How to Poison a Tree Stump?

We have a tree (about 12cm diameter) that snuck in between the narrow space between the shed and the side fence. That space is only about 20cm wide, so difficult to access.

If I manage to find a way to cut the tree down to stump (maybe can reach it with a reciprocal saw), is there any way to poison the tree stump, so that it will die with time and not grow back?

Many thanks

    Drill holes into stump.

    Pour diesel into new holes.

    Wait.

I've successfully done this but with neat Glyphosate (Round-Up (TM) )

      • same…on quite large trunks too…eg fig, date palm etc

Worked well on my neighbours tree.

you forgot the bit to light the fuel, no need to wait then!

      • diesel? lol

        • Never burnt a stump out before then I see :)

          • @JimmyF: nah no real need….so far :P

why diesel and how to ignite it?

              @franco cozzo:

              why diesel

Because that is what the comment above was using ;)

              how to ignite it?

Do you somehow think diesel doesn't burn when a flame is put to it?

              • @JimmyF: honestly didnt know ….i knew it wasnt anywhere as flammable as petrol.
seems like it has a much higher ignition point so needs a lot more flame / spark to get it going…is that right?

That is correct, but still works well for starting fires if you want to.

Infact, I find it is nicer to use for starting a fire, as unlike petrol that has lots of fumes and goes up in a big flash taking your eyebrows and arm hair with it, diesel doesn't do that.

I would insert a couple of dynamite sticks into the drill holes and set off the fuse. No more atump, just a big hole you can either fill or convert to a swimming pool later.

          Now you're talking!

I bought this but have yet to use it.

Bunnings has a similar product with same active ingredient, Triclopyr, but above has a higher concentration and lower price.

Poison it before you cut it down. Most herbicides are absorbed through the leaves so they don't work as effectively when applied to a stump. If you must cut it down first, apply the poison immediately to the cut stump so that it has a chance to be absorbed into the vascular system of the plant.

If it's a gum tree spraying it is unlikely to kill it.

You'd need to drill holes and pour neat Glyphosate in them holes.

      • There is/was a product called stumpout'? and it's main ingredient - 95%+ is Sodium Metabisulphate, available from your LHBS.Same (if they haven't gone bust). deal drill a hole and pour a dissolved solution of the above (mixed with water), and wait a few months for it to rot.

        There is also Potassium Nitrate

When the council removes trees in my area, their standard process seems to be:
1 Cut tree close to ground level
2 Immediately paint stump with roundup
3 Return x weeks later and grind the stump below ground level
Since you don't have access to remove the stump, just let it slowly decay

Cut tree, throw a black sheet of plastic over stump ;)

    No sun, no tree :P

Why is this getting downvoted? It seems like a reasonable suggestion to me.

New shoots will just poke through the sheet. Depending on the tree but a lot of them are very robust.

        • +1

Nah, they don't - need sunlight to grow to poke through …

But you know, some people think they know everything without trying it and there can't possibly be multiple solutions :P

Best to use a poison that will give you cancer from handling incorrectly - much better upvoted solution ;)

          • @7ekn00: I used poison and black plastic to control bamboo.
I'm sure I would be still spraying new shoots if I hadn't used the plastic.
I covered the plastic sheet with mulch.

I asked an arborist once. He said he drains bit of two stroke oil from a chainsaw onto stumps.

  • Thanks everyone for the suggestions.
