Malaysia Airlines Flight Cancellation Back in Dec 2021. Still Awaiting Refund from Flight Center

Hello Guys,

Hope you're all well.

My return flight was cancelled back in DEC 2021 by Malaysia Airlines. I spoke with the my travel agent from Flight Center at that time and she advised that it will take around 12 weeks to get this refund back from Malaysia Airlines.

After following up multiple times with them, she finally told that I will be only only receiving $99 refund as per the Malaysia Airlines policy.
How should I proceed on this as the ticked was for over $1200 from Flight Center.

Note: Flight Center agent had advised that I'll be receiving the refund as the ticked is refundable at the time of booking. But, back in March 2022, I had directly spoken to Malysia Airlines and they had suggested that I will NOT be getting any refund as the ticket is non-refundable.

Can anyone please advise me of my options here?

chargeback and move on. malaysia airlines will try to bs you with malaysian laws but just state you're from australia (bonus if you mention you're an ozbargainer).

Its way too late to do a chargeback, they strung you along and you fell for their bs.

    • yikes just saw this. 12 weeks to get a refund? it should take less than 12 days.

I heard on the grapevine they delay refunds in case you chargeback as well.

It's not too late for a charge back (despite even what the charge back conditions may state). I got one from bankwest on accommodation that was 2 years old. The accommodation granted me a 1 yr extension on me moving my dates due to covid but by the time the one yr was up, and we still couldnt access bali the hotel went quiet and stopped replying to my email. Took a lot of paperwork but after talking to bankwest they said i might have a case. Took around 7 weeks but i was very surprised to get the money back.

If malaysia airlines cancelled you are entitled to a refund and you have perfect grounds for a charge back as you were not given the service/product you paid for.

  • did your actual booking/itinerary that you received from Flight Centre at the time showed it was a refundable fare and any cancellation fees? Can't just take the travel agent's word tbh…

i think it was cancelled by malaysia airlines

      • You think? So what is the real story?

I’ll be sure to update you once I have the full story.

Bought through Flight Centre, hound Flight Centre for the refund. They will need to deal with MH. That's why you book with an agent as they're the agent to act on your behalf.

  • Here's some trivia: I lived in a small city when I was younger and my mother was in the TV ad for the city's only Flight Centre, she played "woman seen walking into the Flight Centre while the cheery guy talks at the end of the ad", I should check if anyone has made an imdb page for her yet.

OP, demand the refund from AustriaBargain's mother!

Is refundability of the fare an issue here?

    MAS cancelled the flight.

They are right (profanity) if they do not offer a refund, unless that is their business model to sell flights, cancel and keep the money.

unless that is their business model to sell flights, cancel and keep the money.

ooo looks like qantas has competition

  • So basically MAS is saying whether or not they provided the service you paid for is irrelevant, once you pay them your ticket is non-refundable. The downfall of this airline is coming I think.

They have already had a couple of downfalls….

Initiate chargeback against flight centre..might motivate them to resolve the issue.

Who cancelled the flight? The airline or you? Your post does not make it 100% clear.

If it's the airline then how can they possibly refuse a refund?

If you cancelled the flight, then it's down to the T's and C's that apply to the ticket you purchased. If it's a discounted economy ticket then it may well be that it was non refundable.

My return flight was cancelled back in DEC 2021 by Malaysia Airlines.

Malaysia Airlines playing silly buggers being an international company.
Even then Flight centre (as your agent) should have refunded you as they're an Australian enterprise.

      • I read “by” too but the rest of the post sounded more like a scenario where it was the OP who cancelled. Hence the doubt and hence my question.

  • Hi All,
    Update:
Thanks for all your suggestions. I had applied for the chargeback with Mastercard via CommBank.

They came back saying its too late for the chargeback ( should have reported them within 90 days).

But Commbank has offered me a full refund of this based on my relationship with them. Big THANKS to them.

    Shame on FlightCenter/Malysia Airlines though.
