Replacement Gaming Controller Options

Hi just hoping if anyone had any extra recommendations

I've been using Xbox elite controller series 2 for some years now, didn't really use it in the early years but the last 6 months been using it a fair bit more. the right shoulder button is now having issues, its needing a bit more force to register an input compared to the left which is making it an issue of "life and death" in certain games. I am somewhat disappointed that an "Elite" controller still seems to fail so easily (also fyi I've never raged to the point of throwing the controller around to shorten its lifespan either), though I suppose if I had used it more regularly from the start perhaps the fault may have been identified within the warranty period.

I am wondering if anyone would recommend any comparable alternatives , otherwise I saw there is an upcoming Elite series 2 core controller coming out later this month, means I don't have to fork out full price on a whole new series 2 controller and I can still reuse the case and accessories

I have an Xbox series X, but the controller has mainly been used on my PC with a wireless adapter, when I travel I do link it via bluetooth to the laptop as well. I also have a 8bitdo adapter to link it to other things like nintendo switch.

so what I need:
- wireless function
- has options to link to more than 1 kind of gaming device
- vibration is probably optional

I don't mind if its xbox or playstation button configuration

Have you looked into the 8BitDo Range?

8BitDo has also done official collaboration with Microsoft/Xbox

    • yes also in consideration, I guess I'm sorta hoping for some first hand experience/reviews as the product information doesn't often tell the whole picture. I haven't looked into Razer offerings as I've heard from a lot of other people who have reported that Razer products have been notorious for failing soon after their warranty periods.

I've been using the 8BitDo Pro 2 on Android, Switch & PC for months and it has been great.

Don't have a Xbox, so can't comment on the support/compatibility.

      • 8BitDo are quality. I've only used their retro range, but they are well regarded overall.

  • what's wrong with the new xbox and dualsense? if there's a problem, it's more likely to be easily fixed/replaced since more people have them?

yea I'm sure they are good options, I'm just trying to see what other options might be out there

If you're going to replace it - have you looked into trying to fix it?

    • I looked into some of the guides and tried the fixes, it didn't help the problem, if I wanted to push it further it would involve some soldering work which I don't think I am skilled enough to do

      • I mean another thing might be, is it just full of gunk and so not registering properly? A good clean might work

        • yea I had a look inside already, that's not the problem

  • These days the genuine controller for your desired console is usually the best one to get… best compatibility, best support, etc.

8bitdo is the third party option that seems to get a bit more support (i've never used with an xbox though… never owned an xbox, just going by what others say).

  • I've got way too many controllers. M$ QA sucks. My elite 2 had issues with registering button presses on the B and Y buttons so I put some tape on the edge so it would work better.

I've got the 8bitdo pro2 and some games just aren't the same. Playing halo feels wrong with it. Fine with Hades though and emulation. That said, the build quality is exceptional and removable batteries!

In the past week 8bitdo announced their ultimate range which is worth looking at.

That's good to hear that 8bitdo controllers do well with emulation… I have two of them that I couldn't resist when Kogan had them down to $35 each that I plan to use with the nvidia shield and retroarch. I should probably dig out a small form factor USB and dump some roms onto it, and sync up the bluetooth controllers.

It's mainly been with cemu and yuzu (there's a separate program that does motion control) and I had used the pro plus on my phone and tablet with snes 9x. The button and dpad feels like it's OEM and genuine. Works well with some android games like stardew. If you get the phone clip make sure to get the new version which folds a couple times as it is much better balanced.

  • Have you try to fix it first?
    Something like this

but I will use contact cleaner instead of IPA.

    • trigger buttons were fine, shoulder was the problem

      • But I will still give contact cleaner a go.
