Chair Mats & Chairs

I've only got about $200 to spare right now. I need a hard chair mat (plastic, most likely) to go on carpet and a chair that'll withstand me putting my legs up on the desk and leaning back. I'm in Perth.

Suggestions?

The amazing story behind why I need one, you'll be sorry wasted your time reading it:

I've been putting off getting a proper hard chair mat for a while and instead using a spare piece of carpet as a mat. The carpet below the mat isn't as bad as it would have been, but it's still worse for wear.

I've also been using an el cheapo Big W roller chair and it finally gave way to my tendency to lean back and put my legs up… it isn't a leaning-back chair and the arm-seat-back brace at the side snapped (frankly I'm impressed it lasted as long as it did, I put a lot of pressure in directions the chair wasn't designed to handle).

  • Ikea have plastic chair mats for $40 which do the job for me

As for a chair you want to be able to kick back on, might be tricky to find a new one of decent quality within your budget. Might be worth checking out Grays/Gumtree/eBay to see if there's any second hand heavy duty office chairs? I picked up my current office chair at an office refurb/relocation sale, not real stylish but very sturdy.

    • Thanks. I looked them up on Bunnings' website and they were $55 but when I went in there today they were $32.50 at the shelf but rang up as only $29.90 at the checkout so I went with that.

$170 left for the chair. Nothing good on Gumtree, eBay or Grays :( Nothing that tilts.

  • i have an office chair, rarely used… if u keen, send me a message n i'll send u a pic

  • After earth2 not PM or emailing me back, I went and checked the various Officeworks ones. The Roma High Back for ~$85 was equally high in the comfort stakes as the more expensive options and fulfils my tilt requirement. Unless someone has a reason it's worse than it feels or a better alternative, I'll probably pick one up this arvo.

    • Apparently the entire state is out of stock of them.

Annoyingly, they all have display models, just no stock.

      • So they won't sell you the display model? While you were there you could have picked up a chair mat for $6 or $7 on clearance, as long as you don't mind it having jelly beans on it.

        • They would not sell me the display model "because it isn't discontinued". He didn't know when, but presumed they'd be getting more stock in so they keep the display models.

  • Have you checked http://www.milandirect.com.au/ ? I think they have a pretty good quality chairs

    • I'd prefer to get something I can try out first.

It's funny, my broken chair is actually slightly more comfortable now it's broken. I can lean back further :P It's astounding I haven't broken the other side.

  • Does anyone know what types of chair cushioning don't flatten quickly?
