Source of Water Damage Stains on Ceiling

From the water damage stains on the downstairs family room ceiling marked in red, would the most likely cause be the deterioration of the water proofing in the upstairs ensuite shower?

Have you experienced this before and how did you find the cause and then rectify the problem?

Update:
Uploaded pic of water damage and renamed the first file to plans.

    Yes

Remove a section of damaged plaster and look for source of water.

how did you find the cause and then rectify the problem?

It was a broken roof tile and I replaced it.

So a broken tile on the roof is leaking, down past the 1st story, around the bathroom and onto the ceiling of the ground floor? Hmmm interesting theory.

No, that part of the house was only single story.

  • I got this on first floor celing (garage). funny as on top of it is a bedroom which has no leaks whatsoever.

And very little water dripping from that stain, only during heavy hail rain.

You're doing it wrong - you need to link photos of your house floor plans for an assessment as to whether it is water damage ;)

      • i dont have it. well saw water drip so must be water. but we dont know from where

    • Blocked gutter/downpipe flowing through the wall cavity ???

      • hmmm could be. a plumber had a look quickly weeks ago he couldnt find out why/what, but to be fair he just look from inside the garage not climbing up

so need to call plumber urgently as the water may/is trapped inside and maybe causing more damage/spread?

        • I'd check the gutters quickly first to rule that out…

Your shower is leaking. Waterproofing has failed.

There are only two types of showers in this world, ones that leak and ones that haven't leaked yet.

  • With your description there is no way anyone could determine it’s anything other than the shower. There isn’t enough information.

Assuming there is a bathroom above, it’s the likely cause. Assuming there isn’t a way for water to get there from the roof. Assuming there is no other plumbing problems. Assuming lots.

If it’s waterproofing, you are probably better off redoing the whole bathroom.

I assumed you could read the plans. The block on the right (upstairs) sits directly on the block on the left (downstairs); dimensions included.

Waterproofing failed or plumbing leak, remove gyprock and look. Do you have a plastic shower base or plastic bathtub?
Need a photo of the shower area to better diagnose.

I didn’t look at them at first, but reality is even the plans aren’t going to give you a reliable source of the water. It can collect and travel from other areas. Could be any of the pipes, could be coming in a window etc.

The photo of the roof seems to show it coming from the wall and moving across, but even that’s not definitive.

      • It doesn't look like a very fast leak. Maybe a slow drip. And it looks like it's all dried up?

Did you stop using that bathroom or shower?

Definitely create and inspection hole to confirm where the water is coming from.

If you're lucky, it's coming from a pipe or the floor waste of the shower. If you're unlucky, then it could be the waterproofing.

        • Did you stop using that bathroom or shower?

I don't live there so not sure.

Definitely create and inspection hole to confirm where the water is coming from

You mean in the ceiling of the family room?

          • @ihbh: Yes the ceiling where the stain is.

From the very limited information you've provided to us over the internet, the water damage stains on the downstairs family room ceiling marked in red would most likely be caused by water.

    • -2

most likely be caused by water.

A plumber told me that it might also be due to 'Dihydrogen monoxide' (DHMO)

  • What sort of games do you play in the games room?

And the retreat area in the master suite. Nice. 😉

Retreat: n an act of withdrawing

  • surely your bathrooms waterproofing has failed so it leaks down?
id be getting a plumber to verify and renovate ur bathroom, as likely be ripping up tiles and rewaterproofing anyway

  • Since the bathroom, and especially the shower is directly above the leak, I suspect the waterproofing membrane has failed. Time for a bathroom reno!

It doesn't need to be waterproofing, it could also be floor drain flange if shower or it could be water entering behind the tap fittings, or silicon has deteriorated around bath.

If the house is less than 7 years old the builder should cover cost of any repairs.
