Old 4K TV Won't Play 4K Files?

Picked up a Soniq S65UV16A-AU and from what I understand its capable of UHD 2160p. I'm getting "unsupported file" with various H.264 @ 2160p video samples via USB. I can only get 1080p to play. I think the TV is from 2016 so old but I'm at a loss to know why if advertised as UHD?

It won't like the container the file is in, not many TV's have good functionality in that way

Get a Chromecast with Google TV, or similar media player, and let it handle the playback

The TV is UHD, and will play 4K signals, it just doesn't know that file

    • Hmmm cheers. I don't have a Chromecast and wanted to avoid the extra expense if possible. I did change the container from MKV to MP4 thinking that was the issue but it is definitely the resolution.

The file quality isn't the issue, the file format is, capeesh?

You would hope it wasn’t just rename of file extension

    As spackbace said.
It'll play files - provided the inbuilt media player doesn't have to handle them. Soniq is a budget brand with 4k on them a bit of a stretch as far as quality is concerned.

As for playing 4k you'd be better off with a chromecast/android tv/hdmi input from a multimedia centre to stream files from a PC. It's largely down to the inbuilt decoder not being up to the task.

  • Yeah thanks guys will look at hooking up a laptop until I get me a shiny new Chromecast.

  • Just an idea. If the files are over 4GB you will have to reformat the USB to a different (non-standard on windows) file system. Google something like "4GB file USB format" to get the recommended format. Good luck.

  • If you think it is the resolution, there are several free software apps that allow you to covert from high to low resolution. That might work.

  • Download Handbrake and convert the files that do not work into other containers and settings until you figure out which settings work and then you can use the settings to convert the other files that do not work.

What does the manual say? Never mind, it's Soniq :/

Will be a format issue, just got to work out what format it likes!

Guessing it doesn't like your H.264 file because it is not exactly 3840 x 2160 in resolution (betting it's 16:9 and something like 3840 x 1680 or something) :/

Could also be that it's expecting 4k files in H.265 format at exactly 3840 x 2160 resolution …

  • Have been playing around with different containers using format factory but I haven't found anything that works at 2160p resolution, the resolution is exactly 3840 x 2160. I also tried H.265 but no love. Anything over 1080p is a no go.

I could just watch 1080p content but want to take full advantage and watch 4K if possible.

Have tested out the HDMI with my (11th Gen Intel) laptop using VLC and there is noticeable stuttering in certain scenes which can't be seen on the laptop screen. The stuttering is also occurring with 1080p content. Shows itself in slightly faster scenes, not race car fast, just normal panning of camera. The interesting part is this does not happen when playing the exact same file via USB on the TV.

I mean it's an old, cheap TV and no one knows exactly what you're using (which hdmi cord type etc)

So a) I don't know what you were expecting from an old, cheap 4K TV like this and b) what can we possibly do about your issues, which may be due to part a.

Very similar issues with Samsung curved 4k TV (NOT very smart), but very expensive!
Easiest solution found was to buy (around $60) Firestick TV 4k max.
Now I can play just about any movie, and it has builtin wifi connecting to the TV via HDMI input.

    • Sounds like the go, where is the cheapest place to buy it? $99 on Amazon.

Wait for the next sale if you're not in a hurry.

      • Recent sale at JB was 2 for $65

4K means it can display 4K, not playing all 4k files. You need a player for those new 4k format files. something like Apple TV, chromecast with google tv, amazon firestick 4k max, nvidea shield, xbox, or just connect it to a computer.

Doesn't have the codecs to play that specific coding of the movie
