming PCs and consoles all my life and some games only work on PC but generally speaking, console gaming is just a smoother experience.

but if you insist on an example, turning a game on and not having to f*** around with settings for 30 min to optimise my framerate is just so nice.

              • -2

@[Deactivated]: You know, geforce experience and amd adrenaline exist. They basically automatically do all the settings for you nowadays.

Graphic settings matters only for trying to push higher fps than 60, or you're using integrated graphics.

                • +2

@Wonderfool: "why dont you just install several third party programs to get around what a console does automatically? can't you see how convenient that is? why would anyone use a console? all it has is quick resume?"

and fyi i've been playing elden ring on my PS5 for a few hundred hours and can't remember any obvious framerate dips. i just downloaded the game, and it worked.

but i guess i should have bought it for my PC instead, right?

                  https://www.techradar.com/news/elden-rings-messy-pc-launch-b…

Graphic settings matters only for trying to push higher fps than 60

funny, i have PS5 games that play at 120 frames on my TV and i just ticked a single box.

                  • -1

@[Deactivated]: I mean, just cause you're not sensitive to fps dips, doesn't mean it isn't. https://youtu.be/uVcfiBnX1c0

And calling it third party tells me that you, on the other hand, haven't touched pc gaming for a long while. It's part of the driver nowadays. And while, yes, that is indeed more step than buying a xbox and play, it's just an one time set up. That's it. It's done. You don't have to think about it.

The whole "oh pc settings is so annoying" is a thing of the past. Amd adrenaline works on devices like the aya neo next and steam deck, these softwares have matured very well nowadays.

Settings are an option, not a barrier. Can elden ring run 120hz? We can, cause we have the option to.

  • Any good game on it?

  • +2

Just a bargain piece of hardware at the asking price in any case.

    • Yeah it's a bargain and this deal is slightly lower than asking price actually.

  • +2

Great deal including shipping, ESPECIALLY in comparison with Sony's new PS5 price, and given the XSX performance is a little better (on average, results may vary with some Japanese titles).
I've had both since launch and the XSX is a much better overall package in my opinion, I've certainly used it a lot more for multi-platform titles! Quick Resume is the most next gen feature of either console, and is a real game changer (literally).

  • I'll be sure to pick one up………….

  • +1

Something to be aware of incase on the fence on brand, Xbox uses 15 times more electricity than ps5 while in standby mode….

    https://metro.co.uk/2022/09/05/xbox-series-x-wastes-15-times…

  • the same console vs console vs PC debates whenever this deals get posted. "yaawwwnn"
Who cares what media you prefer. Isn't the whole point of gaming is to switch off, maybe have fun?
I'm in the lucky camp that I have a fairly powerful gaming PC mated to 2x 27" 1440P 144hz monitors, a Switch, PS5 and SX connected to my LG CX in the living room. I can honestly say, I haven't gamed on the PC in over 3 months because it's just nicer and quicker to sit on the lounge and play on either of the consoles. And Switch has probably gotten more airtime than any of the devices this year.
They all have their use cases, the whole X vs X arguments gets boring.

Whichever you prefer, go play and have fun. That's the whole point of it.

  • Is it worth the upgrade from an Xbox One if I mainly use cloud gaming most of the time? I rarely download games and have become a fan of streaming games with Game Pass as no wait
