what will they substitute with? bugs & crickets?

No they're the bread crumb substitutes.

    • The kebab shops are putting baby spinach in instead of lettuce. Surely that’s a crime too.

    • Cabbage is now double the cost of iceberg lettuce, what is up with that.

      • cabbages are $12 each atm….

    • Just like any big corporations in Australia , if they can replace lettuce with rubber and got away with it, they
Will never go back to real lettuce. It’s all about ripping off customers to the max .

I used to work on a farm in north west Tassie where we cut the vegetables and they were on the boss’ Ute down to the shop for sale within minutes of harvest. He used to tell a story when he was having a fight with the Coles and Woolies in town about lettuce prices and on that particular day between the three of them they kept price beating each other down to 10 cents a lettuce. He said he was preparing to go lower by getting the workers to cut more lettuces in case he needed to give them away. That was probably 20 years ago and we obviously still love our lettuce.

    • I don't understand how such a fight like that would unfold

    • If the lettuce sizes are still like they were before you needed a whole lettuce just to make a salad. Even Coles were selling two packs.

  • Just waiting for the farmers who have been gouging the last 3-6 months to start to whinge and complain - probably ask for government assistance and support

Just waiting for the farmers who have been gouging the last 3-6 months

I understand you've probably never visited a farm in your life but lettuce is affected by the weather and soil. If it is too cold, windy, rainy etc farmers will have a reduced or no harvest. This creates scarcity (high demand, low supply). The farmers are contracted to places like Coles and Woolies who buy it for the agreed price in contract (which btw is a pittance). Coles and Woolies then deliver it to their stores and price it according to demand and supply. Supermarkets make sure they're still getting the same profits by putting prices up otherwise if revenue/profits go down their share price goes down.

I feel like someone can't be this stupid intentionally and I was just baited into giving a reply.

      • My understanding is a number of farmers were affected by flooding which was cutting supply.

My other half was a farmers son, wheat/sheep, in the Wimmera and a lot of time you live from the Bank. You have to borrow to get the crop into the ground and hope there is harvest to pay back plus enough money to keep going. If the weather is crap you can be in a lot of trouble.

        There is a joke.
The farmer wins the lottery and the guy presenting the cheque asks him what he’s going to do with the money. He replies, keep farming until it is all gone.

        • +1

Yeah it's definitely not my idea of the good life, but full respect to anyone who does it. The amount of adverse weather conditions we've faced this year is insane.

Contrary to the original comment, I hope the government does give assistance to farmers because a lot of them lately have just been burying money and getting very little back.

  • ACT $1.70 @ Coles

    $1.69 at Aldi.

  • Lettuce price aside, asian vegies are still expensive

    • Best stick with boring white guy vegies then.

      • -1

ahem…triggered & offended white guy here. our vegies are not boring and its discriminatory of you to imply that.

        • our vegies are not boring

Agreed, the problem is the lack of seasoning

    This or bitcoin? /end sarcasm

    • +2

Funnily enough the value on both seems to fluctuate so I wouldnt trust either. At least the potential financial loss on lettuce is much less and you can eat it to get your moneys worth.

  • Is it a deal? Coles also $1.7
Other vegetable prices keep dropo. Egg tomato, broccoli

    • It’s around this price pretty much everywhere now, so no deal.

  • +2

Good luck if you can find them. Went to Woolies on Thursday and they were all gone. Got another variety of lettuce instead.

    • was lucky to get one of three left 9:30am friday…lol

  • Lettuce all eat lettuce now that it's affordable again!

    Does OW price match?

  • Now, to learn the art of McDonaldfying. Than I can keep my icebergs for future generation to come despite whatever the conditions or sell it at a high!

  • I went to a club last night. I couldn't eat the crumb cutlets, Schnitzel, or chips as for some irrational reason, they cook it in the same deep fryers as seafood? So I asked for a steak with lettuce only, and there were was i tomato sliced up, sliced Onion with 3 small frilly bits of lettuce??

Not to mention a lot of clubs and butchers are using Tip Top Crumbs which contain Fish oil, and some panko crumbs contain seaweed.

    • Also, the homebrand bread crumbs and another couple of well known brands now contain Fish Oil. ?????
