Cheap Esim Plan to Keep Mobile Number after Moving Overseas

Hey all,

I am moving overseas at the end of the year but would like to keep my mobile number to at least receive texts and calls.

Ideally I want something that has eSim compatibility so I can keep the sim card slot free for another sim card. However I am having a hard time finding cheap deals as most are non eSim plans.

Does anyone have any ideas on what the best solution for me is?

Cheers!

  • Aldi has eSIM and the starter pack is valid for a year and is $5/-
Not sure if it has roaming though to receive SMS

I don’t think Aldi support eSIM yet.

Another option for the OP would be Vodafone prepaid $40 per year.

      • Yup can confirm Aldi doesn't do eSim yet, was looking into it last night

        • My bad. Sorry!

    amaysim

    • +1 Amaysim has eSim now, and you can keep the number active via PAYG, so any incoming SMS on roaming would be free. Not sure of incoming call charges on roaming, but you can check their plans for that.

      • Thanks! I'll look into this

        • Just think what you'll have to do if you don't have SIM card and have to use phone that does not have eSIM capability.

      • Hi ozprash,

Where can I find the information regarding incoming SMS on roaming to be free? I can't find anything on that topic on the Amaysim website.

        • They are, I'm using amaysim SIM overseas right now.

        • Here's the link - https://www.amaysim.com.au/plans/mobile-plans/international/…
I tried with a sample set of countries and it shows
          Calls
          Make $1.00/min
          Receive $1.00/min

          Voicemail
          Check $1.00/min
          Receive $1.00/min

          SMS
          Send 50c/each
          Receive Free

          MMS
          Send $1.30/each
          Receive $1.30/each

          Data roaming (charged per 10KB)
          0.5c/10KB (50c/MB)

  • I’m using Optus overseas right now. Even managed to do the sim swap to esim while overseas (though required a phone call to Aus).
Apparently you can use Optus’s $2 day plan to keep the number active so basically just pay $2 once every 6 months and it stays active

    • Can you still receive texts? If so do they charge you for it?

      • Yes you can receive texts. No charge

    • Curious, when overseas, does WiFi-Calling calling work without paying roaming rates?
Can you send and receive SMS/Calls?

      • +1

I was billed roaming rates for the only SMS I’ve sent so far. I won’t be able to tell for wifi only usage for another month as I have a bunch of roaming credit on my account that will need to zero out before I can attempt to call without credit to test

Optus and Voda VoWifi don't work outside Aus, only Telstra/Boost.

  • -1

Woolworths does eSIM (just moved to it) and seems to be the only Telstra MNVO that does.

They do 180 days for $60 (normally $65) and 365 days for $140 (normally $150) making it pretty affordable to retain the number,
though not as cheap as some other prepaid options.

    • Does it has active international roaming to receive text messages whilst overseas?
      Actually I need both options
      - International roaming for receiving text messages for banking
      - Oz remote suitability (telstra connection when I am in oz) fifo worker.

  • Optus Flex - 2$ a year - roaming activated - can receive sms overseas.

    • If you cancel your AutoRecharge subscription, you will be required to
re-establish within 186 days from your credit expiry, otherwise your
service will be disconnected from the Optus Network and you will lose
      your mobile service number

      • Hence why you recharge $1 before the 186 days ends. Works well - been using it since Optus Flex has been released.

        • Hi, sounds ground, so does it mean I can use 2$ to keep my mobile number and receving SMS?

Do you have a link to purchase?

          • @paulatsydney: On optus.com
Optus flex - 1$ every 6 months to keep the number alive.
