M4 West Sydney Speed Limit Signs

Not sure where to ask apart from RMS or RTA or DMR or whoever / whatever they're called these days…

I know they've been there a good while but I what's the deal with the number of overhead electronic speed signs between Penrith and Wentworthville? At any point you can generally see one set, sometimes two, a few times today I noticed three, and each set contains at least 3 signs. Contrast to most other motorways with a single sign on the side if the road every 5km or so. Which sign and / or metal fab company got this contract?

Its designed so that the speed can be adjusted depending on the circumstances, i.e. break down, accident. Lane closures are also done using these signs.

They have them in Melbourne also.

My car recognises the standard speed signs and complains if I'm too fast. It's a bit of a PITA especially when it also recognises the conditional school speed zone signs when it's not school time. I wonder if it would recognise the signs you are talking about.?

  • They’re built for an adaptive system and often change for small sections. It’s to smooth traffic flow. Not sure who got the contract but they did what they were supposed to do.
